Sutra Spoken by the Buddha on the Contemplation
Of the Two Bodhisattvas, King of Healing and
Supreme Healer
Taisho No. 1161
From the Chinese Version by the Central Asia
Tripitaka Master Kalayasas T. XX. 1161.
Introduction: Highlighting the Two Bodhisattvas
At that time the Lord entered into the samadhi (profound concentration, meditative trance) of Universal Light. All the pores of his body emitted multi-hued rays, illuminating the Monkey Grove with the colours of the seven precious substances. The light rising above the grove became a jeweled canopy, and various phenomena, rare to the realms of the Ten Directions, appeared within the canopy.
Then Jewel Heap, the elder's son, rose from his seat, faced Ananda's place, and addressed him: "O Virtuous One, today the Lord has entered into samadhi, and his entire body has blazed with light. Surely he will speak on the sublime doctrine. I sincerely wish, O Virtuous One, to know when he shall do so."
Ananda replied, "Son of the elder, the Buddha has entered into samadhi, and I dare not ask him."
When he said these words, the Buddha's eyes radiated light which illuminated the foreheads of the two Bodhisattvas King of Healing and Supreme Healer. Above their foreheads, all the limitless Buddhas of the Ten Directions dazzlingly manifested like a diamond mountain, and all these Lords also emitted light from their eyes which universally illuminated the foreheads of all the Bodhisattvas [in the assembly]. Above the foreheads of the Bodhisattvas, all the Bodhisattva-mahasattvas of the realms of the Ten Directions who had attained the surangama samadhi brilliantly appeared, resembling a lapis lazuli mountain.

"Our King Hiranyakasipu tried to console others. But sorrow burnt his own heart like fire. Even, before this, our king Hiranya- kasipu hated Vishnu. Now Hari's very name was like poison to him. His blood was boiling with the hatred of Vishnu. He called the generals of his army Illyala, Nam uchi and others. He said, 'Give the devotees of Vishnu as much trouble asyou can. Dest those who perform sacrifices and worship Vishnu.' They burnt the cities, razed temples to the ground -They destroyed the crops. They teased the people. How can we describe the bravery of the Rakshasas?" The teachers narrated this story with great joy. But Prahlada felt -sick when he heard of the evil deeds of the Rakshasas. He wished to end the evil actions of the Rakshasas. He wished to change their nature.
The teachers continued, "The King of the Rakshasas retired to the mountainMandara and began Tapas (meditation on the Lord). What a~ severe meditation it was! Tostand on the toe so as to throw the whole weight of the body on it, to hold the arms raised straight and the eyes looking up at the sky! Thus he offered a severe prayer. Many years passed. But he did not move even an inch. Flame rose from his body and enveloped the entire universe. Rivers and oceans boiled. The earth shook. Fire spread on all sides. The very gods were

There are excellent roads from Bangalor and Mysore. The nearest airport is Banglore which at a distance of 157 km. and the nearest railway station is Hassan. It is a little township tucked away between Indragiri and Chandragiri hills.
The colossal rock cut statue of saint Gommata at Sravan Belgola is the most magnificent among all Jaina works of art. It was built in circa 982 AD and is described as one of the mightiest achievements of ancient Karnataka in the realm of sculptural art. Also referred to as Lord Bahubali, the image is nude an stands upright in the posture of meditation known as kayotsarga, reaching a height of nearly 57 ft atop the Vindyagiri of Doddabetta hills accessible through a flight of 500 steps. The image of Gommata has curly hair in ringlets and long, large ears. His eyes are open as if viewing the world with detachment. His facial features are perfectly chiseled with a faint touch of a smile at the corner of his lips and embody calm vitality. His shoulders are broad, his arms stretch straight down and the figure has no support from the thigh upwards.

Magazine Published on Sundays Features: Magazine Literary Review Life Metro Plus ... Magazine A mystic journey In the heart of the jungles of northern Kerala lies the Tirunelli Perumal temple. It is, says REMA DEVI R. TONDAIMAN, a sanctuary familiar to Keralites, but little known to the commercial world.
The incomplete vilakkumaadam of the temple Right in the dense forests of Wayanad, Kerala, as a branch of the Sahyadri ranges bordering Karnataka, is the Brahmagiri hill. Tirunelli rests at the base of this hill, which is in the upper and northern part of Wayanad. Driving from Kozhikode on a road that crosses stretches of swaying palms and majestic teak, one comes across a well-kept herb garden on the outskirts of Kalpetta, the district headquarters of Wayanad. Here, Gandhigramam shops offer handicrafts, spices, essential oils, and tea and coffee. There are excellent resorts for the weary traveller along this route. The most thrilling part of the journey is when the tea, coffee and rubber estates give way to dense forest and one recedes further and further away from civilisation deep into the unspoilt heart of nature. Historic and archaeological information about the temple is meagre. It is hoped that archaeologists and Indologists will be motivated enough to investigate further locally available information. Copper plate inscriptions of the period of Bhaskara Ravi Varma I and II have been discovered here. It is thought that this was an important flourishing township and pilgrimage centre till the 16th Century. There are references to a

Shree Mangesh Temple, Goa I
F Goa has been given the epithet of the "Rome of the East" because of its imposing churches, old Goa is also known for its temples, especially Shantadurga and Mangeesh in the Ponda district of North Goa. Many of the Hindus who left Goa during the Portuguese Inquisition and now live in neighbouring states are known to return to these family deities at least once a year. But if the Portuguese imposed religion on its subjects and put up crosses and chapels in every nook and cranny, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is doing the same with its temples varying in size and stature. It is the commercialisation and politicisation of religion which has gone on for centuries. But religion apart, these temples have a historic importance and one has to experience the solace and calm that comes from visiting these holy places (temples or churches). There is an aura of peace and solitude and is probably the reason why tourists flock to these sites.
