Eleanor Soule Johnson
CHEBEAGUE ISLANDEleanor Soule Johnson, 87, died unexpectedly at her home on Chebeague Island, Saturday, September 25th. Eleanor was born in Portland, Maine, January 10, 1912, a daughter of Horace Soule, a former Portland Policeman, and Laura Franklin Fischer from Sheet Harbor, Nova Scotia. She grew up on Vesper Street in Portland and attended Portland schools. She summered on Chebeague with her family and later met and married Sherman Johnson of Portland who also summered on Chebeague. They lived for a short time in Kennebunk, Wells, and Portland and in 1946 made Chebeague their permanent home. Eleanor (affectionately known as Baa) was interested in many things. She enjoyed collecting antiques and was especially proud of her colored cruet collection. She enjoyed reading mysteries and watching her backyard birds. She had many memorable hours with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a deep interest in life and would lie awake nights with concern for the welfare of her family, friends, and neighbors. Eleanor will be well remembered and greatly missed by all. She was a member of the Chebeague Historical Society, the Chebeague Island Council, and the Maine Historical Society.

Music Professors Stilwell, Bowen Pick up the Tempo in Expanding Department
By Kristen Mascia
Special to The Hoya Courtesy Jose Bowen Music
Georgetown’s very first Caestecker chair of the Music Program in Performing Arts failed his music aptitude test. The Seashore Aptitude test was a two-part exam that sought to determine whether or not young children were musically inclined. José Bowen failed both parts. He was eight years old, and apparently without a future in music. “So my mother put me in recorder class with the rest of the rejects,” Bowen says. From there, he went on to play “basically anything I could get my hands on.” When he headed the jazz program at Stanford University years later, he had the opportunity to meet test-developer Carl Seashore. “By then, the test had been discontinued,” he adds with a smile. Meet Professor José Bowen. He’s played with Liberace and jammed with Stan Getz and Dizzy Gillespie. His music has been performed on both coasts and everywhere in between — Omaha, Louisiana and Michigan, to name just a few. He has degrees in chemistry, art history, the humanities and, of course, in music (in both composition and musicology). One of his books, Conducting, was just released in November, and he has contracts on a few more. He has a family. And by day, he does what he loves: teaches and performs. This man is not a failure.

William Lowell Putnam Competition
The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition is an annual contest for college students established in 1938 in memory of its namesake. Cash prizes for the top five teams in 2001 ranged from $25,000 to $5,000. Cash prizes for the top five individuals in 2001 were $2,500 each. In this list below the individual winners are listed in alphabetical order. The Elizabeth Lowell Putnam Prize was established in 1992 to be "awarded periodically to a woman whose performance on the Competition has been deemed particularly meritorious". In 2001 the Elizabeth Lowell Putnam prize was $1,000. Over the years many of the winners of the Putnam competition have become distinguished mathematicians. Several winners have received the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Match Report vs Charlton 6 December 1997 (League Division One)
READING 2 Charlton
Att: 8,000 Team: Hammond, Booty, Swales, Lambert (Lovell), McPherson, Primus, Parkinson, Hodges (Caskey), Asaba, Morley, Williams.
Sub (not used): Thorp. Goal Scorers: Hodges, Morley(penalty). Report from the Evening Post by Clive Baskerville LEE HODGES was just nine minutes into his first start for two months when he scored the goal that set Reading on their way to a hard-earned three points against high-flying Charlton Athletic. The former Spurs and Barnet midfielder found the target with a well-struck left-foot drive from the edge of the box - just as he did at Portsmouth before suffering the knee injury that kept him sidelined for six weeks. Hodges, 24, has shown a keen eye for the net since joining Royals in the summer for £100,000 and there was no doubting the value of his latest strike. He told me: "I got a great connection on the ball and the bottom corner was the only place the ball was going to go. Every goal I score is a delight for me, but that was was a bit special because of the period I had been out." The win, only the second time Royals have won twice in a row in the Nationwide League, Division 1 this season, was sealed when Trevor Morley sidefooted in his 12th consecutive goal as a result of a penalty kick. And it helped push Reading up to 16th spot - their highest place this term. Reading still had to endure strong second-half pressure from Addicks, but the defence held firm with left-back Steve Swales particularly impressive, twice clearing off the line to deny Shaun Newton in the closing stages. Hodges, who had shaken off a knee injury to play, was brought back in after four games as substitute because Ray Houghton failed a fitness test on a calf strain. His inclusion gave manager Terry Bullivant the opportunity to bring Stuart Lovell into the squad for the first time this season after an operation to repair damaged knee ligaments in May.

We are proud of being Welsh, but how this translates as being anti English I don't know. My girlfriend is English she feels fine in there, exept when snail tries it on (mate). In response to Nicola from London's comment it is Dyfed not Iestyn that makes the best chips ever. Turlough o'conghaile from Monaghan at first found it a little intimidating esp on welsh societies nights etc. But over all its a good place...not quite the best pub in aber but a great place to go and watch rugby.
