Excerpt
It's 8:23 in New York
What I can't describe is how beautiful the day is in New York; clear skies, visibility all the way to the other side of wherever you think you are looking. Or looking away. After the long and strange odyssey back from LaGuardia airport this morning, I went to a jammed local Upper West Side coffee shop. A family was eating, deciding, loudly, whether to get the chicken or tuna salad; the mother expressed great disappointment that there was no skim milk. The coffee shop was packed and the mother said, "Well, it's OK, at least we're not in a rush right now and after all the restaurant probably has more people now than they are used to handling." Outside, two guys with work boots and cell phones strapped to their waist yelled toward the coffee shop, "I can't believe these fucking people are sitting in a cafe when the city is being blown up."

Proofs of Pythagoras' Theorem using translations
Conceptually, one of the most attractive ways to' prove Pythagoras' Theorem is to find a partition the three squares into smaller regions, with the property that the partition of the large square is assembled from regions in the partitions of the two other squares. Such proofs are among the oldest known. Some of them turn out to be closely related to the straightforward `algebraic' proofs. There is in fact a general and elementary result about areas in the plane (apparently proven first around 1900) which asserts that if two polygonal figures in the plane have the same area, then one can find piecewise congruent decomposition of the two figures. That is to say, on grounds of general principle one knows that if Pythagoras' Theorem is true, one can find the sort of partitions we are looking for.

This has apparently been found independently many times. On each side we have a square of side a + b . On the left inscribed in it is a square of side c , and four copies of the original right triangle. The area of the square on the left is therefore

INTRODUCTION
Nothing New Under the Sun - A New Sun Each Day
Joel Felix T he scope of these essays include the honeycombed structure of contemporary poetics, that stack of cells of poetic demography which poses as multiplicity but, like the storehouse of the bee, locks into hexagons from the weight of the grid. It may be no stretch to link those hexagonal cells to the franchise expansionism of say, US pizza chains, whose aggressive-growth strategy dictates the exact delineation of space within a given area that the potential consumer is willing to travel for a pizza. That space is hexagonal as efficiency dictates. The honeycomb before us reminds that we are most certainly numerous, to bow to George Oppen, and poems never more so. But it may be impossible to tell just now whether "poetics" is defined by markets or poets, by poetry "zones" or genre poetry as a product of situated identity, or by Helen Vendler. To mark ebr 's foray into poetics, we've agglutinated an abbreviated Quo Vadis of contemporary praxis, though the direction implicit to

General, short description of the collection
A short description:
This collection of Jakob Nielsen papers consists mainly of reprints, which Nielsen has received from other scientists and sorted by authors. In addition to the reprints there is other material from some of the persons, i.e. letters, manuscripts, applications for positions etc. All the material is from the period around 1890-1959 and the reprints are in many different languages. However, the additional material is mainly in Danish or German.
Size:
The collection is contained in 79 archival boxes of which the first 25 are standard boxes while the rest are Nielsen's original boxes.
Handed over:
The collection was located in the basement of the mathematical library in the E block of the H. C. Ørsted Institute in the fall of 1996. It is not known when and how it was put here. Photocopies of material from the Staatsarchiv Hamburg was added to box 10 in July 1999.

Overordnet beskrivelse af samlingen
Kort beskrivelse:

His group of "Stereos" never charted.
There are other mistakes.
The Young Rascals
Taken from Dick Clark's "The First Twenty-Five Years of Rock And Roll"
The biggest event in New York City in August in 1965 was the Beatles concert at Shea Stadium. Over fifty-six thousand screaming fans converged on Flushing, Queens, the night of August Sixteenth to see John, Paul, George, and Ringo. When they got to Shea Stadium there was a cryptic message on the giant electric scoreboard in center field "The Rascals are here."
The day after that Beatles concert, Bernstein became the Young Rascals? manager. Within a month he had set off a bidding war among the major record labels, and the Young Rascals signed a contract with Atlantic Records. Now Bernstein could legitimately proclaim, "The Rascals are here."
In early 1964, Felix and Dino joined Sandy Scott and her Scotties. After a quick tour of Las Vegas, both Dino and Felix had had enough of the Scotties and started looking for something else. Felix then played organ with Joey Dee and the Starlighters at the Peppermint Lounge in Manhattan. Joey Dee soon brought in a new lead singer, Eddie Brigati, and a new guitarist from Canada, Gene Cornish, whose group had broken up, leaving him stranded in New York.
By the end of 1964, Felix, Eddie, and Gene were chafing at the bit doing the twist every night at the Peppermint Lounge. They decided to form their own group, adding their old friend Dino on the drums. They spent the winter working on their act. In February 1965, the Young Rascals made their debut in Garfield, New Jersey, at the good old Choo Choo Club. By July, they had moved to the Barge in Southampton, where Sid Bernstein found them.

Felix Bernstein

n early December of 1956, immediately after the opening of Candide , Bernstein fled to Nassau to get away from it all. He talked to no one for three days, except to order his meals, as he rested and lucked his wounds far from the madding crowds of Broadway. Even had the show been an unqualified triumph, too much of his music had been jettisoned along the bumpy road from Boston to New York for him to feel comfortable about the hit-and-miss business of composing a Broadway show. As it as, he must have experienced a brief sense of despair at all the hard work and agonized hours that had failed to jell. West Side Story was still waiting in the wings, but Cheryl Crawford, who had become the show’s producer the previous April, had not yet succeeded in assembling a production package. Meanwhile, Bernstein had committed himself in the months ahead to a heavy new load of conducing and television programs. In November 1956, shortly before Candide opened, he had been appointed joint principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic, effective the 1957-1958 season, sharing the title with Mitropoulos, who was stepping down as musical director. The appointment was widely seen as an interim move which would test Bernstein’s willingness and ability to devote a substantial portion of his time to the Philharmonic. His first contact with the orchestra, after a six-year hiatus, would be the month-long engagement arranged before negotiations for a more permanent position had begun. This was brought forward and additional two weeks to December 13, as a result of the death in the Pairs airplane crash of Italian Conductor Guido Cantelli. Bernstein kept to Cantelli’s planned programs, which mean restudying among other music the grand

Biographical Note
Zygmunt William “Bill” Birnbaum (1903-2000), was for thirty-five years professor of mathematics and statistics at the University of Washington (1939-1974). Zygmunt William Birnbaum was born in Lw³w, Austria-Hungary, on October 18, 1903, to Ignacy and Lina Birnbaum. He attended grade and high schools (gymnasium) in Lw³w and Vienna, and then, in deference to his family's wishes that he pursue a "practical" degree, he obtained a master of law degree from the University of Lw³w in 1925. He practiced law for a year, but during that time he resumed his studies in mathematics. In 1926 Birnbaum received a teaching certificate in mathematics. He taught at a gymnasium in Lw³w from 1925 to 1929 while continuing his graduate studies in mathematics under Hugo Steinhaus and Stefan Banach, among others. He received his Ph.D. in 1929, with Steinhaus as his major professor.
