Landsteiner's classification Associated persons: Karl Landsteiner Description: A classification of human blood into groups O, A, B, and AB based on the presence of antigens on the erythrocytes. This system of blood typing made blood transfusion routine medical practice. In a footnote to an article in 1900, Landsteiner first expressed that the interagglutination of human blood samples was a physiological characteristic. His article the following year is a milestone in medical science. In 1902, Alfred von Decastello and Adriano Sturli discovered a fourth (the rarest) group. In 1924 the mathematician Felix Bernstein (1878-1956) finally established the inheritance of blood type. The phenomena of agglutination had been known long before Landsteiner's monumental observations in 1900. Of particular interest are the works of Leonard Landois (1837-102), professor of physiology at Greifswald, and the French bacteriologist and immunologist Jules Jean Baptiste Vincent Bordet (1870-1961).

Too little, too late?
With two weeks left till the preliminary city election, at-large councilor Felix Arroyo finally gets serious about campaigning for re-election
BY DAVID S. BERNSTEIN FELIX ARROYO is energetic but earnest. The collar of his blue-striped oxford is open and his jacket hangs from a hook in his small City Hall office. He leans forward across the bare table and talks about neighborhood planning and development; increasing parent participation in education; improving the distribution of services throughout the city; removing lead from the water and dioxin from the air. Clearly, these are serious issues for a member of this city’s august council, and clearly Felix Arroyo, from Hyde Park, is a serious city councilor. At least, that’s what he is now, with an election coming and a lot of press saying he’s in danger of losing his job less than a year after getting it. But during our interview, that solemn bearing keeps slipping off him like a little boy's Sunday-school blazer. One can almost hear his son, Felix Arroyo Jr. (an aide to District Seven councilor Chuck Turner), who is listening at the office doorway, mentally willing his father back on message. Talking about education — his specialty as former president of the Boston School Committee — Arroyo leans back and waxes philosophical about teaching students Boston’s diverse history as a way to "affect the unity of the city," an example he believes will spread outward, into the suburbs if not the entire nation.

[HM] Did Cantor prove the Schroeder-Bernstein theorem?

In "The beginnings of set theory"
(see http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/HistoryTopics.html
it is said that Cantor, in his final double treatise (1895-97),
"proves that if A and B are sets with A equivalent to a subset of B
and B equivalent to a subset of A then A and B are equivalent. This
theorem was also proved by Felix Bernstein and independently by E.
Schroeder."
As you all know, this famous result is almost universally known as
the "Schroeder-Bernstein theorem". But if Cantor did prove it, as
stated above, why his name is not mentioned? I do not remember now where I saw "Cantor-Schroeder-Bernstein theorem", but I know of no other text (written before the 1970s) where it is said that Cantor Let me examine with you some authoritative sources with which I am very well acquainted. According to Abraham Fraenkel in his book

    Why this FAQ?
Dan's documentation initially had no recipes for common problems. In the mean time he has greatly expanded his documentation and I suggest you go there first and read through all the documentation. This FAQ is unofficial and is meant to contain other, more exotic questions, too, like questions about IPv6 and how to have a dnscache and a tinydns on the same IP.
How do I contribute to this FAQ?
Just write an email to felix-dnsfaq@fefe.de. Please don't just send questions, send answers. I am not an automated help desk for djbdns, although I do offer commercial support. Oh, my name is Felix von Leitner, and for now, I am the sole maintainer of this FAQ. Feedback is welcome. The email address is not a link (to discourage dumb spam bots from finding it).
    What is djbdns?

Who are Boole, Fitch, and Tarski?
Here's a list of the logicians that show up in Barwise and Etchemendy's Language, Proof, and Logic and in the exercise files for Tarski's World. Most names are linked to websites with more information.
    Abelard, Peter
French theologian and philosopher best known for his work on the problem of universals. He is also known for his poetry and for his celebrated love affair with Heloise Abelard and Heloise were the original celebrity couple.
    Ackermann, Wilhelm
German logician and student of Hilbert . Gave the first direct consistency proof of a non-trivial mathematical theory, and contributed to research on the decision problem. Co-author (with Hilbert) of
    Aristotle (384-322 BCE)
Ancient Greek philosopher and founder of logic as an independent discipline. His theory of categories and syllogisms as presented in On Interpretation and the Prior Analytics shaped the field of logic up until the 19th century.

These two articles were as close as Henry Perigal came to orthodox scientific publication. He was the author of many other items, but nearly all probably at his own expense. These two were solicited by his friend and colleague James Glaisher, an orthodox professional mathematician (author of several articles on mathematics in the Encyclopaedia Britannica , for example), whose comments are included at the end of the first. The first one contains the famous dissection proof of Pythagoras' Theorem, while the second shows how to dissect a square and rearrange the pieces so to make up a rectangle of given length. (This is the converse of Euclid's II.14.)

Presented by Mrs. Curt Stern, 1981-82. Curt Stern's unpublished autobiographical sketch, contained among the Curt Stern papers, tells much about his early years. His father was a dealer in antiques, and later in dental supplies. His mother was a school teacher. Neither of them seems to have been very scientifically inclined, but they placed no obstacle in the way of Curt's boyhood interest in capturing lizards in the vicinity of Hamburg, Germany, where they lived, and in observing their habits after bringing them home; or in his collecting of rabbit skulls, or observing the microscopic animals of ponds and streams. His mother, especially, to quote Curt's own words, "fostered in me a desire to join the ranks of scientists. Her ambition spilled over to me."
