Bohr nació en Copenhague el 7 de octubre de 1885; era hijo de un profesor de fisiología y estudió en la universidad de su ciudad natal, donde alcanzó el doctorado en 1911. Ese mismo año fue a la Universidad de Cambridge (Inglaterra) para estudiar física nuclear con J.J. Thomson , pero pronto se trasladó a la Universidad de Manchester para trabajar con Ernest Rutherford La teoría de la estructura atómica de Bohr, que le valió el Premio Nobel de Física en 1922, se publicó en una memoria entre 1913 y 1915. Bohr, Niels Henrik David (Copenaghen 1885-1962), fisico danese. Figlio di un professore di fisiologia, studiò all'Università di Copenaghen, dove si laureò nel 1911. Si recò poi all'Università di Cambridge per studiare fisica nucleare sotto la guida di Joseph John Thomson, ma ben presto si trasferì a Manchester dove iniziò a collaborare con Ernest Rutherford. La teoria della struttura atomica di Bohr, per la quale fu insignito del premio Nobel per la fisica nel 1922, venne formulata in tre memorie pubblicate tra il 1913 e il 1915. I suoi studi erano basati sul modello atomico di Rutherford, secondo il quale l'atomo è costituito da un nucleo compatto circondato da elettroni, molto più leggeri. Il modello proposto da Bohr prevede che gli elettroni siano disposti intorno al nucleo su orbite stabili, corrispondenti a livelli energetici ben definiti, e che l'emissione o l'assorbimento di radiazione elettromagnetica si verifichi a seguito di transizioni elettroniche tra livelli quantici diversi.
