The Galileo Project Science Tycho Brahe Tycho Brahe Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) Tyge (Latinized as Tycho) Brahe was born on 14 December 1546 in Skane, then in Denmark, now in Sweden. He was the eldest son of Otto Brahe and Beatte Bille, both from families in the high nobility of Denmark. He was brought up by his paternal uncle Jörgen Brahe and became his heir. He attended the universities of Copenhagen and Leipzig, and then traveled through the German region, studying further at the universities of Wittenberg, Rostock, and Basel. During this period his interest in alchemy and astronomy was aroused, and he bought several astronomical instruments. In a duel with another student, in Wittenberg in 1566, Tycho lost part of his nose. For the rest of his life he wore a metal insert over the missing part. He returned to Denmark in 1570. Tycho Brahe with metal insert over nose In 1572 Tycho observed the new star in Cassiopeia and published a brief tract about it the following year. In 1574 he gave a course of lectures on astronomy at the University of Copenhagen. He was now convinced that the improvement of astronomy hinged on accurate observations. After another tour of Germany, where he visited astronomers, Tycho accepted an offer from the King Frederick II to fund an observatory. He was given the little island of Hven in the Sont near Copenhagen, and there he built his observatory, Uraniburg, which became the finest observatory in Europe.

Tycho Brahe Strange, but true! Tyco Brahe lived by the motto "Non viduri sed esse". Translated into English this statement reads, "Not to be seen but to be." Tyco Brahe, though of noble decent, married a commoner. Together they had three sons and five daughters. Brahe died in 1601. His last words, "Ne frusta vixisse vidar" (May I not seemed to have lived in vain") were recorded by his assistant Kepler. He is now known as "Tycho" since that is the Latinised version of his name that he adopted when he was about fifteen years old. For simplicity we shall use the name Tycho throughout this biography. Otte Brahe, Tycho's father, was from the Danish nobility and was an important man among the Danish King's closest group of supporters. Beate Bille, Tycho's mother, also came from an important family which had produced leading churchmen and politicians. Tycho was one of twin sons, but his twin died shortly after birth. His parents had one older daughter but Tycho was their eldest son. Here is a picture of his birthplace A strange episode occurred when Tycho was two years old. His uncle, Jorgen Brahe (in Tycho's own words, see for example [5]):- ... without the knowledge of my parents took me away with him while I was in my earliest youth. It was a strange episode since it did not appear to cause any family disputes nor did his parents try to take him back. Jorgen Brahe and his wife Inger Oxe had no children of their own, and they acted as foster parents to Tycho until Jorgen's death. Jorgen Brahe, like his brother Otte Brahe, was a leading Danish noble while Inger Oxe was the sister of Peder Oxe who was a member of the Rigsraads, the governing council consisting of 20 advisors to the King. In fact Tycho benefited most on the educational side from his foster mother Inger Oxe who had scholarly interests as did other members of her family, while the Brahes and the Billes had little time for scholarly pursuits.

Father Occupation: Aristocrat Natural father: Otte Brahe, a member of the powerful Brahe family. He was later governor of Helsingborg castle, and, from 1563, a member of the Rigsraad, an approximately 20 member oligarchy that ruled Denmark. Natural mother: Beate Billie, a member of the Billie family, which also had a significant number of seats on the Rigsraad. Foster father: Jorgen Brahe (d. 1565), brother of Otte. Commander first of Traneker, then Naesbyhoved, and finally Vordingsborg castle. By 1558 he had one of the greatest assemblages of fiefs in Denmark. However, this was seriously compromised in the power struggle of 1558 in which Peter Oxe was sent into exile. At this time Jorgen relinquished the fiefs given to him by the King and transfered to Nyboking, a fief given to him by Queen Sophie. He was the vice-admiral of the Danish fleet when he died in 1565. Foster mother: Inger Oxe, member of the Oxe family, which had one member on the Rigsraad. She was the sister of Peter, the strongman who essentially ruled Denmark from about 1566.

Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler (Condensed Version: see below for links to fuller version) Michael Fowler University of Virginia Index of Lectures and Overview of the Course Link to Previous Lecture These two colorful characters made crucial contributions to our understanding of the universe - Tycho's observations were accurate enough for Kepler to discover that the planets moved in elliptic orbits, and his other laws, which gave Newton the clues he needed to establish universal inverse-square gravitation. What you should know: Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), from a rich Danish noble family, was fascinated by astronomy, but disappointed with the accuracy of tables of planetary motion at the time. He decided to dedicate his life and considerable resources to recording planetary positions ten times more accurately than the best previous work. After some early successes, and in gratitude for having his life saved by Tycho's uncle, the king of Denmark gave Tycho tremendous resources - an island with many families on it, and money to build an observatory. (One estimate is that this was 10% of the gross national product at the time!) Tycho built vast instruments to set accurate sights on the stars, and used multiple clocks and timekeepers. He achieved his goal of measuring to one minute of arc. This was a tremendous feat before the invention of the telescope. His aim was to confirm his own picture of the universe, which was that the earth was at rest, the sun went around the earth and the planets all went around the sun - an intermediate picture between Ptolemy and Copernicus.
