Porträt: Ludwig Bieberbach Bieberbach studierte in Heidelberg und Göttingen. Seine Forschungsgebiete waren im wesentlichen die Analysis und die Funktionentheorie. Zuächst wurde er von Felix Klein über automorphe Funktionen angeregt - woraus auch seine Dissertation entstanden ist. Bieberbach zeigt eine erstaunliche Vielseitigkeit. Er arbeitet an Problemen der Funktionentheorie, auf dem Problemkreis der Raumgruppen, Problemen der algebraischen Geometrie, der Topologie, der Differentialgeometrie, der Elementargeometrie und der angewandten Mathematik. Besonders hervorzuheben ist aber auch der Anstoß von Hilbert, das Problem Nr. 18 seines Pariser Vortrages aus dem Jahre 1900 aufzugreifen - das ergab seine Habilitationsschrift. Danach wendet sich Bieberbach vorwiegend der Funktionentheorie zu. Die stärkste Wirksamkeit, weit hinausgehend über seine Vorlesungstätigkeit, hat Bieberbach als Buchautor gefunden. Die Lebendigkeit der Darstellung läßt den Leser an der Entwicklung der Gedankengänge teilhaben. Details about the content of some of the folders General, short description of the collection A short description: This collection of Jakob Nielsen papers consists mainly of reprints, which Nielsen has received from other scientists and sorted by authors. In addition to the reprints there is other material from some of the persons, i.e. letters, manuscripts, applications for positions etc. All the material is from the period around 1890-1959 and the reprints are in many different languages. However, the additional material is mainly in Danish or German. Size: The collection is contained in 79 archival boxes of which the first 25 are standard boxes while the rest are Nielsen's original boxes. Handed over: The collection was located in the basement of the mathematical library in the E block of the H. C. Ørsted Institute in the fall of 1996. It is not known when and how it was put here. Photocopies of material from the Staatsarchiv Hamburg was added to box 10 in July 1999.

Mathematics Pronunciation Guide A Megametamathematical Guide, for the Diacritally Challenged, of the Proper American English Pronunciation of Terms and Names This guide includes most mathematicians and mathematical terms that may been encountered in high school and the first two years of college. Proper names are generally pronounced as in the original language. Some entries are obscure and may be useful only in a game of mathematical trivia, e. g. d'Alembert's mother, the name of the line in a fraction, or who shot Galois. I have not had the time to include most definitions or accomplishments. The curious person may try searching the internet for such information. However I have given a few, they are indicated with Move the curser to the symbol and wait a second. D ates include B.C. or A.D. only if the choice is not obvious from the context. The Guide is not complete, I will be adding more pronunciations and entries as time permits. (I did not give up my day job.) (The red dates and purple pronunciations are not links.)
