Bogdanov, Aleksandr A. (1873-1928) A physician by training, Bogdanov was one of the Old Bolsheviks, joining the Bolsheviks in 1903 but expelled in 1909 after leading the ultra-left, boycottist (or ultimatist) tendency. He maintained that the party could only work through illegal organizations (due to the suppression of political parties during this period). After 1911, he drifted from political activism to writing on philosophy, culture, and economics. Served as an Army doctor in WWI. He did not rejoin the Party, but after the October Revolution, he became an organizer and leader of Proletcult . After 1921, he left politics to work in the field of science while remaining a widely respected figure of Old Bolshevism. He died in April 1928 while experimenting with blood transfusions. Bogdanov was an early exponent of Science Fiction and close to Anatoly Lunacharsky and Maxim Gorky. See The Positive Programme of Russian Positivism , a study of his novel Red Star: The First Bolshevik Utopia Empirio-Monism , published in Moscow between 1904 and 1906.

A mathematician will recognize Cauchy, Gauss, Jacobi, or Helmholtz after reading a few pages, just as musicians recognize, from the first few bars, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert.
~ Quoted in A Koestler, The Act of Creation
Born: February 20, 1844 in Vienna, Austria
Died: October 5, 1906 in Duino, Austria (now Italy)
Ludwig Boltzmann's father was a taxation official. Boltzmann was awarded a doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1866 for a thesis on the kinetic theory of gases supervised by Josef Stefan. After obtaining his doctorate, he became an assistant to his teacher Josef Stefan. Boltzmann taught at Graz, moved to Heidelberg and then to Berlin. In these places he studied under Bunsen, Kirchhoff and Helmholtz. In 1869 Boltzmann was appointed to a chair of theoretical physics at Graz. He held this post for four years then, in 1873, he accepted the chair of mathematics at Vienna. He did not stay very long in any place and after three years he was back in Graz, this time in the chair of experimental physics. Boltzmann, at least half jokingly, used to say that the reason he moved around so much was that he was born during the dying hours of a Mardi Gras ball. It was only half joking since he did feel that his nature made him subject to rapid swings between happiness and sadness. His personality certainly had a major impact on the direction that his career took and personal relationships, where he was always very soft-hearted, played a big part. He suffered from an alternation of depressed moods with elevated, expansive or irritable moods. Indeed his physical appearance, being short and stout with curly hair, seemed to fit his personality. His fiancée called him her "sweet fat darling".

Ludwig Boltzmann, pioneer in statistical physics
Boltzmann was the first person to set up a viable theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. To do this, he had to give a much more detailed description of "state". Until then, a state was described by a few parameters, such as V,P or P,T and so on. The non-equilibrium state was then taken to be described by say V(t),P(t) , where t is the time. One might then change the coordinates to P(t), T(t) . But this is useless, since the relation between V, T and P given by the equation of state holds only at equilibrium, and we do not know what relation we are to use if we are not in equilibrium. So the manifold of states (in formulation) has not got two dimensions at each time. In Boltzmann's theory, the state is given by a very large number of variables, and the equation of motion was also given. The macroscopic variables were given by averages of these microvariables. I modelled my book statistical dynamics on this idea, incorporating our present knowledge about the quantum nature of the energy levels, identical particles etc. This leads to a more realistic theory than that based on classical spherical particles, as in Boltzmann's original attempt. Ludwig Boltzmann
Ludwig Boltzmann was born in Austria in 1844. Awarded a doctorate from the University of Vienna, he never stayed in any University post for long. At least half jokingly, he used to say that the reason he moved around so much was that he was born during the dying hours of a Mardi Gras ball. However he also suffered from rapid swings between happiness and sadness which probably also encouraged him to move regularly. His personality certainly had a major impact on the direction that his career took and personal relationships, where he was always very soft-hearted, played a big part. He was short and stout with curly hair and his fiancée called him her "sweet fat darling". Boltzmann worked in an area of physics now called statistical mechanics , using probability to describe how the properties of groups of atoms determine the properties of matter. However Boltzmann's ideas were not accepted by many scientists, particularly the older, more established and well-known figures. Some felt that Boltzmann's work denied that God was at the heart of physics, whilst others simply could not understand his ideas and equations. One of Boltzmann's biggest opponents was Wilhelm Ostwald, a physical chemist who had once been a close colleague. The events of one meeting they attended in 1895 was described by a fellow scientist as follows :

Ludwig Boltzmann
born Feb. 20, 1844, Vienna, Austria

Austrian physicist. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Vienna and thereafter taught at several German and Austrian universities. He was one of the first European scientists to recognize the importance of James Clerk Maxwell 's electromagnetic theory. He explained the second law of thermodynamics by applying the laws of mechanics and the theory of probability to the motions of atoms, and he is remembered as the developer of statistical mechanics . His work was widely attacked and misunderstood; subject to depression after 1900, he eventually committed suicide. Shortly after his death, his conclusions were finally supported by discoveries in atomic physics and by recognition that phenomena such as Brownian motion could be explained only by statistical mechanics.

LUDWIG BOLTZMANN INSTITUTE FOR URBAN ETHOLGY Our goals
The original scientific orientation of the LBIUE focuses on the study of human behavior in large cities and the effects of urban environments on human behavior. In the first years after the foundation of this institute, we mainly focused on the assessment of human behavior in large apartment houses and in public spaces. We were able to show that humans tend to experience built environments exactly like natural environments, and if the built environment is supposed to be positively experienced, it has to be constructed according to biologically determined rules.
News What fingers can tell about faces... This new study shows that human face form may be already determined during early gestation by prenatal hormones. The mothers hormonal state thus might determine looks.
Sex-typical 2D4D relationship (female left, male right). In males the fourth digit is longer than the second. A relation presumably determined by prenatal hormone environment. all rights reserved karl.grammer@univie.ac.at
