Florian Cajori (1859-1930) was born in Switzerland, son of a leading civil engineer, and came to the United States in 1875, when he was sixteen. He studied at the University of Wisconsin as an undergraduate, and did graduate work there and at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, before joining the faculty of Tulane University. He had to leave New Orleans within a couple of years on developing tuberculosis, and came to Colorado Springs for his health, where he was invited by President Slocum to join the faculty of Colorado College first as a part-time instructor (at $30 per month) and within a year as professor of physics (at $1500 per year). As professor of physics from 1889-1898, Cajori ardently promoted scientific studies at the college, not least through his founding of the Colorado College Scientific Society in 1890, and is celebrated particularly for taking, with his physics class, the first X-ray photographs in the West. In 1898, he became professor of mathematics, and five years later, became also the founding Dean of the School of Engineering.

Mathesis Universalis : the Search for a Universal Science
INTRODUCTION
"The design of mathesis universalis, for short MU , was stated in the 17th century as part of the rationalistic philosophy of this time including a program of mathematization of sciences (see Weingartner, 1983). However, the significance of MU is not restricted to that period. It belongs to main ideas of Western civilization, its beginnings can be traced to Pythagoreans and Plato.
Immediate sources of the 17th century MU are found in the 15th century revival of Platonism whose leading figure was Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499), the author of "Theologia Platonica". He was accompanied by Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464), Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), also by Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543). All of them may have taken as their motto the biblic verse, willingly quoted by St. Augustine, Omnia in numero et pondere et mensura disposuisti , Sap. 11, 21. The core of their doctrine was expressed in Ficino's statement that the perfect divine order of the universe gets mirrored in human mind due to mind's mathematical insights; thus mathematics proves capable of the role of an universal key to the knowledge; hence the denomination mathesis universalis
This line of thought was continued in the 16th century by Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) and Johannes Kepler (1571-1630); it penetrated not only mechanics and astronomy but also medical sciences as represented by Teophrastus Paracelsus of Salzburg (1493-1541). No wonder that in the 17th century the community of scholars was ready to treat the idea of

Florian Cajori Cajori emigrated to the United States in 1875 when he was sixteen years old. He entered the State Normal School in Whitewater, Wisconsin in 1876 and graduated two years later. Cajori did not enter university immediately after graduating, but he taught in a country school before beginning his studies of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin. After being awarded a B.S. from Wisconsin in 1883, he entered Johns Hopkins University in January 1884. Having studied for about eighteen months at Johns Hopkins, Cajori left in June 1885 and was awarded his Master's degree by the University of Wisconsin the following year. After leaving Johns Hopkins University, Cajori was appointed as assistant professor at Tulane University in New Orleans in 1885 even before receiving his Master's degree. He became professor of applied mathematics at Tulane in 1887. He held the chair of physics at Colorado College in Colorado Springs from 1889 to 1898 and during this time, in 1890, he married Elizabeth G Edwards; they had one son. Also during this time, in 1894, he was awarded his doctorate from Tulane University. Cajori held the chair of mathematics at Colorado College from 1898 until 1918, being Dean of the Department of Engineering for the last fifteen years of his time at Colorado Springs. He was appointed to a specially created chair in the history of mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley in 1918. This was the first chair in the history of mathematics to be founded in the United States and it says much of Cajori's high reputation that a special chair was created at this leading university.

After examining the writings of Archimedes one can well understand how, in ancient times, an "Archimedean problem" came to mean a problem too deep for ordinary minds to solve, and how an "Archimedean proof" came to be the synonym for unquestionable certainty.
