Estudió en la escuela politécnica de París y fue profesor de la universidad de Beauvais y del colegio de Francia. En 1804 junto con Gay Lussac realizó la primera ascensión en globo para medir la composición de la alta atmósfera y el valor del campo magnético terrestre. En 1803 alcanzó su primer éxito en astronomía cuando demostró el origen extraterrestre de los meteoritos. En óptica estudio la rarefacción de los gases y demostró que ciertas disoluciones de sustancias orgánicas hacen girar el plano de polarización de la luz y que además el ángulo de difracción depende de la concentración del gas por lo que se hace posible estudiarla sin ninguna manipulación. También estudio electromagnetismo descubriendo la ley que lleva su nombre y el de Savart que afirma que la intensidad del campo magnético generado por una corriente eléctrica rectilínea en un punto situado fuera de ella es directamente proporcional a la intensidad de la corriente e inversamente proporcional a la distancia desde el punto hasta el conductor. Su obra mas conocida fue Tratado elemental de Astronomía Física publicada en en 1805.

Z Jean Baptiste Biot Biography Jean Baptiste Biot (April 21, 1774, Paris – February 3, 1862, Paris) was a French physicist and mathematician who in the early 1800s studied the relationship between electrical current and magnetism (see Biot-Savart's Law), as well as the polarisation of light passing through chemical solutions. He was the first person to discover the unique optical properties of mica, and therefore the mica-based mineral biotite was named after him. In 1804 he made a hot-air balloon ascent with Joseph Gay-Lussac to a height of five kilometres in an early investigation of the Earth's atmosphere. V roce 1797 se stal Jean Baptiste Biot profesorem matematiky na Ecole Centrale v Beauvais a roku 1800 profesorem matematické fyziky na v Paøíži. Roku 1803 byl Biot pøijat za èlena Akademie vìd. V roce 1809 byl jmenován profesorem fyzikální astronomie na fakultì spoleèenských vìd. Biotovy zákony zákony vztahující se k rotaèní polarizaci: Stoèení je úmìrné tloušce prošlé vrstvy. Biot's first interest in aeronautical matters was designing and flying kites. His kites were sometimes quite large, so much so that in 1868 he was able to go aloft suspended beneath one of his creations. The stability of his early kites was such that in 1880 or 1881 he designed, with Dandrieux, a large human-carrying aeroplane based upon them. Nothing came of that project. In 1880 Biot experimented with a tailless kite which was considered remarkably stable. His tailless kite consisted of two cones attached to a flat surface so that the wind would enter the base of the cone and exit through a hole in the top of the cone. Biot demonstrated his kite to the French Society for Aerial Navigation in July of 1880. The Jobert kite of 1887 (below) was based on Biot's kite, of which no illustration has yet been found. In 1887 Biot built and attempted to fly a glider with moveable wingtip "fingers" with the support of Massia. That glider is on display at the Musee de L'Air. The Jobert Kite - 1887 Home
