This Week in Astronomy
September 26 - October 2, 2005
(All times are Central Daylight Time) Details about nifty things that can be found in the sky is available at www.spaceweather.com Be sure to keep an eye on Mars as it gets brighter each night! Look towards the south and southeast for it. September 26 September 27 - Time for some birthdays. First there is Benjamin Apthorp Gould , an American astronomer whose star catalogs helped fix the list of constellations of the Southern Hemisphere. He was born in 1824. Next we have Sir Martin Ryle , a British radio astronomer who developed revolutionary radio telescope systems. He was born in 1918. September 28 - Saturn will be only 5 degrees from the Moon at midnight this morning. Today is Ismael Boulliau's birthday. Who's that you say? He was a fellow who proposed that gravity followed a inverse-square law, something that Isaac Newton latched onto when he worked out the law of gravity. Ismael was born in 1605. On this date in 1858 there was a kodak moment - this marks the first time that a comet was photographed, in this case, Comet Donati was snapped, or should I say imaged, and preserved on film.

STAR
STAR and among the earliest civilizations bene- I ficent or malevolent influences were as- Period 50 signed to them (see ASTROLOGY). With iii to to the development of observational astro- days 50~~~ nomy the sidereal universe was arbitrarily Stars 73 8 divided into areas characterized by special ascemblages of stars; these assemblages were named asterisms or constellations, and each received a name suggested by mythological or other figures. The heavenly bodies fall into two classes: (I) the fixed stars, or stars proper, which retain the same relative positioi~ with respect to one another; and (2) the planets, which have motions of a distinctly individual character, and appear to wander among the stars proper. Numerous counts of the number of stars visible to the naked eye have been made; it is doubtful whether more than 2000 can be seen at one time from any position on the earth. When a telescope is employed this number is enormously increased, and still more so with the introduction of photographic methods; with modern appliances more than a hundred million of these objects may be rendered perceptible. From the value of the light-ratio we can construct a table showing the number of stars of each, magnitude which would together give as much light as a first magnitude star, viz.: 1st mag. 2nd mag. 3rd mag. 4th mag. 5th mag. 6th mag.

Christian Huygens:
The Measurement of Time and of Longitude at Sea
Michael S. Mahoney
[Published in Studies on Christiaan Huygens , ed. H.J.M. Bos et al. (Lisse: Swets, 1980), 234-270.]
First at the request of the Directors of the Indies Company I undertook for finding longitudes to construct clocks of which the sure and constant motion would be equal to a three-foot pendulum, and they would not be disturbed by the agitation of the sea. Which task I found to more difficult that I had initially thought, and it is not finished yet; but there is no small hope that it will succeed.
1. Archimedes' Clock
From the very beginning of Christiaan Huygens' career as a mathematician and natural philosopher his father referred to him as "my Archimedes", and friends and admirers soon followed suit. But not blindly: the Republic of Letters in the late seventeenth century chose its classical images carefully. The name of Archimedes conjured up not only the genius that established the mathematical principles of stability in the physical world but also the ingenuity that transformed those principles into machines that put nature to work. Archimedes was an engineer as well as a mathematician. It did not matter that, as Plutarch reported, the real Archimedes had disdained to commit his mechanical inventions to writing. To have recognized the equal importance of works and words was the advantage the moderns enjoyed over the ancients. Yet, elevating mechanics to the rank of learning did not make any less rare those with the special talent (as Pierre Petit put it), "pas permis à tout le monde, de bien penser et de bien faire."
