K Satisfied that Scotland had finally succumbed to his rule, King Edward I now turned his attention on France. But his resources were being stretched as he had a rebellion in Wales to deal with. Therefore he summoned King John Balliol to appear before him, and then ordered that he had until 1 September 1294 to provide the troops and funds for his invasion of France. 22 October 1294 King John Balliol openly came out in defiance of his Lord Paramount, King Edward I. It was not until the summer of 1295 5 October 1295 th Berwick , Jedburgh and Roxburgh 16 October 1295 December 1295 March 1296 February 1296 , King Edward I upped the ante, and amassed a fleet of ships off the East Anglian coast, which sailed north to rendezvous with his land forces in Newcastle. 11 March 1296 Several of the Scottish nobles choose to ignore the summons, it included the Earl of Carrick, Robert Bruce, who had their Annandale estate seized by the Crown and reassigned to the Earl of Buchan, John Comyn. The Crown also seized the estates of the Earls of Angus and Dundee as they sided with the English.

Gilbert de Grimsby deflection from the English army would have brought valuable intelligence about their numbers and tactics to the rebel forces. Shortly after his release from captivity in the latter months of 1296 One of the first acts that Sir William Douglas undertook as a rebel was to lead the assault and subsequent capture of Sanquhar Castle, but it was later besieged by the Captain of Durisdeer. William Wallace immediately headed south after he heard of the situation, and defeated the English at Dalswinton, having killed five hundred of them in the progress. Since April 1297 the north of Scotland was also in revolt, with Andrew de Moray and his right hand man, Alexander Pilche, raising the banner for freedom in the name of John Balliol. This minor gentry led a small rebel army of common men across the country attacking and devastating every English garrisoned castle from Banff to Inverness . Possibly under the guidance of Robert Wishart they employed the same hit and run guerrilla tactics that worked so well for William Wallace, as they harassed and killed the English at will. By now practically the entire Moray region was in revolt, as the remaining burgesses hastily abandoned their sworn allegiance to King Edward I and united with Andrew de Moray, under the banner of freedom.

Today the fragmented medieval ruin of Berwick castle beside the Victorian train station and Royal border bridge is a shell of it's former glory, originally a great Scottish fortress fought over by the Scots and the English for centuries. If it's stones could talk what tales they could tell invasions, massacres, wars, hostage taking and the like. In 1296 King Edward I of England, the "Hammer of the Scots" invaded Scotland besieging Berwick castle and it's town "walls" (actually a wooden palisade). Edward and his army entered the town by surprise spending three days ruthlessly killing almost the entire civilian population. While the castle's garrison led by William "the hardy" Douglas could do nothing in their defence. Sadly this slaughter of innocent civilians is not confined to the pages of the past but has been repeated again and again throughout history. Even in the recent Balkans conflict some 700 years after the Berwick massacre. Edward eventually ended the carnage on seeing a pregnant woman giving birth being hacked to death by his men.

In 1314 King Robert the Bruce defeated King Edward II at the battle of Bannockburn near Stirling castle. Edward fled down the coast passed Edinburgh and on towards Dunbar pursued by James the 'Black' Douglas. The English garrison at North Berwick, on hearing of their King's flight and the approach of the 'Black ' Douglas, deserted their posts; "they gave up this castle and retired to the castle of Dunbar ", as Lord Dunbar was still in league with the English and ships could safely dock here to evacuate Edward and his men to 'South Berwick' (Berwick on Tweed), which was still in English hands since the massacre of the entire Scots population in 1296. Because Dunbar was too strong for Douglas to besiege, he probably slighted North Berwick, as like the Bruce he had a policy of destroying castles in the Lowlands to prevent them from being used by the English as stepping stones for re-invasion. Tantallon , which may explain the sudden disappearance of 'Castle Hill'. The background to this conflict is complex.
