2. When the Blessed One was in seclusion this thought and thought process arose to him: 3. The Teaching I have realized is deep, difficult to see and understand, is peaceful, exalted, not logically attained, is subtle and it is for the wise to realize. People at large, are fond of settling, attached to it and risen from settling. By the populace fond of settling, attached to it and risen from settling, this point is difficult to be seen. That is, how there is an arising because of this, this too is difficult to be seen. That is the appeasement of all determinations, the giving up of all endearments, destruction of craving, fading, cessation and extinction. If I was to preach this, others would not know what I say. I will be fatigued and it would be annoyance to me. 4. To the Blessed One these stanzas never heard before, occurred at that time.
By those overcome by greed and hate, this is not easy to realize.
It's clever, deep, difficult to see, subtle and goes against the stream.
5. When the Blessed One reflected in this manner, his mind bent to living at ease and not preaching.

A Mahábrahmá. When the Buddha was at the Ajapálanigrodha, hesitating as to whether or not he should preach the Dhamma, Sahampati appeared before him and begged of him to open to the world the doors of Immortality. The Buddha agreed to this urgent request (Vin.i.5f.;S.i.137f), and accepted from Sahampati the assurance that all the Buddhas of the past had also had no other teacher than the Dhamma discovered by them. S.i.139; see also S.v.167f.,185, 232, where he gives the same assurance to the Buddha regarding the four satipatthánas and the five indriyas; A.ii.10f. Buddhaghosa (E.g., SA.i.155) explains that the Buddha was reluctant to preach, not on account of indolence, but because he wished Sahampati to make him this request. For, thought the Buddha, the world honours Brahmá greatly, and when people realized that Brahmá himself had begged of the Buddha to spread his teaching, they would pay more attention to it. Sahampati was, at this time, the most senior of the Brahmás (jettha-Mahábrahmá) (DA.ii.467). During the time of Kassapa Buddha, Sahampati was a monk, named Sahaka, who, having practised the five indriyas (saddhá, etc.), was reborn in the Brahma world. Thereafter he was called Sahampati (S.v.233). The Commentaries say (SNA.ii.476; SA.i.155) that he was an Anágámí Brahmá born in the Suddhávásá, there to pass a whole kappa, because he had developed the first Jhána as a monk. The Buddhavamsa, Commentary (BuA.p.11; see also p.29) says that, strictly speaking, his name should be "Sahakapati." When the Buddha attained Enlightenment, Sahampati held over the Buddha's head a white parasol three yojanas in diameter. BuA.239; this incident was sculptured in the Relic Chamber of the Mahá Thúpa (Mhv.xxx.74); cp. J.iv.266.

The King Bhadrasena, after listening to the account of the past life of his son and that of the minister, prayed to Prasara Rishi to throw some light on how his son's future was going to be. The Rishi was hesitant to say anything in reply to the king. As the King was persistent, the Rishi said that the prince had only eight more days to live. The king fainted in grief of hearing this. When he recovered, he fell at the Rishi's feet and prayed that he should show him the way, his son's life could be saved. Transmission of the Uncommon Ucchusma Diamond Protector Practice (Day 1) A discourse by H.H. Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu, New York, June 21st, 1997. Translated by Janny Chow from the transcript published in the True Buddha News. Masters, reverends, and fellow students, good afternoon. [audience applause] Before we start, let us first pay homage to Namo Fundamental Teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, Namo Manifestation Body Shakyamuni Buddha, and Namo Ucchusma Great Sovereign Divine King Buddha. First, I would like to thank the students of the True Buddha Diamond Temple in New York for inviting me to such a large venue as Madison Square Garden, to conduct a major True Buddha School Dharma Ceremony. This Madison Square Garden is not just famous in New York, it is also quite well-known around the world. In the United States, a Buddhist teaching is generally attended by only two to three hundred people, so most of the time, a small venue would do. It is a major event in the Buddhist community that we are able to have a teaching here today at Madison Square Garden. [audience applause] However, after learning of the rental fee for this venue, my knees almost went weak. The cost is very high! I remember when I first emigrated to the United States in 1982, I brought a small sum of money with me and purchased a modest house in the Seattle area. The sum total of two days' rental for this venue exceeded what I brought with me from Taiwan to Seattle!

