'Taste My Prosciutto,'
He Said With a Drawl
by Dana Bowen
Rufus Brown looks up and observes his hams. They are hanging by the hundreds in neat rows high above him. After climbing stairs and crossing a creaky catwalk, he finds the one he is looking for, up near the roof, where he put it last year. With a poke and sniff of the hard, musty ham, he decides it is ready: by tomorrow, it will be sliced thin and tucked into panini by customers. This aging room, its pine beams slick with a half-century of fat, looks as if it belongs in Langhirano, the breezy hill town in the northern Italian province of Emilia-Romagna, where prosciutto di Parma undergoes a long curing. But this isn't Italy, and these meats aren't drying prosciuttos. It's Smithfield, N.C., and they are long-aged country hams. Mr. Brown is one of the few small commercial producers who still hang country hams for longer than six months, rendering the meat dark red and velvety with a complex flavor similar to that of prosciutto. "More and more people are eating my hams like prosciutto," said Mr. Brown, 36, who became cure master at Johnston County Hams when his father, Jesse, died in 1996. "Of course, that's not how it's usually eaten here," he said softly.

Theatre: Cadillac Palace

Though November 23, 2003 Well, the wait is over! After many months of anticipation, The Lion King has finally roared into Chicago. This Chicago point-of-origin tour will be here for quite a while before it moves on. My only regret is that it is not a permanent fixture on Randolph Street. Disney’s track record has always been strong. On screen, the vast canon of animated films has captured the hearts of millions, so it was only fitting that live theatre was the next step.

We construct Markov partitions for hyperbolic toral automorphisms by considering a special class of self similar tilings modulo the integer lattice. We use the digit expansions inherited from these tilings to give a symbolic representation for the toral automorphisms. References:

Additional information Abstract: We conjecture that the fractal dimension of hyperbolic sets can be computed by adding those of their stable and unstable slices. This would facilitate substantial progress in the calculation or estimation of these dimensions, which are related in deep ways to dynamical properties. We prove the conjecture in a model case of Smale solenoids. References:

GEORGE BOWEN MATHEWSON BIOGRAPHY AS RECORDED IN: COMMEMORATIVE BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF TOLLAND AND WINDHAM COUNTIES CONNECTICUT. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF PROMINENT AND REPRESENTATIVE CITIZENS AND OF MANY OF THE EARLY SETTLED FAMILIES. GEORGE BOWEN MATHEWSON. During his long and well remembered career in Pomfret, Windham county, George Bowen Mathewson was not only associated with the agricultural and political advancement of his adopted locality, but by reason of pronounced talent, built up a reputation as an artist by no means local. A scholar also, and an earnest student of men and events, his horizon was necessarily a broad one, and caused him to be an important figure in a time when the hand guiding the plow and harrow recognized in the surrounding landscape a chance for harvests only rather then an opportunity for pictorial delineation. Yet in the life of this man, so appreciative of the fine and beautiful things of this world, farm work had its compensations and seems to have been harmoniously blended with a study of the classics,
and with the portrayal upon canvas of the sunsets, dawns and faces which made up his environment. Born in the beginning of the nineteenth century, in 1804, he was but a lad when the family fortunes were shifted from the Israel Putnam farm in Brooklyn, Conn., to Pomfret, where he received his preliminary education at the district schools, where he spent his entire life, and where his death occurred in 1877. He was a worthy descendant of one of the oldest families in Connecticut, and it was ever his design to maintain its traditions and excellencies.

    Mathematics Pronunciation Guide
A Megametamathematical Guide, for the Diacritally Challenged, of the Proper American English Pronunciation of Terms and Names This guide includes most mathematicians and mathematical terms that may been encountered in high school and the first two years of college. Proper names are generally pronounced as in the original language.
Some entries are obscure and may be useful only in a game of mathematical trivia, e. g. d'Alembert's
mother, the name of the line in a fraction, or who shot Galois.
I have not had the time to include most definitions or accomplishments. The curious person may try searching the internet for such information. However I have given a few, they are indicated with Move the curser to the symbol and wait a second.
D ates include B.C. or A.D. only if the choice is not obvious from the context.
The Guide is not complete, I will be adding more pronunciations and entries as time permits. (I did not give up my day job.) (The red dates and purple pronunciations are not links.)
