6. The Jewish Anti-Nazi Boycott and the Zionist-Nazi Trade Agreement
It was not until its youth group finally rebelled and picketed a department-store chain in the autumn of 1934 that the AJC allowed its affiliates to picket recalcitrant merchants.
The appeal of the blood idea
Hitlerism, the poet feels, has rendered at least one service in drawing no lines between the faithful Jew and the apostate Jew. Had Hitler excepted the baptized Jews, there would have developed, Bialik contended, the unedifying spectacle of thousands of Jews running to the baptismal fonts. Hitlerism has perhaps saved German Jewry, which was being assimilated into annihilation. At the same time, it has made the world so conscious of the Jewish problem, that they can no longer ignore it. Bialik, like many other Zionists, thought of the Jews as something of a super race; if only they would finally come to their senses and stop wasting themselves on an ungrateful humanity and started working in their own vineyard. paganism However, by 1934 Zionism was a movement claiming over a million members world-wide and not all of them accepted the upside-down notion that Hitler really was a boon to the Jews. Some, like the American rabbi, Abraham Jacobson, protested against this insane idea, which was still quite widespread even as late as 1936:

    Science in Christian Perspective

    THE SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION MISCONSTRUED:
A reply to David Siemens and others
    DAVID C. LINDBERG*
From: JASA (September 1968): 87-91, 97. I I gnorance of the history of science has been the greatest stumbling-block for many who have attempted to describe the relationship between the Protestant Reformation and scientific developments of the 16th and 17th centuries. Non-historians of science, blissfully uninformed, rhapsodize about the transformation of scientific thought that occurred during this period, convinced not only that something dramatic happened, but also that they know what it was. This is the time, they tell us, when modern science began: Copernicus threw off the fetters of ancient astronomical systems; Galileo rejected Aristotelian physics and the scholastic method of disputation in favor of the teachings of the senses; finally, Newton brought intelligibility to the universe by formulating a science based upon mathematical law. And what was the cause of this great awakening? Protestant writers have generally seen it as a product of the Reformation; Catholics have been more prone to stress the Christian world view in general; nontheists have tended to see it as an expression of a new "hedonist-libertarian spirit" of the Renaissance. In the present paper, I am interested primarily in the former point of view, which I can illustrate with a sampling of recent claims. John Montgomery has written that "the simultaneity of the Copernican and Lutheran revolutions suggests a more than accidental relationship between them."

    Holocaust and Genocide Studies

[Access article in PDF] Pamela Shatzkes's study of Anglo-Jewish responses to the Holocaust, based on communal records as well as newly available government documents, is the most authoritative treatment thus far. She criticizes earlier interpretations by Tony Kushner, Richard Bolchover, and Geoffrey Alderman, historians who argued that the Anglo-Jewish leadership failed to help European Jews during the Holocaust because of indifference, timidity, and fear of anti-Semitism. After war broke out, the picture changed. The mission of Jewish leaders was to persuade the government to rescue European Jews. Their record...