The scene was most queer; kings, princes, gods, and sages trying to out run each-other ! One of the competitors was a sage named Gautama. He was not very good at this kind of exercise although he was well known for his yogic and spiritual attainments and after an initial burst of energy his steps slowed down considerably. He lagged behind the rest but had not lost all hopes. So he kept on moving. Now it sohappened that while trodding his way in this manner he saw a cow giving birth to a calf. him, panting and puffing, but rather curiously from the direction opposite to the one from which he was expected ! He felt sorry for the man. It was obvious that he learned fellow had dropped out of the race. But no, Gautama loudly declared that he had won the race, he had circled the earth. How could it be? Brahmadeva could not believe his own ears, he shook his head in utter disbelief. Gautama stated again, this time in a louder and clearer tone for the benefit of Brahma that he had won the race. Asthavinayak Darshan - Maharashtra These temples occupy a special place in the evolution of Hindu religion. The stories of incarnation of Ganesha are ancient. Some of the temples have been renovated recently. Many were renovated during Madhavrao Peshwa period. The idols of Ashtavinayaka are self-existent. They exist in the temples as they were found. Each idol is an incarnation of Lord Ganesha. There are many mythological stories giving the importance of each Ganesha (idol). These stories tell us about why and how these idols of Ganesha got their names and came into existence. The idols are not beautiful like the man made ones but the self-existent appearance of them does please the devotees. The mangalashtaka (poetic lines spoken at the time of marriage or thread ceremony) of Ashtavinayaka is sang on holy occasions. The sequence of Ashtavinayaka pilgrimage according to the stotra (poetic line) mentioned in puran as is as follows: This yatra is very famous not only among the Hindus but devotees from all the religions go on the famous Asthavinayak tour. It is believed that one has to complete this Asthavinayak yatra at least once in a life-time. All the eight temples are located in different parts of Maharashtra.

ON THE TERM DARSANA IN JAINISM
K.P. SINHA In Jainism, the term darsana is used in three remarkable cases, namely, darsana-upayoga, kevala-darsana or ananta-darsana and samyak-darsana. In the first two cases, the term darsana carries more or less the same meaning, namely, a general grasping of the object, which clearly shows that it is a cognitive fact. The difference between the two is simply this that, in the case of darsana- upayoga, cognition is limited, while in the case of darsana-upayoga, cognition is limited, while in the case of kevala-darsana, it is unlimited. In the case of samayak-darsana, however, the term darsana is explained as bearing a different meaning, i.e. sraddhana. The term sraddhana in its turn is explained differently by different commentators and writers as will be found in our following discourse. Now, the problems before us are these: First, why has the same term darsana been used in the case of samyak-darsana to give a meaning different from that in the other two cases? Secondly, does the meaning of the term darsana used in samyak-darsana have got any relation with that of the same term in the other two cases? To solve the problems, let us discuss in detail the meanings of darsana-upayoga, kevala-darsana and samyak-darsana, with special attention to the last one, i.e. samyak-darsana.

Our Guru is the Great Mother. All Her Shakti and Yogini aspects are available for Her children. By reading The Kavach of The Devi, we mobilise these powers to purify and enlighten our Koshas (our mental, emotional and physical bodies). Thus by the Power of the Gurumata The Atma becomes The Guru of the body. While reading the Kavach of The Devi one should put one's attention on the aspect or the part of the body which is protected. One may also, while reading, pause between the Names and silently take the corresponding mantra, for example: Om Twameva Sakshat, Shri Chandi Namoh Namah The Kavach should be read aloud. It washes away the 'catches' and bathes the children in Divine Vibrations. May the wisdom and compassion of our Satguru flow through us and reach the four quarters of the earth. JAY SHRI MATAJI!

KARNATAKA : AN OVERVIEW HERITAGE OF SHRAVANABELAGOLA KARNATAKA: AN OVERVIEW An introduction to Karnataka is being reviewed in nutshell to begin with before the heritage of Shravanabelagola is discussed. It is hoped that the tourists and pilgrims visiting Karnataka in general and Shravanabelagola in particular will benefit well in their efforts to see these places. K History Karnataka bears a history of about 2000 years and occupies sixth place in its extent in India. It is said that the name Karnataka is derived from 'Karu-nadu' meaning black soil, or 'Kammitthu-nadu' meaning fragrance; it also means that it is a land situated at height. Huientsang the Chinese traveller who visited Karnataka has called the land 'Moholacha' (Maharashtra). 'Karu-nadu' means Maharashtra in Sanskrit. Art and architecture flourished well in Karnataka. Many temples, palaces, forts and fortresses have attracted the tourists in a magnetic scale. The temple mainly belonged to the Northern and Southern styles and also an amalgamation of the two called vesara. Pattadakal, Aihole and Badami Chalukyan temples were the abode of many experiments carried out on mega stones. Many cave temples and monuments were carved out of these big rocks. A unique technical expertise, a water supply system was observed meeting the needs of the people. Cave temples can also be made out situated outside Karnataka as seen in Ellora and Elephanta caves. Hoysala and Chalukyan temples are known for their filigree work depicting the episodes of Ramayana and Mahabharatha. The Shilabalikas, the dancers decorating walls are outstanding sculptors unique to Hoysala and Chalukyan styles. The palaces and administrative buildings which were evolved during the Christian and Muslim rule are known for their architectural beauty and gaiety.
