Borel, Emile
Born: Jan. 7, 1871, Saint-Affrique, Fr.
Died: Feb. 3, 1956, Paris In full: Borel, Felix-Edouard-Justin-Emile As the creator of the first effective theory of the measure of sets of points, Borel helped launch the modern theory of functions of a real variable. Although he was not the first to define a conventional sum of a divergent series (a series of numbers that does not approach a certain number), he was the first to conceive and develop a systematic theory of such series (1899). In 1909 he was appointed to the chair of theory of functions created for him at the Sorbonne. He completed a series of papers on game theory (1921-27) and became the first to define games of strategy. Borel also served in the French Chamber of Deputies (1924-36) and as minister of the navy (1925-40). After his arrest and brief imprisonment under the Vichy regime in 1940, he returned to his native village and worked in the Resistance. For this work he was awarded the Resistance Medal (1945) to add to his Croix de Guerre (1918) and, later, the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour (1950) and the first gold medal of the National Centre of Scientific Research (1955). : Encyclopaedia Britannica 2000

Dear HMers, here is a short report on the *Colloque Emile Borel* which just
took place (16-17th of July) at Saint-Affrique.
Emile Borel (1871-1956) was born in Saint-Affrique (South of France), a very
small city near Roquefort (this delicious but harsh cheese the Americans
like so much that they are ready to pay it twice the price), surrounded by
semi-desertic countryside (le Larzac), with very impressive Templar castles
and memories from the Crusades.
As detailed in Pierre Guiraldenq's "Emile Borel" (published just a propos,
the author being himself a Saint-Affrican and organiser of the Colloque),
the mathematician was also a prominent politician, in local and national affairs, mayor of Saint-Affrique, deputy and a short time Minister of the French Marine (where he used to answer to whom seemed doubting of the capacity of a mathematician to occupy such a charge: *as a mathematician, I

Chronology of Probabilists and Statisticians Page George Undy Yule George Undy Yule, a student of Pearson, contributed to and expanded upon Pearson’s work on fitting scew curves in 1891 and1896. Yule published a paper on correlation in Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (1897). This paper applied the theory of correlation to problems of social sciences and associated correlation to the method of least squares. In 1900 Yule presented formulas for measuring contingency tables, which proved to be superior to Pearson’s formulas presented at the same time. Yule also did much work on regression and invented time series analysis.> Emile Borel Borel , a French mathematician, is largely noted for his work on the theory of functions of real variables. His work in this topic and measure theory led him to develop the strong law of large numbers William Sealey Gosset While working as a chemist in Guinness brewery in Dublin, Gosset, an English chemist, developed the student’s t-test (1899). This test is used to test hypotheses about m , the mean, for small samples from normal populations. In order to conceal the brewery’s knowledge and application of such a test, Gosset published his findings anonymously under the name of Student.

Argument #15 Conclusion In his book, Nemesis: The Death-Star and Other Theories of Mass Extinction , Donald Goldsmith made the following comments: People who simply demand results may not consider the important distinction between scientists’ perceptions and pseudoscientists’ procedures, but scientists do. By constructing an environment—the world of science—in which theories survive not because they are emotionally satisfying but because they fit into the existing framework more successfully than competing theories, scientists have created the potential for anyone within their purview to make important advances in our collective knowledge. Individuals make the theories; the social structure of science does the testing. If you don’t accept this principle, you don’t belong to the scientific community.
