Nathaniel Bowditch 's father was Habakkuk Bowditch who was a cooper, that is a maker and repairer of wooden casks. His mother was Mary Ingersoll. Although Nathaniel was born in Salem, Massachusetts, his family moved to Danvers, also in Massachusetts, while he was still a baby. After a few years, when Nathaniel was seven years old, they returned to Salem. As Albree writes in [8]:- The first years of Bowditch's life revolved around Salem, Massachusetts, a compact seafaring town along the picturesque north shore, miles north of Boston. This was a hard time for the Bowditch family. Habakkuk Bowditch's business collapsed and the family hit really hard times financially. Although Nathaniel went to school until he was ten years old, his formal education had to end at that point and he began working in his father's cooperage shop. After two years of helping his father, Nathaniel became an apprentice clerk in the ship's chandler shop of Hodges and Ropes in Salem in 1785. This shop dealt in provisions and supplies for ships. In 1790 Bowditch, aged seventeen by this time, changed his employers and began working for the shop of Samuel C Ward. Although Bowditch was working as a clerk, he was educating himself throughout this period. Reingold writes in [1]:-

    Bowditch, Nathaniel
    Born: March 26, 1773, Salem, Mass. [U.S.]
Died: March 16, 1838, Boston, Mass., U.S. Self-educated American mathematician and astronomer, author of the best book on navigation of his time, and discoverer of the Bowditch curves, which have important applications in astronomy and physics. Between 1795 and 1799 Bowditch made four lengthy sea voyages, and in 1802 he was put in command of a merchant vessel. Throughout that period he pursued his interest in mathematics. After investigating the accuracy of The Practical Navigator , a work by the Englishman J.H. Moore, he produced a revised edition in 1799. His additions became so numerous that in 1802 he published The New American Practical Navigator , based on Moore's book, which was adopted by the U.S. Department of the Navy and went through some 60 editions. Bowditch also wrote many scientific papers, one of which, on the motion of a pendulum swinging simultaneously about two axes at right angles, described the so-called Bowditch curves (better known as the Lissajous figures, after the man who later studied them in detail). Bowditch translated from the French and updated the first four volumes of Pierre-Simon Laplace's monumental work on the gravitation of heavenly bodies, , more than doubling its size with his own commentaries. The resulting work

Newburyport, Massachusetts, 1802 Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Nathaniel Bowditch grew up in the seafaring culture of late 18th-century New England. His love of mathematics, astronomy, and sailing are combined in this manual on navigation, which was printed in more than 70 editions between 1802 and 1876, a powerful testimonial to the importance of the book in guiding generations of American ocean-going navigators. [monoprint, computer printing, rubber stamping, gouache, metallic pen] Land-locked in Atlanta and longing for the open sea, Pattie Belle Hastings was intrigued by Bowditch's directions for sailing a large vessel. His instructions for charting a ship's course using fixed points of reference serve the artist as a metaphor for navigating through life. Hastings unites her own practical experiences with seafaring terms from Bowditch's work. Herald of Science Download full-size JPEG (318K) or GIF (204K) image.

Pride Of the Windjammer Fleet Climb aboard Captain Gib Philbrick's beloved Bowditch , a gaff- rigged, two-masted topsail schooner, 82 elegant feet on deck and 108 feet overall. Built of Maine timber in 1922 at East Boothbay, Maine, as a private racing yacht, she competed in the Bermuda races and won in 1927. Later, she was commissioned by the United States Navy as a coastal patrol boat, then saw service as a fishing vessel. Eventually rebuilt for the passenger trade, the Bowditch was purchased by Gib and his wife, Terry, in 1975. Today, the Bowditch's distinguished past belends with the best safety features and modern conveniences. Fully equipped with a powerful radio/telephone for ship-to-shore calling, she also carries radar units, Loran, and GPS. An inboard diesel engine provides power for docking and tight maneuvering. Rigorous annual inspections by the U.S. Coast Guard-and the Philbricks' devoted care-ensure top-notch condition. Life on Board Boarding Info Schedule Request Info ... Home

    Nathaniel Bowditch
Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838), a self-taught astronomer, navigator, and business executive, was one of America's first scientists. His enduring reputation is based on two books; the New American Practical Navigator , a manual for sailors that is still in print; and his definitive translation of French mathematician Pierre Laplace's Méchanique céleste Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Nathaniel was the fourth child of Habakkuk and Mary (Ingersoll) Bowditch. Habakkuk was a cooper and shipmaster. When Nathaniel was two the family moved from the Salem waterfront to rural Salem Village (now Peabody). His early education was at the dame school across the road from home. The family moved back to Salem when he was seven. He attended Master Watson's school where he had his first taste of mathematics. At age 10 Nathaniel went to work beside his father at a cooperage. In the evenings he took a bookkeeping short course. His mother died during the two years he worked as a cooper. In 1785, age 12, Nathaniel was apprenticed to Ropes and Hodges, ship chandlers. Living in the house of Jonathan Hodges, he was allowed to use his master's library. During the day he learned about the equipment and supplies needed to outfit sailing ships and heard stories of exotic ports and people. In the evenings he studied in the library. Salem's sea-going merchants generated wealth which supported scientific development and instrument-making. In these fields Bowditch was encouraged by three local Harvard-trained scholars: Nathan Read, an apothecary, nail factory entrepreneur, and early steam engine and paddlewheel boat inventor; John Prince, the liberal pastor of the First Congregational Church of Salem and the inventor of an air pump; and William Bentley, Unitarian pastor of the Second Congregational Church, whose diaries and journalism recorded his encyclopaedic learning. Bentley encouraged Bowditch to study Latin and, from his 4,000 book library, he lent him books, including Isaac Newton's
