About Visionlearning Happy Birthday, Mr. Bohr!
Niels Henrik David Bohr was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 7, 1885 to Christian Bohr, a professor of physiology at Copenhagen University, and Ellen Bohr, also known as Adler. Niels was the middle of three children, his older sister Jenny was born in 1883, and his younger brother Harald would eventually become a professor of mathematics. Their father, Christian, was a well-known physiologist and was largely responsible for awakening an interest in physics and math in his children.
Harald Bohr In October 1891, Niels entered the Grammelholms School. He did well in school but was not outstanding, usually coming third or fourth in a class of about 20 students. The subject he excelled at was, surprisingly, physical education. He was an excellent soccer player, but not as good as his brother Harald who won a silver medal playing soccer for Denmark.
In 1903, Bohr entered Copenhagen University, and graduated in 1911 with his doctorate. He went on to study at Cambridge under the eminent physicist J.J. Thompson, and later to Manchester University to study with Ernest Rutherford. Rutherford was much more receptive to Bohr's new ideas and the two of them formed a very close personal and working relationship that resulted in Bohr producing his theory of the hydrogen atom in 1913 at the age of 27.

Promises, promises I'm actually out of ideas at the moment. So I thought I'd just post about what I'm thinking of writing at some point. I was just telling Lynn that I should try to write one essay per week, in the style of my essay on anti-Semitism, only without as many links, what with all those links putting, like, an extra few days into the effort. But an essay a week seems like an achievable goal. If you have a topic suggestion, I've got comments. However, I have decided (per the post below) that I am never joining another weblogger award contest, ever—unless there is a money prize involved, and a juried election process. I think we can safely put that in the "Never. Gonna. Happen." category. Why? Because it's not really as much fun as the organizers always want it to be. People say nasty things, or they are interpreted as saying nasty things (are people really questioning whether or not some bloggers are Jewish? Like we need that Subjects to write about: The High Ropes Challenge and the Leap of Faith at the climbing gym last week. An essay on how Israel's critics want it both ways regarding anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism. An essay on Jews who hate Jews. (That one is going to be a long time coming; it's not just sensitive, it needs to be written just right.) A post to

NIELS BOHR
The first third of the 20th century witnessed a revolutionary development in the field of physics. The atom, which had since antiquity been regarded as the smallest particle of mat-ter in the universe, turned out itself to be a universe. This made it necessary to reject old concepts and ideas and a whole new world with tremendous possibilities and abysmal risks opened up.
This took place in an intense interaction between scientists from many countries, partly in the form of direct co-operation, partly through mutual inspiration. During certain periods the new discoveries and the progress came from all parts of the world at such an overwhelming pace that the world picture was enlarged and amplified almost from day to day. For a number of years professor Niels Bohr at the University of Copenhagen was the central figure in the international work on the development of nuclear physics and his modest Institute for Theoretical Physics became the most important meeting place and place of learning for the world's young nuclear physicists. It has left permanent marks in the scientif-ic nomenclature. For instance, the element which has number 72 and which was long unknown was called Hafnium because it was discovered at Niels Bohr's institute and named after the Latin form of Copenhagen, Hafnia.

Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. Harald Bohr byl mladší bratr Nielse Bohra . Jejich otec, Christian Bohr, byl profesor fyziologie na univerzitì Kodanì. Christian Bohr byl slavný jeho prací na fyzických a chemických aspektech dýchání. Harald a Niels Bohr ' s matka, Ellen Adlerová Bohr, pøišel z bohaté židovské rodiny s rodinnými pøíslušníky kdo byl dùležitý v bankovnictví a v politice v Dánsku. Aèkoli on nikdy docela získal slávu jeho bratra Niels (kromì jako fotbalista!), on dìlal produkci nìjakou matematiku úplnì nejvyšší dùležitosti. To možná pøekvapí to Harald a Niels nespolupracoval více èasto. Oni jen publikovali jeden spojený referát.

Many friends remarked that the two men were unusually close, even for brothers. Early in the lives of the brothers, Harald was thought to be more likely to be successful. Harald Bohr worked in mathematical analysis , founding the field of almost periodic functions , and worked with the Cambridge mathematician G. H. Hardy . Bohr was also an excellent soccer player; he won an silver medal at the 1908 Summer Olympics with the Danish national football team
