Garrett Birkhoff 's father was G D Birkhoff who also has a biography in this archive. Garrett was educated at home until he was eight years old when he began to attend school. This first school was a public grammar school (public school here is the American meaning so is the opposite of a private school) which he attended for three years then, rather than enter high school at this young age, he spent a year enjoying himself playing sports and maturing before entering Browne and Nichols school at the age of twelve. Unlike his first school, Browne and Nichols was a private school. At Browne and Nichols high school he had an excellent mathematics teacher in Harry Gaylord who had written a textbook with . Again, as at his primary school, Garrett progressed very rapidly and despite going to Europe with his parents during his third year of study he was still ready to take the examinations a year early. His parents had encouraged him to do this because they were going on a major year long tour and so, after passing the examinations, Garrett attended a boarding school at Lake Placid for a year, spending much time on sport, before he entered Harvard University in 1928. Before he entered Harvard, Birkhoff's father pressed him to decide on what profession he would eventually follow. That was when [2]:-

Overisel, Mich.; father of Garrett Birkhoff. The son of a physician, he was educated at Harvard (B.A., 1905) and the Univ. of Chicago (Ph.D., 1907) After teaching shortly at Chicago and Princeton, he joined the faculty at Harvard (1912) where he taught until his death. Birkhoff, perhaps the first American mathematician of international repute, is known for his work on linear differential equations and difference equations. He was also deeply interested in and made contributions to the analysis of dynamical systems, celestial mechanics, the four-color map problem, and function spaces. In addition he wrote on the foundations of relativity and quantum mechanics and on art and music, e.g., Aesthetic Measure Bibliography See his Collected Mathematical Papers (3 vol., 1950).

Abby S. Arnold is a Senior Mediator and Director of Business Development at RESOLVE, Inc. and has been a practicing mediator and trainer in conflict resolution for twelve years specializing in environment, natural resources, energy and other public policy issues. Ms. Arnold has mediated policy dialogues and regulatory negotiations under the Federal Advisory Committee Act for a variety of federal agencies and private parties on a range of topics: energy resources, marine mammals, commercial fisheries, non-point source waters, water quality, and health risk. Ms. Arnold has facilitated long term processes on hazardous waste, marine and coastal resources, toxic substances, and others. Ms. Arnold's specific interest is the design of processes that successfully integrate research and science into decision processes. Ms. Arnold has managed a model multi-party collaborative, the National Wind Coordinating Committee, made up of 200 active parties interested in developing wind energy for production of electricity. Ms. Arnold has provided this wind collaborative with mediation, facilitation, strategic advice, and management expertise. She has authored articles on application of dispute resolution in natural resource issues. She earned a B.A. in Environmental Planning and Politics, with Honors at University of California Santa Cruz, and a Masters in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Ms. Arnold was raised in California and spent ten years in Alaska working on land use and coastal management issues.

The George David Birkhoff Prize
in Applied Mathematics
This prize was established in 1967 in honor of Professor George David Birkhoff . The initial endowment of $2,066 was contributed by the Birkhoff family and there have been subsequent additions by others. It is normally awarded every five years, beginning in 1968, for an outstanding contribution to ``applied mathematics in the highest and broadest sense.'' The award is made jointly by the American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics . The recipient must be a member of one of these societies and a resident of the United States, Canada, or Mexico.
Sixth Award, 1978, to Clifford A. Truesdell
The sixth award was given in 1978 to Clifford A. Truesdell for his outstanding contributions to our understanding of the subjects of rational mechanics and nonlinear materials, for his efforts to give precise mathematical formulation to these classical subjects, for his many contributions to applied mathematics in the fields of acoustic theory, kinetic theory, and nonlinear elastic theory, and the thermodynamics of mixtures, and for his major work in the history of mechanics.
