Boyle, Robert
Irish chemist and physicist who published the seminal The Sceptical Chymist 1661. He formulated Boyle's law 1662. He was a pioneer in the use of experiment and scientific method.
Boyle questioned the alchemical basis of the chemical theory of his day and taught that the proper object of chemistry was to determine the compositions of substances. The term 'analysis' was coined by Boyle and many of the reactions still used in qualitative work were known to him. He introduced certain plant extracts, notably litmus, for the indication of acids and bases. He was also the first chemist to collect a sample of gas.
Boyle was born in Lismore, County Waterford. He lived in Oxford, England, 1654-68, and subsequently in London. As a student he joined a group whose aim was to cultivate the 'new philosophy'; this became the Royal Society 1662.
He learned Hebrew, Greek, and Syriac to further his studies of the Bible, and endowed the Boyle Lectures for the defence of Christianity.
Boyle pointed out that bodies alter in weight according to the varying buoyancy of the atmosphere. These findings were published in The Spring of Air 1660.

Robert Boyle Dates:
Born: January 25, 1627
Died: December 31, 1691 Biography:
Robert Boyle was an English chemist who was responsible for the final separation between modern chemistry and medieval alchemy. According to Boyle, chemistry is best done by relying upon repeated experimental evidence rather than the traditional assumption that all matter is composed of some mystical, common elements. As a result of his methodology, he discovered the fundamental relationship between temperature, pressure and volume in gases. Boyle was a founder of the Royal Society, which took as its motto Nullius in Verba , a Latin phrase which means "nothing by mere authority."

Boyle is often referred to as the father of modern chemistry; he separated chemistry from alchemy and gave the first precise definitions of a chemical element, a chemical reaction, and chemical analysis. He also made studies of the calcination of metals, combustion, acids and bases, the nature of colors, and the propagation of sound. Although he was especially noted for his experimental work, Boyle also contributed to physical theory, supporting an early form of the atomic theory of matter, which he called the corpuscular philosophy, and using it to explain many of his experimental results. His extensive writings contributed greatly to the dominance of the mechanistic theory following Newton's work. Boyle was one of the group at Oxford that later became the Royal Society, but he refused the presidency of the society in 1680, as well as many other honors. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia

ROBERT BOYLE
BOYLE, ROBERT In person Boyle was tall, slender and of a pale countenance. His constitution was far from robust, and throughout his life he suffered from feeble health and low spirits. While his scientific work procured him an extraordinary reputation among his contemporaries, his private character and virtues, the charm of his social manners, his wit and powers of conversation, endeared him to a large circle of personal friends. He was never married. His writings are exceedingly voluminous, and his style is clear and straightforward, though undeniably prolix. BOYLE, Robert The Sceptical Chemist (Ox 1680). In physics he studied mechanical properties, and the pressure of air and other gases. He began tomeasure the volume of air under different pressures. He proved that the volume of a given quanity of gas at a stable temperature is inversely proportional to its pressure (the so-called Boyle-Mariotte Law). He improved the air pump. He presented a synthesis of his research in New Experiments Physico-Mechanical Touching the Spring of the Air and Its Effects (Ox 1660). In Experiments and Considerations Touching Colours (Ox 1664) he described the phenomenon of electricity and the nature of light (he held that colors are modifications of white light). In the area of anatomy and medicine he published Disquisition about the Final Cause of Natural Things (Lo 1668) and Tracts Consisting of Observations about Cosmical Qualities of Things (Lo 1670). Boyle also defended religious values. He referred to religious and moral contents when he related his philosophical views and explained that there is no contradiction between science and faith. He used argumentation of an apologetic type (cf. The Excellency of Theology Copmared with Natural Philosophy , Lo 1673;

BOYLE, ROBERT (1627 - 1691). . London, 1680. Second edition of Boyle's masterpiece of scientific literature (of the first edition fewer than 35 copies are known). It is difficult to realize how confused and confusing chemical reactions appeared in Boyle's day. In the form of a dialog, the Sceptical Chymist presented Boyle's hypothesis that matter consisted of atoms and clusters of atoms in motion and that every phenomenon was the result of collisions of particles in motion. He appealed to chemists to experiment and asserted that experiments denied the limiting of elements to only the classic four: earth, fire, air, and water. He also pleaded that chemistry cease being subservient to medicine or to alchemy, but rise to the status of a science. For these reasons, Boyle has been called the founder of modern chemistry. The Sceptical Chymist is written in a good, though rather prolix, style, enlivened with touches of humor, as when the alchemists are compared with "the Navigators of Solomon's Tarshish Fleet, who brought home . . . not only Gold, and Silver, and Ivory, but Apes and Peacocks too", since their theories "either like Peacock's feathers make a great shew, but are neither solid nor useful; or else, like Apes, if they have some appearance of being rational, are blemish'd with some absurdity or other which makes them appear ridiculous." The chief value of the

Robert Boyle
