Sommersemester 2003 Deutsche Mathematik Nationalsozialismus und Mathematik Die DMV in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus Was ist die DMV? Der Annalenstreit - DMV gegen Ende der Weimarer Republik ... Quellen 1.

Helmut Grunsky. Collected Papers
Edited by Oliver Roth and Stephan Ruscheweyh
530 pages, hard cover, ISBN 3-88538-501-5, EUR 45.00, 2004
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Helmut Grunsky's birthday the Mathematics Department of Wuerzburg University honours this great mathematician with the present edition of his Collected Papers.
The book contains a tabular curriculum vitae of Helmut Grunsky, a list of his publications and all publications in full text.
In a paper of 14 pages Christian Pommerenke describes Grunsky's work and influence in function theory from the mathematical point of view.
The 20 pages contribution of Reinhard Siegmund-Schultze , entitled "Helmut Grunsky (19041986) in the Third Reich: A Mathematician Torn between Conformity and Dissent", is one of the rare documents showing the difficult life of many mathematicians in the years of the Third Reich on the example of Helmut Grunsky. The contribution closes with the facsimile of a letter of Ludwig Bieberbach to Helmut Grunsky, giving a shocking insight into these dark years of recent German history.

abstracts
Hermann Strebel Lichttherapeut und Sonnenforscher [Hermann Strebel light therapist and sun observer]; in: Sterne und Weltraum , 31. Jg., Heft 3, 1992, S. 154-157. Hermann Strebel (1868-1943) was born in Munich where, after receiving his doctorate in medicine from Erlangen University in 1892 and for some years working in Regensburg, he practiced as a physician specializing in the then new field of light therapy, also holding some patents in that field. Presumably because of this specialization he also became interested in solar research, so in 1926 he began building an observatory in Herrsching near Munich. Unusually for the time, he used mirror telescopes, built by the famous B. Schmidt, for his solar observations. His best observations, resulting for example in the recognition of the polygonal structure of solar granules, were of an equal quality with the stratospheric observations made in the 1960s.
However, Strebel also produced quite a weird theory of the sun's structure, ignoring the results of concurrent academic research. In 1932 Strebel bequeathed his observatory to the Munich-Bogenhausen observatory which was then still part of the Administration of Scientific Collections of the (Bavarian) State . In 1937 he stopped observing, and most of the instruments were brought to Bogenhausen where not much use was made of them, however. His publications of observations in the 1930s provoked renewed interest in solar granulation eg, by H. H. Plaskett , but then soon became forgotten. Yet, he was one of the most successful astronomical practitioners in Bavaria between the World Wars.

Current Events, Smarter Investing and Fatherhood Main July 12, 2002 Boycotting Israel The proposed economic and academic boycotts against Israel bring to mind these images from the 1930s:
"Germans, defend yourselves! Don't buy from Jews!"
and this shot of Nazis holding hands at the University of Vienna to "protect" it from Jews. and read this story of an otherwise talented mathematician, Ludwig Bieberbach, who became a Nazi and took increasing measures to eradicate Jewish mathematicians from German academia, because it was the fashionable thing to do. In 1938 he wrote Above all, may you finally dismiss the Jews from your staff in the New Year. ... I emphasise again that your staff of referees must be in accordance with the regulations which have been obligatory to all Germans since 30 January 1933. ... You see how your conduct harms the good reputation of the Academy. Now read this petition which calls on boycotting ties with Israeli academics. The Nazi boycott of Jewish academics in the 1930s, and today's proposed boycott of Israeli academics by Islamic totalitarians and their hallucinating western apologists, are more alike than different. information service Description:
The Goettingen SUB has a holding of about 350 literary remains, i.e., the papers left after a scholar's death. A special emphasis in the Goettingen collection is mathematics and the natural sciences. Care and development of the remains has from inception been emphasized, so that the users' interests are clearly focused on the newer manuscripts and remains here. The collecting, completing, and indexing of the scholars' literary remains are the responsibility of the Manuscripts and Rare Prints Department, which is located in the historical library building. A marked growth in the mathematical remains has taken place since the beginning of the 1990s, after the library set as a goal the collecting and indexing of this material upon making a contract for such with the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung (the German National Mathematical Society). Some of the partial remains that the library has collected since 1992 include those of Ernst Steinitz, Ludwig Bieberbach, Wilhelm Maier, Carl Ludwig Siegel, and Ludwig Kiepert. In addition, with the support of the DFG, the extensive scholarly remains of Hans Zassenhaus were obtained from the U.S. The cataloging of the mathematical remains has been financially supported by the Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Goettingen since 1992. The cataloging software used since 1997 is HANS (

The Chauvenet Prize, consisting of a prize of $1,000 and a certificate is awarded at the Annual Meeting of the Association to the author of an outstanding expository article on a mathematical topic by a member of the Association. First awarded in 1925, the Prize is named for William Chauvenet, a professor of mathematics at the United States Naval Academy. It was established through a gift in 1925 from J.L. Coolidge, then MAA President. Winners of the Chauvenet Prize are among the most distinguished of mathematical expositors.
