wilhelm blaschke in the 1930s posed the problem of finding linearizabilityconditions for a dweb. He claimed that it is hopeless to find such conditions.

Solution of Blaschke's Problem on the Linearization of Planar Webs
Abstract for the Colloquium
2005 April 7
A d-web W in the plane consists of d one-parameter families of curves such that at any point A, the tangents to the d curves passing through A are in general position. A d-web is called linear if it is formed by d families of straight lines. It is called linearizable For 3-webs, linearizability is equivalent to the existence of real, smooth solutions of a system of five algebraic equations of degrees not exceeding 16, 18, 18, 24, and 24. A 3-web is linearizable if and only if 1040 invariants of order not exceeding 9 (of which 18 are of order 8) vanish. If a 4-web W(4,2) is given by web functions z = f(x,y) and u = g(x,y), then its linearizability conditions are two PDEs of fourth order with respect to f(x,y) and g(x,y). Each of the PDEs contains 266 terms; they were obtained using the Mathematica package. Another form of the linearizability conditions is in terms of the curvature, K, and the basic invariant, a, of W(4,2). The linearizability conditions are two equations expressing the covariant derivatives K and K of K in terms of K, a, and covariant derivatives of a up to the third order.

Chain Geometry
Project Aim The aim of the project is to investigate various aspects of chain geometry , in particular the (generalized) chain geometries arising from the projective line P R ) over a ring R containing a field F which is not necessarily commutative. The chains are the F -sublines of P R
The term chain goes back to K ARL G. C. VON S TAUDT The Classical Example
Here R is the field of complex numbers and F is the field of reals. The corresponding chain geometry is an algebraic model for the , i.e., the Euclidean plane with one extra "point at infinity". The -chains correspond exactly to the circles and lines of the plane (with the extra assignment that all lines contain the point at infinity).
Another model for the projective line P ) is a sphere in Euclidean 3-space; the -chains appear exactly as the circles on the sphere.
The link between these two geometric models is the stereographic projection from the "north pole" N : Each point of the sphere (other than N ) is projected to a plane which is parallel to the plane of the "equator". The point N , however, is mapped to the point at infinity.

In Memoriam: Shiing-Shen Chern, 1911-2004
By Thomas F. Banchoff One of the great ones is gone. Professor Shiing-Shen Chern, one of the outstanding mathematicians of the twentieth century, died at age 93 in Tianjin, China, on December 3, 2004 at the Nankai Institute that he helped to found on the campus of Tianjin University where he received his undergraduate degree in 1930. He received the National Medal of Science in 1975 and the Wolf Prize in 1983/4. He edited a volume on Global Geometry and Analysis in the MAA Studies in Mathematics Series in 1967; his article “Curves and Surfaces in Euclidean Space,” in that volume, was awarded the Chauvenet Prize in 1970. He was a member of the MAA for 55 years. Prof. Chern earned his Ph.D. in 1936 in Hamburg with Wilhelm Blaschke. He spent a post-doctoral year with Elie Cartan in Paris, and returned to teach in China. He visited the Institute for Advanced Study in 1943-5, and returned to the US in 1949 for another short stay at the IAS. He taught at the University of Chicago until 1960 when he came to the University of California, Berkeley, until he retired in 1979. He directed 47 Ph.D. theses, and, by latest count, had 467 mathematical descendants. In his “retirement”, he spent his efforts in two research institutes that he helped to found. He served as the first director of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley from 1981 to 1984. In 1985, he was one the chief founders of the Nankai Institute in Tianjin, China, for which he served as honorary director until his death. The MSRI produced an excellent tribute to him in 1998; see

In the 1930s and '40s, Chern took the then-dormant field of differential geometry, which dealt with the mathematical description of geometric figures, and turned it into a vibrant area of study delving into the geometry of many dimensions and merging ultimately with the study of algebraic geometry and topology. Today, the fields on which he had the greatest impact global differential geometry and complex algebraic geometry are fundamental to many areas of mathematics and theoretical physics.
"The work he did is at the very foundation of one of the most important developments of modern theoretical physics gauge theory," said friend and colleague Hung-Hsi Wu, professor of mathematics at UC Berkeley. "With Chern classes and the Chern-Simons invariants, Chern is a household name in theoretical physics, especially in string theory."
