  • 84. Death Of Gilbert Cortlandt
Til safe within the destin d port of bliss, Each sail is furl d, GilbertCortlandt was Henry s first cousin, the son of his aunt Joanna and New York
    http://www.iment.com/maida/familytree/henry/writing/poetry/gilbertcortlandt.htm
For the Poughkeepsie Advertiser. On the late Mr. Gilbert Cortlandt, deceased BEYOND where billows roll or tempests vex
Is gone! the best, and loveliest of his sex!
His brittle bark on life's wild ocean tost,
In the unequal conflict soon was lost. Tho' short its struggle, much alas it bore,
Then sank beneath the storm, and rose no more.
But when the Arch-angels awful trump shall sound
And thunder, LIFE, thro' all the vast profound,
    The renovated vessel will be seen;
Transcendant floating on the silver stream!
Its joyful Ensigns waving in the air,
The tides propitious, and the zephyrs fair! 'Til safe within the destin'd port of bliss, Each sail is furl'd, and all around is peace. R Background
Gilbert Cortlandt was Henry's first cousin, the son of his aunt Joanna and New York Lieutenant Governor Pierre Van Cortlandt. Gilbert Cortlandt, nine years younger than Henry, was born 6 April 1757, and died at age twenty-nine. Gilbert's brother Philip, later General Philip Van Cortlandt, was the one for whom Henry waited while composing a poem to his baby daughter.

The MAA Online book review column
    R.L. Moore:
    by John Parker
    Reviewed by David E. Zitarelli
This excellent book should be read by the two audiences in the title: those interested in teaching mathematics and those interested in mathematicians who developed certain parts of mathematics in America during roughly 1890-1960. Indeed, anyone interested in the role of mathematics within American society during this period will also enjoy the biography and benefit from reading it. The book certainly would make a perfect gift or award for high-school or college students. The protagonist, R. L. Moore (1882-1974), is known today for his method of teaching and for his contributions to mathematics, mostly topology. This well-researched biography, which is mostly drawn from written archival records and taped interviews with several important characters, does not paint Moore in a lily white setting. Instead, warts and endearing characteristics are portrayed equally in what amounts to a very fair portrait of a very fascinating figure. We examine the biography through the eyes of someone referred to only as "Mr. W" in the MAA film about the Moore Method titled Challenge in the Classroom not a spectator sport. We know that students must become actively engaged with the subject in order to learn it. But how do we achieve this goal? The Moore Method is one way, and this book provides an excellent account of the method, not in just one small snippet, but by tracing Moore's development of the method during his sixty-four years of experience as a teacher. Yet the Moore Method is not appropriate for all teachers. Indeed, the biggest part of its original success probably was due to Moore himself, whose inordinate patience and insight into posing the right question at the right time liken him to a modern-day Socrates.

    Visible Structures in Number Theory
by Peter Borwein and Loki Jorgenson
    pborwein@cecm.sfu.ca

Until very recently, mathematical pictures consisted almost entirely of black and white graphs in two or three dimensions. There is the potential, in modern computational environments, to completely change this. A visualization is most interesting when it reveals new and unexpected structure; when it makes complicated phenomena transparent; or when it suggests the right method of proof. This paper, primarily through examples of phenomena chosen from some fairly elementary problems in number theory, aims to support these claims.
How to Differentiate and Integrate Sequences
    by Donald R. Chalice
    chalice@cc.wwu.edu

The main purpose of this article is to show how to use one’s calculus/differential equations intuition to solve certain discrete differential equations. We do this by first developing “discrete calculus” and along the way, we easily obtain closed formulas for sums such as k+k2+•••+km, and discrete analogues of Taylor’s formula and the Chain Rule (involving moving averages). Discrete “integrating factors” allow us to express the solutions of certain discrete differential equations naturally as convolutions. We can interpret these solutions as the convolution of the “impulse response” with the “driving sequence”. This has an analog in differential equations: The driven harmonic oscillator whose solution is the convolution of the “impulse response” with the driver. Our main point is to show how to use discrete calculus to solve certain discrete differential equations, whose solutions are usually found by guessing and induction.

Lillian Bennett Bliss, 84, retired nurse with deep roots in Ridgefield Lillian Sarah Bennett Bliss, a nurse and longtime Ridgefielder whose ancestors were among the early settlers of the town, died Friday, Jan. 12, at Ashlar of Newtown. She was 84 years old and had lived at 3 Derby Court, Brookfield.
Although Mrs. Bliss had been born on an estate in North Salem, N.Y., her father was a native Ridgefielder whose roots here went back to the 18th Century. She, her sister Dorothy Carboni and her brother Harry Bennett were well-known Ridgefielders.
Mrs. Bliss was born on Feb. 7, 1916, a daughter of Harry R. and Anna Karlson Bennett, and moved to Ridgefield while still a child. When she was only two, her father died in the 1918 flu epidemic, and her mother raised the family, earning income by operating a laundry business.
The family moved to Gilbert Street in 1922. Mrs. Bliss attended Ridgefield schools and graduated from Ridgefield High School in 1934.
A registered nurse for 47 years, Mrs. Bliss attended Norwalk Hospital School of Nursing, and served as an operating room nurse at the hospital for some years. She then spent many years as a private duty nurse in the area and finally was a nurse for Dr. Martin Prince at his offices in Ridgefield and Danbury for 20 years.
She and Charles R. Bliss of Stamford were married around 1939 and lived on Wilton Road West. For a year in 1953, they lived in Japan where Mr. Bliss was stationed with the U.S. Army. They were divorced in 1964 and Mrs. Bliss later lived on Greenfield Avenue.
