The Special Collections Division
The collections of the University Library number more than 1.5 million books and periodicals, including some 6,500 current titles. Books and pamphlets, collections of maps, prints and drawings, material of particular significance or rarity, together with manuscripts and archives totalling some 4 million items (from approximately 2,200 collections), are held in the Special Collections Division, filling 3.5 kilometres of shelving in air-conditioned strong-rooms. These items are available for consultation in the Division's reading rooms. The special collections have come to the University and its predecessors, the Hartley Institution and the University College of Southampton, at dates from the early 1860s, although many of the manuscript holdings have been received since 1983. They include particularly strong holdings of Jewish collections both printed and manuscript
Printed Collections
Parkes Library The Parkes Library and associated archives are one of the most important collections in Western Europe for the study of Jewish history and in particular for the study of relationships between the Jewish and non-Jewish worlds. The nucleus of the collection is the working library of Revd Dr J.W.Parkes (1896-1981), a founder member of the Council of Christians and Jews, who devoted much of his life to the promotion of understanding between members of the two faiths. The most significant sections of the Parkes Library are those dealing with the history of Jewish communities world-wide, the history of Palestine and development of Zionism, Jewish-Christian relations and anti-Semitism, with works dating from the late fifteenth century to the present. There are supporting sections on Jewish culture and sociology, collective and individual biography and on Judaism itself. In addition there is an extensive collection of bibliographies covering all aspects of Jewish/non-Jewish relations.

This article appeared in the JFS student magazine in 1963. We thought former and current students alike would be interested to read something about the people after whom the School houses are named. We have left this with the exact words and style used in 1963.
SOME BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES ON THE FOUR GREAT MEN WHOSE NAMES LIVE ON IN OUR HOUSE SYSTEM
MOSES ANGEL (1819-1898)
He was educated at H.SolomonÂ’s Boarding School at Hammersmith and at University College School. After further study at University College, London, he became a bank clerk and then took up teaching. In 1840 he was appointed Master of the Talmud Torah department of the J.F.S., and, soon after, he was made Headmaster of the entire school. Under his inspiring leadership the School rapidly developed and in 1853 was placed under Government inspection. In the same year he instituted two Teacher-Training departments in the School. So outstanding an administrator was he that even the National Education Department sought his advice.
In 1883 a Vice-Headmaster, L.B. Abrahams , was appointed and four years later in 1887 Angel resigned as Headmaster and took on the less onerous task of “Principal”, Abrahams succeeding him as Headmaster of the School. Angel published several books, including one on the Torah in 1858. He was one of the first editors of the Jewish Chronicle in the early 1840’s. In this, he was associated with the then Haham, the Rev. David Meldola.

Jewish genealogical sources at London Metropolitan Archives
London Metropolitan Archives is the largest local authority record office in the United Kingdom. Some 31 miles of archives are housed in Clerkenwell, comprising an enormous amount of information about the capital and its citizens. The records of London government, courts, hospitals, charities and businesses dating from the twelfth century to the present day are complemented by a photograph collection of 2 million images and extensive map and print holdings. Together, these records reflect the social, historical, political and economic life of London and Londoners.
Since the mid seventeenth century the majority of Jews in Britain have lived in London. Anglo-Jewish organisations of local, national and international importance are based in the capital and many of them have deposited their records at London Metropolitan Archives. In this article collections which may be of particular interest to Jewish genealogists are detailed.
Genealogists will be particularly interested in the admission and discharge registers of pupils LMA holds for JFS. These date from 1869-1939. For researchers who are interested in earlier lists of pupils there are some partial lists (mainly 1826-1828) contained in minute books.

39. Jews' Free School, London

http://www.tymsder.co.uk/jfs.htm
J.F.S.THE HISTORY OF THE JEWS' FREE SCHOOL, LONDON SINCE 1732
By Dr Gerry Black
The Jews' Free School, founded in London's East End in 1732, and for the past forty years situated in Camden Town, is one of London's and Anglo-Jewry's oldest and most outstanding institutions. In 1900, with more than 4,000 pupils, it was the largest school in Europe (and most probably in the world).
Between 1880 and 1900, one third of all London's Jewish children passed through its doors. many arrived unable to speak English. The School, the best equipped elementary school in England, gave them a refuge and a means of escape from poverty, educated them in both secular and religious studies, anglicized them, and sent them out into the world fitted to take their part in society, from Barney Barnato to Bud Flanagan and Alfred Marks, from Israel Zangwill and Selig Brodetsky to 'Two Gun' General Cohen. This book sets the achievements of the men, women and children who took part in its story in the wider context of the history of London, of Anglo-Jewry, and of the development of English national education.
"An original contribution to London, Anglo-Jewish and British social and educational history, one marked by a breadth and depth of scholarly research and presented in an easy flowing style. It will provide informative and enjoyable reading for a wide readership". Professor William J. Fishman.
