Marianopolis College Date Published: January 2005 Louis Antoine, Comte de Bougainville Bougainville, Louis Antoine, Comte de (1729-1811), soldier and sailor, was born at Paris on November 11, 1729, the son of a notary. He was educated to become an advocate before the Parlement de Paris ; but he early abandoned law, and turned to mathematics. At the age of twenty-two he published a (Paris, 1751), which brought him in 1756 election to the Royal Society of London. In 1756 he was sent to Canada as aide-de-camp to Montcalm , and he served in Canada during the campaigns of 1756-8. He was wounded at Ticonderoga, and was sent while convalescent to France to secure reinforcements. He returned to Quebec shortly before the arrival of the British fleet in April, 1759; and he played an important part in the defence of Quebec. Though blamed for the failure to reinforce the post at Wolfe's Cove before the battle of the Plains of Abraham , he was undoubtedly one of the most brilliant of Montcalm's officers. He returned to France in 1761, and later entered the naval service of France. Between 1766 and 1769 he made a voyage around the world; during the American Revolution he served in the French navy, and he commanded the advance guard of the French fleet in the action off Chesapeake bay in 1780. He retired from active service in 1790; and, though a royalist, survived the French Revolution, and won the favour of Napoleon. Napoleon granted him a pension, and appointed him a senator, a count of the Empire, and a grand officer of the Legion of Honour. He died in Paris on August 31, 1811. He was the author of

He was a notary, that is a public official who authenticates writings such as deeds and takes affidavits, and depositions. It was not a profession which appealed to his son, Louis-Antoine, who made career decisions to avoid following in his father's footsteps. After completing his secondary schooling Bougainville was influenced by d'Alembert and he wrote in 1752. Otherwise, a fine unrestored copy with the maps in excellent condition FIRST EDITION of Bougainville's account of "the first French expedition to sail around the world" (Cox). "This expedition had considerable repercussions on the history of voyages, not only for its discoveries in the Pacific, but also for having been organized with true scientific precision" (Borba de Moraes). Bougainville was a "chivalrous and intrepid spirit" (Beaglehole, The Exploration of the Pacific , p. 3) who had earlier distinguished himself against the British in the French and Indian War. Bougainville still sought to serve France after the end of the War, so in 1763 "[a]t the age of thirty-four years he embraced a maritime career, and a few years sufficed for him to inscribe his name among the ranks of the most illustrious navigators" (Tr. from Nouvelle Biographie Générale In the heat of 18th century colonial competition, both France and Great Britain saw the Falkland Islands "as the key to the Pacific Ocean; and the French had no desire to see the British hand clasped on that key. Bougainville offered to found a settlement there at his own expense" (Beaglehole, p. 214). However, not only the British but the Spanish claimed the Falklands and, after only three years, Bougainville was ordered to turn the nascent colony over to Spain.

Realizó un viaje exploratorio por el estrecho de Magallanes , tomando datos útiles sobre la ruta y los territorios visitados que son recogidos por el benedictino Dom Perraty en su obra "Histoire d´un voyage aux iles Malouines" y por el mismo Bougainville en su "Voyage autour du monde". Obligado a devolver las Malvinas a la Corona española en 1766 por el gobierno francés, emprende una expedición científica con el objetivo de dar la vuelta al globo, haciéndose acompañar de naturalistas, dibujantes y astrónomos. Así, comienza su periplo en 1766, surcando un año más tarde el estrecho de Magallanes y visitando las islas Pomotú. Este mismo año toma posesión para Francia de Haití, si bien antes lo había realizado Queirós en 1606 y Wallis ocho meses antes. Su viaje le llevó a Samoa y el archipiélago de las Salomón, cuya ubicación había sido ignorada desde su descubrimiento por Mendaña en 1567. Llegó a Nueva Guinea, las Molucas y Java, volviendo a Francia en 1769. Las impresiones y notas de su viaje aparecen publicadas en 1779, siendo además un elemento de apoyo y difusión a la teoría ilustrada acerca del carácter bondadoso del hombre en naturaleza.
