Alfred Brauer 's father was Max Brauer who was a well-off businessman in the wholesale leather trade. Max Brauer's wife was Lilly Caroline and Alfred was the oldest of their three children. He had an younger, and more famous, brother Richard Brauer , who also has a biography in this archive. Alfred Brauer was seven years older than Richard and of an age between the two brothers was Alfred's sister Alice. The Brauers were a Jewish family and they would live through a period in German history when to be non-Aryan brought great hardships and suffering. World War I was a difficult time for Alfred Brauer and had he not had a great determination he would never have overcome the almost impossible odds against him making a career in mathematics. He was 20 years of age at the outbreak of the war and he served for four years in the German army. He was seriously wounded during the war and effectively lost seven years at what is for most mathematicians the most crucial time in their development. Brauer was back studying at the University of Berlin after World War I. In 1920 he attended

Alfred Brauer was seven years older than Richard and of an age between the two brothers was Richard's sister Alice. Richard entered the Kaiser-Friedrich-Schule in Charlottenburg in 1907. Charlottenburg was a district of Berlin which was not incorporated into the city until 1920. Richard studied at this school until 1918 and it was during his school years that he developed his love of mathematics and science. However, this was not due to the teaching at the school, but it came about through the influence of his brother Alfred. In [4] Richard writes about his school teachers who he describes as not being very competent. There was one exception however, and it was fortunate that this good teacher was a mathematician who had a doctorate awarded for research done under Frobenius 's supervision.

The Alfred T. Brauer Library is a unit of the Main Library System, receiving operations and facilities support from the departments of Computer Science Mathematics Physics and Astronomy , and Statistics and Operations Research . The Library's fundamental responsibility is to serve as a campus-wide information resource for those doing research in the mathematical, physical, and computing sciences. Given the interdisciplinary nature of these areas, the Library's collection is also of interest to researchers in the fields of the social sciences, business, medicine, biostatistics, biomedical engineering, environmental sciences and engineering, and information and library science. As part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Brauer Library has an obligation to fulfill the information needs of the entire University community, while as a public institution it also recognizes broader local, regional, and state-wide commitments.

Investigation Authentication schedule
Without fail and virtually every day, we hear another tale of woe and see yet another fake of one sort or another which sees clients money going down the drain.
Other clients make what they think are sound investments at land based auctions, with some acquiring pieces through inheritance.
We investigate the authenticity of literally hundreds of 'purportedly original' oil paintings and drawings annually.
Add the lithographs, etchings and limited edition prints and artists such as Picasso, Renoir and Degas, Salvador Dali, Miro, Max, Andy Warhol and Marc Chagall and you will see the problem that exists out there. Unfortumnately we also examine a similar number of "believed to be absolutely authenticl" Stradivarius violins too and investigate volumes of questionable Gallé, Limoge, Doulton, even Chiparus & Tiffany ! It's the same old story, 'Buyer beware.'
