(With apologies for any cross-posting)
With Peter Neumann and Julia Tompson, I am editing the collected
papers of William Burnside (the group theorist). We are interested in
any photographs of Burnside: we've got a number through the Royal
Society, London Mathematical Society, Royal Naval College, National
Protrait Gallery and Pembroke College, Cambridge (and I know of one at
the Institut Mittag-Leffler) but does anyone know of any others? We'd
be particularly interested in anything of Burnside as a young man, as
the ones we have all show him later in life.
Many thanks for any help Season's greetings, Tony Tony Mann School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences The University of Greenwich Wellington Street London UK Tel: + (44) (0)181 331 8709 Fax: + (44) (0)181 331 8665 Email: A.Mann@gre.ac.uk

David Burnside: A UUP MP
The Ulster Unionist Party's David Burnside has taken the South Antrim seat off the Democratic Unionist Party. It is a personal victory for Mr Burnside who last year lost out in a by-election to the DUP's William McCrea, following the death of the sitting MP. It was a victory which stunned the Ulster Unionist Party, as South Antrim had been a notoriously safe Ulster Unionist seat. But after the DUP holding the seat for just a few months, the Ulster Unionists have won it back with a majority of about 1,000. Afterwards, Mr Burnside said: "I voted for the agreement. I didn't vote for the treatment of the RUC. "I did not vote for the terrorists in government without decommissioning." "The reason why there has been disillusionment within the unionist community, within my own party and expressed through the Democratic Unionist Party and other unionist parties, is because decommissioning has not taken place," he said.

    Neely, C.J., dissenting:
    Double, Double toil and trouble;
    Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, MACBETH act 4, sc. 1.
Once again the majority stirs the cauldron created by Whiting v. Whiting, 183 W. Va. 451, 396 S.E.2d 413 (1990). A mere three months before the separation, Mrs. Burnside succumbed to Mr. Burnside's pressure and used part of her inheritance to pay off the mortgage on the couple's house. The family law master and the circuit court applied the Whiting gift presumption and Mr. Burnside was awarded a half-interest in the jointly titled house. Mrs. Burnside cried foul and foul it is!
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, MACBETH act 4, sc. 1.
No easy solution exists under Whiting. The majority, concerned about this woman who is "self-employed cleaning houses," added some unique items to the mix because Whiting's "coercion, duress, or deception" methods for rebutting the presumption of a gift did not work in this case. But wait, the family law master and the circuit court "failed to make a specific finding regarding Mrs. Burnside's 'intent' to make a gift." Slip op. at 15. See footnote 1 Careful on remand, because the cauldron of Whiting refuses to accept the "estate planning" or "adverse consequences" explanation. Slip op. at 16. The majority hints of an "unjust enrichment. . . at the division state of equitable distribution" (Slip op. at 18 n.15) loophole, which might be used to bring some equity to Whiting.

New form of transportation took flight locally in 1910
Well, the summer vacation season is slowly winding down. Before you know it, many will be busy booking flights for the Thanksgiving and holiday season flights to go home, or their `dream vacation` to wherever for the big `Y2K` observance. We never think much these days about times without flying as a travel option, but this area has quite a bit of history to contribute to aviation, after the Wright Brothers got the bugs out of their invention.
The first flight around Oneonta was in 1910. A `barnstormer` became quite an attraction at the 1910 Oneonta Fair, promising to provide thrills to the fairgoers. Unfortunately, the pilot took off from a farm pasture on Oneonta's south side, but crashed shortly after takeoff and never got to the fairgrounds. A year later though, another pilot, Walter Johnson, successfully gave flying exhibitions at the fair.
Oneonta boys Frank Burnside and Earl Fritts were at that demonstration, and needless to say, the flying bug bit them. By the end of 1911, the two pals had graduated from the new Thomas Brothers Flying School, in Steuben County's town of Bath. These two became one of the first in the world to become licensed to fly an aircraft.

    FROM THE PRESIDENT
In a very close race you have elected LENA M. LENCEK and DAVID F. STERMOLE to your Executive. As President, I welcome them to its ranks, and look forward to having their help in whatever recommendations and decisions we have to make. I also wish to thank the two retiring members of the Executive, MICHAEL BIGGINS and MARC GREENBERG, for their work over the last three years. Elsewhere in this Letter you will read of our panels for the AAASS 29th National Convention in Seattle, 20-23 November next. We will have a very interesting program, and I hope that a large number of members from regions other than the West Coast will be able to make the journey. I myself have wanted to visit Seattle for a long time, and am looking forward to our meeting in November, very much. Next year, 1998, is - as you have already been reminded - our Society's Twenty-Fifth Anniversary. To mark the occasion, your Executive recommends that the Society be strongly visible at BOTH the AAASS Convention (in Boca Raton, Florida, 24-27 September) and the AATSEEL Convention (in San Francisco, 28-30 December). Elsewhere in this Letter you will see some calls for papers for Boca Raton; if you are interested in participating in one of these, contact the panel organizer. If you have other plans for panels or roundtables for that con-vention, do NOT leave the organization till the last moment! The deadline for panel proposals is almost certainly going to be within about two weeks of the Seattle meeting. For San Francisco 1998 there will not be such urgencythe deadline for proposals will likely be next spring.

    William Dalrymple. 1815-1890
Born 6 Jan 1815 in Stirlinghire, Scotland, only son of James Dalrymple and Agnes Clelland. Moved to Island with parents and sister Agnes (b. 1818) in 1822 where after 1825 they leased Ballastole farm, Braddan, which they ran for many years. Managed the Mills of William Kelly at Union Mills bought by Capt Harrison in 1827 by forced coroner's sale, and expanded the business, William took over the management of these in 1843 (and bought out mills in 1860) , the same year he married Letitia Kelly of Trollaby at Morown, their only child Agnes was born in 1844. Like his father a leading member of the Congregational church, deacon at Finch Hill for over 40 years - Rev David Inglis describes William's house, Burnside, as his second home. This house was built in 1860 and though aptly named due to its close proximity to the Mill Lade, it reflects his love of the poetry of Robert Burns. Became director of IoM Bank in 1865 as well as a director of the IoMSPCo. Noted as a staunch Liberal in politics, it required the end of the Keys self-election to encourage him to engage in public affairs. Elected a M.H.K. in the first election of 1867, he held his seat until his death in 1890. Appointed in 1874 as Government Commissioner to the strife-riden New Street Board concerned with the establishment of Victoria Street.
