"Certain people, as soon as they hear that in this book On the Revolutions of the Spheres of the Universe I ascribe movement to the earthly globe, will cry out that, holding such views, I should at once be hissed off the stage.
"I am not so pleased with my own work that I should fail duly to weigh the judgment which others may pass thereon; and though I know that the speculations of a philosopher are far removed from the judgment of the multitude for his aim is to seek truth ... yet I hold that opinions which are quite erroneous should be avoided."

Business and patronage: the case of Montague Burton 1920-1970 Katrina Honeyman School of History University of Leeds In 1944, on the fortieth anniversary of the University of Leeds , Montague Burton was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa On that occasion, Arnold Shimmin , then acting Montague Burton professor of Industrial Relations, highlighted the intellectual rather than the business achievements of Sir Montague. His writings ‘reveal a preoccupation with the misunderstandings between men that cause industrial unrest and international strife’, he said. Such emphasis on his publications would have pleased Burton , for while his proflicacy was more usually associated with the production of men’s suits than with books and articles, he was driven by cerebral at least as much as by commercial considerations. The young Montague had wished to become an academic scholar, but was distracted from this course by the need to earn money. There is evidence that the choice made in early adulthood continued to be a source of regret. Nevertheless astonishing success in business provided Burton with the means to be connected, at least vicariously, with the academy.

Dr David Weinberg's reflections on his time as a Hartley Fellow
"A wonderful resource..." I am a professor of history and director of the Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. My present research is focused on European Jewry in the immediate post-war era, with special emphasis on the development of a distinctive European Jewish identity. In May-June 2001, I was invited to be a Hartley Fellow at the University of Southampton. While there, I had a rare opportunity to examine the marvellous Anglo-Jewish archives at the Hartley Library, around which the Parkes Institute was founded. The collection, which includes a vast array of documents from the Institute for Jewish Affairs as well as material from the Anglo-Jewish Association, proved invaluable for my research. I was also delighted to find the correspondence of a number of noted British rabbis and communal leaders of the post-war era, including J.H. Hertz, Israel Brodie, Selig Brodetsky, and Solomon Schonfeld. Dr David Weinberg

The Jewish Archives
The archive contains a wealth of material of interest to the historian of Anglo-Jewry as well as James Parkes's personal papers. In recent years, the Parkes Collections have developed as a place of deposit for archives concerning nineteenth and twentieth century Anglo-Jewry. Of particular interest are materials relating to national and international organisations and to Jewish individuals. These include the papers of Anglo-Jewish leaders, such as Selig Brodetsky, Neville Laski and Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz, and those of some of its most important institutions: the Anglo-Jewish Association, the Board of Guardians for the Relief of the Jewish Poor and the London Board of Shechita. Five hundred boxes contain the records of American prosecutors of Nazi war criminals, the subsequent proceedings at the Nuremberg Trials and documentation of the British anti-fascist organisation, Searchlight The James Parkes papers incorporate correspondence and working papers for publications, broadcasts, sermons, articles and reviews, correspondence, photographs and papers concerning the administration of the Parkes Library. Special subject areas include fascism in the East End of London 1936-1937, refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe 1938-1939, plans for a Jewish-Christian group 1940 and the Second Vatican Council 1960-1963.

jpr report No. 5 1997 The attachment of British Jews to Israel For all who want to influence the future relationship between British Jews and Israel, an understanding of where that relationship now stands and where trends suggest it might be going is essential.
Overall it was found that 43 per cent of the sample felt a strong attachment to Israel. Yet, if current trends prevail, attachment to Zionism and to the Jewish state could become the concern of only a minority with a mostly Traditional or Orthodox religious outlook.
Barry Kosmin, Antony Lerman and Jacqueline Goldberg
Summary of findings The findings in this report are based on a 1995 postal survey of a sample of 2,194 British Jews.
  • Overall it was found that 43 per cent of the sample felt a strong attachment to Israel, 38 per cent were moderately attached, 16 per cent expressed no special attachment, while 3 per cent had negative feelings towards Israel.

British versus Jewish group identity
  • When respondents selected one of the following ways of self-identification, 18 per cent replied that they felt 'more British than Jewish', 54 per cent that they felt 'equally British and Jewish' and 26 per cent that they felt 'more Jewish than British'. Only 2 per cent were unsure.
  • When these group identifications were analyzed according to age group, the percentage of those identifying themselves as more Jewish was highest among the youngest respondents and decreased with age. There was a concomitant increase with age in feeling equally British and Jewish.

WE ARE NOT THE ONLY JEWISH SCHOOL
One does not live in a vacuum. There are many other Jewish schools in England and by visiting them, observing their methods and talking to their teachers I felt I could profit greatly. Since nearly 30 years have passed since I made my visits to the various schools, met their teachers, observed many of their classes and studied their methods, I can only remember fragmentary things from my visits and it is possible that I may have muddled up certain elements of different schools. The first Jewish school I went to visit was the school I had studied in during the 1950s. It was Carmel College which had been established as a boys’ school in 1948 by Rabbi Kopul Rosen. In my day it was a relatively new school with spartan conditions. Most of the buildings were just huts. Tragically, Rabbi Dr. Rosen died in 1962 at the early age of 48. Following his death, Charles Wolfson gave a quarter of a million pounds to build a girls’ school close by. When it was built they found that Jewish parents were reluctant to send their daughters to a boarding school and the school thus became co-educational. At about the same time as I became Director of Jewish Studies in Liverpool, Jeremy the eldest son of Kopul Rosen became the new Headmaster. Apparently the Governors had chosen one of the masters to be Headmaster, had even requested his photograph for that week’s “Jewish Chronicle” and, literally, at the last moment, changed their minds and appointed Jeremy Rosen.
