Subject: Nourishing Mukto-mona and Bengali Renaissance Dr. Jaffor Ullah saheb's translations of Meghdoot, with the wonderful pictures of the cloud were really uplifting. It also made me feel about the tremendous possibilities of Mukto-mona; not just a forum for discussing the merits and demerits of RSS and BNP, and the various atrocities - not to say they are not important. Of course the occasional diversions on Ila Mitra Annadashankar Roy and others particularly by Prof. Ajoy Roy were really 'nourishing'. All this gave me an incentive to my piece below. Please forgive me if you find it worthless or boring.

ScienceWeek ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF QUANTUM PHYSICS
After 100 years of development, quantum physics is no longer just a field, it is the bedrock of all of modern physics, and it will be the origin, during the next 100 years, of new knowledge and new applications not yet imaginable.
The following points are made by D. Kleppner and R. Jackiw (Science 2000 289:893):
1) Although quantum mechanics was created to describe an abstract atomic world far removed from daily experience, its impact on our daily lives could hardly be greater. The spectacular advances in chemistry, biology, and medicine and in essentially every other science could not have occurred without the tools that quantum mechanics made possible. Without quantum mechanics there would be no global economy to speak of, because the electronics revolution that brought us the computer age is a child of quantum mechanics. So is the photonics revolution that brought us the Information Age. The creation of quantum physics has transformed the world, bringing with it all the benefits and the risks of a scientific revolution.
3) The unique situation of quantum theory, this crucial yet elusive theory, is perhaps best summarized by the following observation: Quantum theory is the most precisely tested and most successful theory in the history of science. Nevertheless, not only was quantum mechanics deeply disturbing to its founders, today 75 years after the theory was essentially cast in its current form some of the luminaries of science remain dissatisfied with its foundations and its interpretations, even as they acknowledge its stunning power.

    General Description
Let me start by saying that I'm a 5'10" kid with a perpetual grin on my face. I was born and generally brought up in and around The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras India and now live in the lovely city of Glendale, California . I love computers, BMWs , rock n' roll, travelling, hiking, reading , rollerblading and sleeping (though not in that order)! I'm primarily right handed, though I prefer to use my left hand for common tasks such as handling a mouse or dribbling a basketball. I guess that I must be sort of ambidextrous then. My blood group is AB+ which makes me an extremely rare blood type. If you're wondering, my dad's from West Bengal , my mum's from the state of Assam and I grew up in the state of Tamil Nadu . Since each state has its own culture and language, I grew up absorbing all of them. Add to the mixture the facts that I spent a while growing up in the town of

February 2004 Edition Send News to photonics@laurin.com or submit online here Sponsored by: Research into Condensates Continues It has been nearly a decade since the first experiments were reported on Bose-Einstein condensates in ultracold atoms, and research into this and related phenomena continues to be fruitful. As the work advances, scientists worldwide are investigating new material systems, new cooling techniques and potential applications of other varieties of condensates. Figure 1. A team in Austria has demonstrated that fermionic lithium atoms may be induced to form molecular Bose-Einstein condensates. The setup incorporates an Yb:YAG optical trap for evaporative cooling of the sample. Courtesy of Rudolf Grimm. Eighty years ago, Louis de Broglie recognized that, following the laws of quantum mechanics, the wavelength of a particle of matter is inversely proportional to its momentum. Satyendranath Bose and Albert Einstein further speculated that dense groups of particles moving extremely slowly would fall in unison to their lowest energy state. In de Broglie's terms, these Bose-Einstein condensates, or BECs, form when the particles move so slowly that their wavelengths are as large as the distance between them and overlap. Effectively, one wave function may then describe all the particles as if they were a single superparticle.

Le prix dont le montant est de un million d'euros cette année, sera remis aux lauréats comme d'habitude au cours d'une cérémonie le 10 décembre, date anniversaire de la mort d'Alfred Nobel. Feature Tech Bytes: His brain, her brain LARRY CAHIL On a gray day in mid-January, Lawrence Summers, the president of Harvard University, suggested that innate differences in the build of the male and female brain might be one factor underlying the relative scarcity of women in science. His remarks reignited a debate that has been smouldering for a century, ever since some scientists sizing up the brains of both sexes began using their main findingthat female brains tend to be smallerto bolster the view that women are intellectually inferior to men. To date, no one has uncovered any evidence that anatomical disparities might render women incapable of achieving academic distinction in math, physics or engineering. And the brains of men and women have been shown to be quite clearly similar in many ways. Nevertheless, over the past decade investigators have documented an astonishing array of structural, chemical and functional variations in the brains of males and females. These inequities are not just interesting idiosyncrasies that might explain why more men than women enjoy the Three Stooges. They raise the possibility that we might need to develop sex-specific treatments for a host of conditions, including depression, addiction, schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Furthermore, the differences imply that researchers exploring the structure and function of the brain must take into account the sex of their subjects when analyzing their dataand include both women and men in future studies or risk obtaining misleading results.
