Daniel Bernoulli (1700 - 1787) The Bernoulli family may sound like a Mafia family from a television show, but they were the most predominant math family of Europe. Their fame was in the late 17th and early 18th century in Bale, Switzerland. The uniqueness of this particular family is a stubborn streak which brought devastation to the family life. The Bernoulli family was originally from Holland with strong Calvinism religion. They needed to avoid Spanish religious persecution, so they fled to Switzerland. Nicholas Bernoulli brought the family to Switzerland. This family was not math oriented, they had a spice business in Bale. He had three sons which two of them became the most influential math experts in the academic community yet hostile to each other. The eldest son, Jacob (James or Jacques), was born 1654 and died 1705 in Bale, Switzerland. His parents compelled him to study philosophy and theology. Like a Bernoulli, he resented the studies but he did acquire a masters in philosophy. He was intrigued with mathematics and astronomy so much he included them with his studies, regardless his parents wishes. He made more of a career in mathematics than philosophy. He became the first Bernoulli to be recognized as a strong influential mathematician. He contributed highly to probability: if something is going to happen again and again is large amounts, it is likely it will happen most of the time. He may be a brilliant mathematician, but he did have a mean streak.

Johann Bernoulli
Daniel Bernoulli Jacques and Johann Bernoulli of Basel, Switzerland, along with their descendents, became distinguished in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as mathematicians and physical scientists. Daniel, son of Johann, was trained as a physician and later taught anatomy, mathematics, and physics. However his greatest work was the 1738 book Hydrodynamica , lauded as the first cohesive, substantial treatise on hydrodynamics to be composed. That book coined the term “hydrodynamics” and also anticipated a number of later developments, including the kinetic-molecular theory of gases, the principle of jet propulsion, and the law of conservation of energy. The family’s sharing of talent did not induce a sharing of good will. Daniel’s father, a highly competitive man, in 1743 composed a book Hydraulica and predated it to 1732, prior to the publication of Daniel’s book. By doing so, he claimed to have originally developed many of Daniel’s ideas himself. Daniel wrote to the renowned mathematician Euler that Johann, through this act, had diminished Daniel of his inventions and robbed him of the efforts of ten years. However Hunter Rouse claims that Johann’s work should be recognized for its anticipation of the Bernoulli principle, which is now typically credited to Daniel.

THE BERNOULLI PROJECT
Already in the eighteenth century, it was recognised that it was desirable to have the large volume of published work, of the first generation of Bernoullis, available in collected format. This was done in the case of Johann I during his lifetime. Under the supervision of Johann II, Gabriel Cramer edited the four-volume set Opera Omnia Johannis Bernoulli published in Geneva 1742. (It was reissued with an introduction by J. E. Hofmann, under the imprint of Georg Olms Verlag, Hildesheim, 1968). Parallel with this collection of the work of Johann I, the published work of Jacob I was also being edited by Cramer under the direction of Nicolaus I: it appeared in two volumes titled Jacobi Bernoulli Basiliensis Opera Geneva, 1744. (It was reissued in Bruxelles in 1967 as a unit of

Print publication: Issue 5 (September 1999) Abstract. Johann Bernoulli's brachistochrone problem is now three hundred years old. Bernoulli's solution to the problem he had proposed used the optical analogy of Fermat's least-time principle. In this analogy a light ray travels between two points in a vertical plane in a medium of continuously varying index of refraction. This solution and connected material are explored in this paper. doi:10.1088/0143-0807/20/5/301
