Remembering Olga Taussky Todd
Written by Chandler Davis, University of Toronto
Reprinted from the AWM Newsletter, January-February, 1996, Volume 26, #1, with permission of the author and the Association of Women in Mathematics. The field she is most identified with which might be called "linear algebra and applications" through "real and complex matrix theory" would be preferred by some did not exist in the 1930's, despite the textbook by C.C. MacDuffee. Her stature in that field is the very highest, as was palpable in the standing ovation after her survey talk at the second Raleigh conference in 1982. In tracing her professional development, I will say a little about how the field came together. Like other Jews in Germany and Austria, Olga Taussky would have had to leave by about 1938. Some delayed as long as they could; some, too long. She left in 1934. She moved, after a year at Bryn Mawr, to Girton College Cambridge, and remained in England until after World War II. It is amusing to hear the story of her job interview, where a member of the committee asked her, with motivation we can imagine, "I see you have written several joint papers. Were you the senior or the junior author?" Another member of the committee was G.H. Hardy, who interjected, "That is a most improper question. Do not answer it!" At another interview she was asked, "I see you have collaborated with some men, but with no women. Why?" Olga replied that that was why she was applying for a position in a women's college!

Twenty southern medical schools met to discuss the program, and approved the establishment of the ORINS Medical Division. Dr. Marshall Brucer, of the University of Texas Department of Physiology, assumed the position of division chairman on December 30, 1948.

In March 1948, the Board instituted a Science Research Awards program to honor outstanding research in the basic sciences from faculty or staff at member universities. The first three winners of the $500 awards were Dr. Alfred Brauer, University of North Carolina; Dr. Walter Gordy, Duke University; and Dr. Allan Gwathmey, University of Virginia. The Special Training Division was organized in 1948 to provide training to professional personnel in the use of radioactive isotopes, which had become available in quantity during the postwar period. On March 13, 1948, Dr. Ralph Overman was named Acting Head of the new division. ORINS conducted the first of its courses during the summer of 1948 in three 4-week sessions. On May 3, 1948, the first graduate fellow, Leighton A. Nutting, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, reported to the Biology Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to begin thesis research as part of ORINS' Graduate Training Program, designed to open the doors of the national laboratory to graduate students. This program was renamed the Oak Ridge Graduate Program in 1950.

In this biographical essay, I will try to give an impression of him as a person, beginning with his student days at the University of Berlin. T plan to give an account of some of his interactions with people who contributed to his development as a mathematician and with those who collaborated with him. I have also included sketches of how his work progressed at different periods of his life, and what it means for us today. I am not writing as an historian, but as a mathematician with an interest in the history of things I have worked on. Richard Brauer was born in Berlin a century ago, the youngest of the three children of Max and Lilly Caroline Brauer. The influences that led him to mathematics and his mathematical education are described in a brief autobiographical note he wrote as the Preface to his Collected Papers [15]. Most of the following remarks about his early years are based on it.1

Classical Composition is fascinatingly complex in its details yet lyrically evocative of arcadian beauty. Similar in composition to both Cole's Dream of Arcadia of 1838 (Denver Art Museum) and Durand's own Morning of Life, one of a pair with The Evening of Life (both 1840, National Academy Museum, New York City), Classical Composition was commissioned by John David Wolfe (1792-1872), a New York collector who also bought another Durand called The Wanderer's Home (c. 1850, whereabouts unknown). The two may have formed a pair contrasting old and new world scenery. When the Wolfe collection was sold in 1863 they were listed consecutively in the catalogue and were purchased by the same buyer for $490 apiece.(1) Lines of poetry were quoted for each. For Classical Composition (which was called Classic Italy in the catalogue) the lines were from canto IV of Byron's Childe Harold:

    Introduction
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, Meinen Damen and Herren. First of all let me thank the organizers for inviting me to speak on this important occasion. As you will see, it was my late wife Olga Taussky who should have talked, but I lost her seven years ago. When I chose my title, I soon found that there was a remarkable parallelism between ETH and the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), and so I arranged a surveying with pages devoted to ETH and NBS which will be supplemented by more detail as necessary.
    Olga and Professor Stiefel (1929-1932)
Although Olga's thesis was on Algebraic Number Theory (Classfield Theory), she had also obtained results in Topological Algebra and approached Professor Heinz Hopf for advice on how to prove a converse of one of them. He told her to get in touch with Stiefel. This meeting only took place twenty years later at the NBS Institute for Numerical Analysis at the University of California at Los Angeles (NBS-INA-UCLA).

    A report from Volume 4, #1 , of TopCom
On June 23 I had my weekly luncheon date with Leonard Lipschitz, first meeting him in my office. As usual, I had picked up my mail from my mailbox and I had just begun to look through it, when Leonard entered my office. Among the daily pieces of junk mail, solicitations from political and charity organizations, there was a large sheet with the word Telex in large boll letters in the center of it. I had never before seen a piece of telex and I was ready to drop it in the wastepaper basket, thinking it was another ad from a computer company, when Leonard stopped me and pointed to the top line on the sheet. I read "Der Regierende Buergermeister Von Berlin". I was puzzled, why would I receive mail from the office of the mayor of Berlin, but I was not curious enough to pursue this matter right now. But Leonard urged me to read on, it was important news. To my astonishment I read the following letter on the attached sheet: Sehr geehrter Herr Professor

But any divisible torsion groups can occur (also Merkurjev). The Ulm length of Br(K) can be as large as Omega^3 (Fein-Schacher), but it is also not known if it can be arbitrarily large.
