I. 'Pre-Scientific' Thought: A. Frankfort's view of myth: 1. A subjective mode of explanation/description of Nature, based on an 'I-Thou' intimacy with Nature; hence, a highly individual approach to phenomena concentrating on specific aspects rather than general patterns. a. This approach was decisively overturned by the Pre-Socratics who developed a supposedly objective 'I-It' relation with Nature. B. Giorgio de Santillana's view of myth: 1. Many myths seem global in character, indicating that, in spite of vast geographical separation, various cultures were attempting to explain a 'shared experience'. a. This shared experience was a comprehension of large cosmic events such as the precession of the equinoxes. b. The capability of 'primitive' cultures to comprehend such events is indicated, if Gerald Hawkins is right, by Stonehenge. II. Egyptians and Babylonians:

CONTENTS In 1334 he became High Chancellor of England, and Treasurer in 1336, resigning the former office in 1335, so that he might help the King in dealing with affairs abroad and in Scotland, and took a most distinguished part in diplomatic negociations between England and France. In 1339 he was again in his bishopric. Thereafter his name occurs often among those appointed to treat of peace with Philip of France, and with Bruce of Scotland. It appears that he was not in Parliament in 1344. Wasted by long sicknesslonga infirmitate decoctuson the 14th of April, 1345, Richard de Bury died at Auckland, and was buried in Durham Cathedral. Aims and Objectives
Description
Through lectures, the course will outline the main theological and philosophical controversies of the medieval period and explain how a coherent picture of events may be derived from the range of primary sources that survive. The differing positions of Jewish, Islamic and Christian thinkers will be explored and analysed. In their own time, and by way of preparing for the classes, students will be expected to study particular texts in order to enhance their understanding of the methodological issues involved, and to develop their appreciation of the medieval period.
Seminar plan
A norm of twenty-two seminars is assumed:
First Semester
The Contribution of the Fathers: The origins of medieval theology The Study of sacra doctrina in the monastic schools The controversy over the Eucharist from Benegar to Lombard Anselm and the schools on fides quaerens intellectum Jewish, Christian and Islamic theological dialogue in the twelfth century. Richard of St Victor on the Trinity and Holy Spirit.

The Middle Ages to the Renaissance
Thomas Bradwardine (1290-1349)
A man known throughout Europe as "Doctor Profundus", Bradwardine wrote four books on pure mathematics: Arithmeticae Speculativa , on the theory of numbers, Tractatus de proportionibus, Geometria speculativa , and De quadratura circuli on geometry. The first statutes for Balliol required students to leave after graduating, and Bradwardine, like several other mathematicians, subsequently moved to Merton College. The "Merton School", which became famous for its study of dynamics and anticipated some of Newton's laws of motion, took their inspiration from Bradwardine's De proportionibus velocitatum in motibus of 1328. This work was also important for its study of non-linear power laws. He was Professor of Theology at Oxford, then Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral, and died of the Black Death shortly after becoming Archbishop of Canterbury. Further information about Bradwardine
