Henry Briggs was the man most responsible for scientists' acceptance of logarithms. He is of great importance in the development of mathematics but, as Hill writes in [8]:- ... significant though Briggs was as a mathematician in his own right, his greatest importance was as a contact and public relations man. Briggs was born at Warley Wood (or Warleywood) in the parish of Halifax, Yorkshire. His birth is recorded in the Halifax parish register as February 1561 yet this information contradicts a notice by J Mede written at Christ's College Cambridge on 6 February 1630, a few days after Briggs died, which states (see for example [1]):- Mr Henry Briggs of Oxford, the great mathematician, is lately dead, at years of age. If Mede were correct then Briggs would have been born in 1556, but it seem highly unlikely that he is correct, for there seems no possible reason to think that the Halifax parish records could be wrong. We know little of Briggs's family but there is a history of Norfolk, by Blomefield, which states that Briggs's family were originally from Salle in that county. Blomefield is known to be wrong in a number of other such claims so not too much weight should be put on this statement, although, on the other hand, there is some evidence that other members of Briggs's family did have Norfolk connections. In fact Richard Briggs, who was Henry Briggs's brother, became headmaster of a school in Norfolk. Richard Briggs had important friends such as Ben Jonson, the dramatist, poet, and literary critic and a letter from Ben Jonson to Richard Briggs still exists.

Briggs logarithms. Achievement Briggs is especially known for his publication of tables of logarithms to the base 10, first Logarithmorum chilias prima, 1617, and later Arithmetica logarithmetica, 1624. He also composed a work on trigonometry (basically tables, both of the functions and of the logs of sines and tangents) that was left unfinished at his death; Gellibrand completed and published it. And he left quite a few mathematical manuscripts that remained unpublished.
Biography Father
Occupation: Unknown Thomas Smith, writing early in the 18th century, said that Briggs' parents were "humble of class and rather slender of means." Humble of class could mean too many things to guess, but I take the slender means to state unmistakably that they were poor. Smith indicates that Briggs could not have attended Cambridge without financial assistance from his college.

Briggs, Henry
English mathematician, with John Napier one of the founders of calculation by logarithms. Briggs's tables remain the basis of those used to this day.
Briggs was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, and studied at Cambridge, where he became a lecturer. He was professor of geometry at the newly established Gresham College, London, 1596-1620, and then became professor of geometry at Oxford.
In 1614 Scottish mathematician John Napier had published his discovery of logarithms, and Briggs went to Edinburgh to meet him 1616. On this and subsequent visits the two men worked together to simplify Napier's original logarithms. It seems most probable that the idea of having a table of logarithms with 10 for their base was originally conceived by Briggs; the first such tables were published by him 1617, under the title Logarithmorum Chilias Prima, and were followed in 1624 by the Arithmetica Logarithmica, in which the tables were given to 14 significant figures.
The logarithms of Briggs (and Napier) were logarithms of sines, a reflection of their interest in astronomy and navigation. For that reason Briggs's logarithms were 109 times 'larger' than those in modern tables.

BRIGGS, HENRY McFarlanes Lives and Exploits of Banditti and Robbers (London, 1837) is a useful introduction to the subject. The author saw a part of what he wrote about, and gives many references, particularly for Italy- A good bibliography of Spanish brigandage will be found in the Resena Historica de Ia Guardia Civil of Eugenio de Ia Iglesia (Madrid, 1898). For actual pictures of the life, nothing is better than the English Travellers and Italian Brigands of W. J. C. Moens (London, 1866), and The Brigands of the Morea, by S. Soteropoulos, translated by the Rev. J. 0. Bagdon (London, 1868). (D. H.) Briggs, Henry
Born: February 1561, Warleywood, Yorkshire, Eng.
Died: Jan. 26, 1630, Oxford, Oxfordshire English mathematician who invented the common, or Briggsian, logarithms. His writings were mainly responsible for the widespread acceptance of logarithms throughout Europe. His innovation was instrumental in easing the burden of mathematicians, astronomers, and other scientists who must make long and tedious calculations. In 1592 Briggs became reader of the Linacre Lecture and in 1596 first professor of geometry at Gresham House (later, College), London. In his lectures at Gresham he proposed that the logarithms of the Scottish mathematician and inventor of logarithms, John Napier, would be more useful if they had a base of 10. In conferences with Napier the alteration proposed by Briggs was agreed upon, and on his return from a second visit to Edinburgh in 1617 he accordingly published the first 1,000 of his logarithms. In 1619 he was appointed Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford University. He published a small tract entitled A Treatise of the Northwest Passage to the South Sea, Through the Continent of Virginia and by Fretum Hudson
