Arne Beurling and the Swedish Crypto Program During World War II
by Bengt Beckman
Reviewed by Donald L. Vestal
I have met many gifted persons in my day, but only one genius. I need not mention his name. He was a demi-god, so I was very proud.
These are but two of many similar quotes concerning the cryptographer/mathematician Arne Beurling. (The first quote is from Ake Lundqvist, one of Beurling's fellow cryptographers; the second quote is from Gunnar Blom, a conscript in the cryptography department, on how he valued any praise received from Beurling.) This book, through the use of interviews and historical documents, gives an insider's view of the history of Swedish cryptography, with special attention paid to Arne Beurling. The (original Swedish version of this) book was written by Bengt Beckman, a notable name in Swedish cryptography circles, and the English translation was provided by Kjell-Ove Widman , Director of Sweden's Mittag-Leffler Institute. Let's start with a brief description Codebreakers Forsvarsstaben apps So, who is the book written for? The writing is geared towards a general audience. If you are interested in the history of cryptography, or perhaps even in history in general, then you'll find much to enjoy in this book. If you are interested in the mathematics of cryptography, then this book, while appealing, may not satisfy you.

From Reviews of the Swedish Edition:
Cryptologia "The book contains a well of information ... including detailed accounts of how several of the breaks were performed ... The Swedish cryptanalytical achievements are top class and therefore, it is only appropriate to put Sweden in the same league as the other cryptographic `superpowers' at the time: Poland, England, and the USA ... The book is well written and at times, reads like a good thriller ... contains new and unpublished information ..."
Cryptologia Description One of the greatest accomplishments in the history of cryptography occurred in 1940 when a Swedish mathematician broke the German code used for strategic military communications. This story has all the elements of a classic thriller: a desperate wartime situation; a moody and secretive mathematical genius with a talent for cryptography; and a stunning mathematical feat, mysterious to this day. Arne Beurling, the man who inherited Einstein's office at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, was the figure who played this role at a crucial moment in world history.
Though the cracking of the code from the Geheimschreiber (G-Schreiber) device is every bit as impressive as the breaking of the Enigma code by the Poles and English, this secret has been kept for over 50 years! Through the eyes of a former head of Sweden's signal intelligence organization, Bengt Beckman, the reader will learn about the events leading up to the breakthrough and make the acquaintance of not only a remarkable mathematician, but also a remarkable human being.

Arne Beurling and Swedish crypto
Cryptologia , Jul 2003 by Kruh, Louis ARNE BEURLING AND SWEDISH CRYPTO Beckman, Bengt. Codebreakers: Arne Beurling and the Swedish Crypto Program During World War II. American Mathematical Society, 201 Charles Street, Providence RI 02904-2294 USA. 2002. 259 pp. $39.00 The opening chapters discuss: how Beckman solved a coded message in an 18th century diary; describe the first known ciphering machine, which was Swedish, and notes its similarity to the Bazeries' cylinder; the work of Swedish crypto machine pioneers such as Arvid Damm, who aided by Commander Olof Gylden, founded a cipher machine company (Gylden's son, Yves, later played a major role in Swedish crypto history); and Karl William Hagelin (father of Boris) who helped to rescue Damm from bankruptcy. Beckman also describes some cipher machines produced by these pioneers. Continue article Advertisement

Swedish cryptanalysis and the saga of Arne Beurling: A book review
Cryptologia , Jul 1999 by McKay, Craig Graham ABSTRACT: The author provides a short review of Bengt Beckman, Svenska kryptobedrifter, [Swedish achievements in cryptology], Albert Bonniers forlag, Stockholm, 1996. KEYWORDS: Sweden, intelligence, sigint, cryptanalysis, Geheimschreiber, Beurling. Svenska kryptobedrifter, [Swedish achievements in cryptology] by Bengt Beckman. Stockholm: Albert Bonniers forlag. 1996. The present volume is an excellent illustration of the best kind of popularization of a complex, technical subject, in this case Swedish wartime cryptanalysis. Bengt Beckman, who has spent his working life as a grey eminence with Sweden's Sigint organization, the Defense Radio Institute (FRA), has been permitted to twitch the company veil and show what his colleagues got up to during World War II. In the process of following the historical development, the reader is gently introduced to the basic ideas of crypt analysis before coming face to face with the Geheimschreiber. This was the ten wheeled cipher teletype machine, weighing in at around 180 kilos, used to encrypt high-level German signal traffic on lines passing through neutral Sweden. Directly following their attack on Denmark and Norway, the Germans had asked for permission to use the Swedish cable system for their communications. The Swedes consented and promptly proceeded to tap the traffic.

History of Institut Mittag-Leffler
Acta Mathematica as an international mathematical journal. First-rate contributions from leading mathematicians in France and Germany were obtained, and Mittag-Leffler managed to arrange financial support from the Scandinavian governments, partly through the patronage of King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway. Acta Mathematica is still published by the Mittag-Leffler Institute, now with two volumes a year, and is considered to be one of the oldest and most prestigious mathematical journals in the world.
In 1916 the plans for the Institute were realistic at least in that Mittag-Leffler's financial resources were adequate for the task. However, in 1922 there was a large financial crash related to the economic crises in Europe at the time. The crash brought Mittag-Leffler near bankruptcy and at his death in 1927 the resources did not allow the realisation of his original intentions.
The mathematicians of the Academy of Sciences appointed Torsten Carleman as Director of the Institute. Carleman's main position was a professorship at University of Stockholm. He lived in Mittag-Leffler's villa where the library was maintained and occasional lectures were given. Also the publication of
