Vilhelm Bjerknes was a son of Carl Bjerknes and Aletta Koren, whose father was a minister in the Church in West Norway. See the biography of Carl Bjerknes for more details of his family background. Carl, Vilhelm's father, was not a good experimentalist and so while he was a young boy Vilhelm did much work assisting his father in carrying out experiments to verify the theoretical predictions which came out of his father's hydrodynamic research. Vilhelm began this work with his father when he was still quite a young boy and he continued the collaboration after he began his undergraduate studies at the University of Kristiania in 1880. Vilhelm wrote his first paper New hydrodynamic investigations in 1882 when he was only 20 years old. We should note that the different spelling of Christiania or Kristiania is not an error. The city was named Christiania when Vilhelm was born there, became Kristiania in 1877, then was renamed Oslo in 1925. Throughout Vilhelm Bjerknes's life he was associated with this city with its three different names and all three names appear in this biography.

Carl Bjerknes In 1844 Bjerknes entered the University of Christiania (now Oslo), where he studied mining. He was awarded a degree in mining engineering in 1848 and for the next four years he worked at the Kongsberg silver mines. Silver was mined at Kongsberg, in southeastern Norway, from the early 17 th century until the mid-20 th century. The oldest school of mines in the world, founded 1757, was in the town and Bjerknes worked there from 1848 until 1852. ... foreign scientific travels were indispensable for anyone in our restricted situation who wishes to develop into a man of science. Dirichlet
In 1859, after returning from his foreign travels, Bjerknes had married Aletta Koren whose father was a minister in the Church in West Norway. Their son Vilhelm Bjerknes was born in 1862 and he played an important role in his father's work both as an assistant to his father when he was young, then later writing up his father's hydrodynamical work for publication. They had two other sons, Carl who became a sailor and died in a tropical cyclone, and Ernst who became an engineer. Perhaps it is worth mentioning just how talented a family Carl and Aletta Bjerknes had. In particular one of their grandsons Jacob Bjerknes

Bjerknes, Vilhelm Firman Koren
Norwegian scientist whose theory of polar fronts formed the basis of all modern weather forecasting and meteorological studies. He also developed hydrodynamic models of the oceans and the atmosphere and showed how weather prediction could be carried out on a statistical basis, dependent on the use of mathematical models.
Bjerknes was professor at Stockholm, Sweden, and Leipzig, Germany, before returning to Norway and founding the Bergen Geophysical Institute 1917.
During World War I, Bjerknes instituted a network of weather stations throughout Norway; coordination of the findings from such stations led him and his co-workers to the theory of polar fronts, based on the discovery that the atmosphere is made up of discrete air masses displaying dissimilar features.
He coined the word 'front' to denote the boundary between such air masses.

Bjerknes, Vilhelm Friman Koren
Born: March 14, 1862, Christiania, Nor.
Died: April 9, 1951, Oslo Norwegian meteorologist and physicist, one of the founders of the modern science of weather forecasting. As a youth Bjerknes assisted his father, a professor of mathematics at Christiania, with research in hydrodynamics. In 1890 he went to Germany and became an assistant to and scientific collaborator with the German physicist Heinrich Hertz. Bjerknes made a comprehensive study of electrical resonance that was decisive in the development of radio. In 1907 Bjerknes returned to Norway and accepted a professorship at the university in Kristiania (so spelled from 1877 to 1925). Five years later he became professor of geophysics at the University of Leipzig, where he organized and directed the Leipzig Geophysical Institute. In 1917 he accepted a position with the museum in Bergen (now a part of Universitetet I Bergen), Norway, and there founded the Bergen Geophysical Institute. His most productive years were spent at Bergen; there he wrote On the Dynamics of the Circular Vortex with Applications to the Atmosphere and to Atmospheric Vortex and Wave Motion (1921). Now a classic, this work clearly details the most important aspects of his research. In 1926 he obtained a position with the university in Oslo, where he continued his studies until his retirement in 1932.

Pioneers in modern meteorology and climate research
Born on the 14th March, 1862 in Oslo (Christiania), Vilhelm Frimann Koren Bjerknes Geophysical Institute in Bergen (1917-1926), he laid the foundations of the Bergen School of Meteorology . Bjerknes established a network of weather observations in Norway that collected data that would be of great importance in their later work. Together with his son Jacob Further, Vilhelm and Jacob Bjerknes conducted several studies of the ocean circulation, air-sea exchange, and climate variability that laid the basis for modern research on climate change and the role of the ocean in the climate system. Jacob Bjerknes carried out pioneer studies on the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), by describing its major features and how it influences the currents and temperature conditions in the North Atlantic. Nowadays the vision provided by the Bjerknes family has been taken further by simulating climate variability in models that couple the atmosphere, land, and oceans, in an attempt to estimate the response of the climate system to driving forces. The Centre is thus named as a tribute to their efforts.

Name: Vilhelm Bjerknes Birth Date: March 14, 1862 Death Date: April 9, 1951 Place of Birth: Kristiania, Norway Place of Death: Oslo, Norway Nationality: Norwegian Gender: Male Occupations: meteorologist, geophysicist, physicist Vilhelm Bjerknes Main Biography Vilhelm Bjerknes (1862-1951), a pioneer of modern meteorology, was especially known for his studies in hydrodynamics and thermodynamics and their relation to atmospheric motion. Following the steps of his father and even improving on his work, he devised a program of weather analysis and forecasting and founded the Geophysical Institute and Weather Service of Bergen. Vilhelm Bjerknes was born on March 14, 1862, to Carl Anton Bjerknes, a respected mathematician and physicist, and Aletta Koren, a minister's daughter, in Kristiania (later renamed Oslo), Norway. Bjerknes' father was a devoted researcher of hydrodynamics. He had been a respected teacher of physics, but turned his focus towards the study of fluid-related movement, and also researched comparable studies in electro-dynamic phenomena. The younger Bjerknes was equally devoted to his father, and started working alongside him early in his scientific career. Although he assisted his father in his research, it was not long befo.....
