Ian Whittle's visit
Peterhouse overseas
It gives the College particular pleasure to reinforce contact with members living overseas, a long way from Trumpington Street. There has been a number of initiatives in the past year or so, building on visits made by the Master and Fellows to lecture or to attend conferences overseas:
  • on 27th March 1999 the Master, Sir John Meurig Thomas, met some dozen Petreans, their spouses and guests living in Los Angeles and elsewhere in California, at an informal dinner at the CalTech Athenaeum. The Master was at CalTech, in Los Angeles, to deliver the Linus Pauling Lecture; while there, he received a Prize from the American Chemical Society; on 29th November 2000 the Master met fourteen Petreans living in the Toronto area, and from elsewhere in Ontario and Quebec, while he was in Canada to lecture in the 4th John C Polanyi Nobel Laureate Lecture Series at the University of Toronto. Our picture [above] was taken at the informal buffet luncheon held for Peterhouse at Massey College at the University. A number of Petreans also attended the Master's lecture, on 'The Architecture of the Invisible', and other lectures on the general theme of 'Building with Molecules', the previous day; Dr Roderick Munday, Fellow, Steward and Wine Steward, and University Lecturer in Law, participated in the 14th International Conference of the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law in Johannesburg, South Africa, between 4th and 7th December 2000. Dr Nelson Mandela was amongst the participants. While in Johannesburg, Dr Munday took the opportunity to meet a number of Petreans.

Looking Out, Looking In: the 'Other' in the Journal of Geography in Higher Education
JANICE MONK, University of Arizona, Tucson, USA ABSTRACT
The Journal of Geography in Higher Education has a vision of being inclusive. This paper examines what the journal, throughout its history, has published on teaching and learning in relation to people and places referred to in contemporary scholarship as the 'Other'. It addresses themes of gender, race/ethnicity, sexuality, and the 'Third World', noting especially the surprising paucity of material on the latter. In particular, the article explores ways in which teaching addresses aspects of students' values and attitudes, and the importance of linking knowledge, emotion, experiential learning and action. 8. Incorporating transferable skills into an undergraduate geography assignment
Sue Burkill
The development of such personal skills can be woven into the existing teaching structure through appropriate experiential tasks. Jenkins and Pepper (1988)
Context
The importance of introducing Transferable Skills through undergraduate Geography has been emphasised over many years, and for some tutors has provided a context for student assignments (Jenkins and Pepper, 1988). The Enterprise in Higher Education Initiative (Brown and Pendlebury, 1992) recognises four broad areas of skills as important:
  • cognitive skills (handling information, evaluating evidence, thinking critically etc)
  • social skills (working with others, communicating with others)
  • managing oneself (initiative, independence, personal organisation)
  • learning to learn (knowing how you learn, deploying a range of appropriate learning strategies)
There has been a clear recognition of the need to enhance these skills at the College of St Mark and St John, where Geography is taken as a major or minor component of a BEd or BA degree. In the second year there is a core module entitled "Global Issues: Demography and Environment". This module has been used for some time as a vehicle for reinforcing a range of graphical, statistical and mapping skills as well as exploring geographical concepts and issues. In recent years an entrepreneurial approach has been adopted for assignments in this module. In one assignment students take on the role of demographic consultants to respond to a hypothetical request from the Overseas Development Administration for advice about whether particular countries in Africa should be provided with support for their future population programmes. This has involved:
