Bernoulli Daniel
1700, Groningen - 1782, Basel Daniel Bernoulli was the son of Johann Bernoulli . He was born in Groningen while his father held the chair of mathematics there. His older brother was Nicolaus(II) Bernoulli and his uncle was Jacob Bernoulli so he was born into a family of leading mathematicians but also into a family where there was unfortunate rivalry, jealousy and bitterness. When Daniel was five years old the family returned to their native city of Basel where Daniel's father filled the chair of mathematics left vacant on the death of his uncle Jacob Bernoulli. When Daniel was five years old his younger brother Johann(II) Bernoulli was born. All three sons would go on to study mathematics but this was not the course that Johann Bernoulli planed for Daniel. Johann Bernoulli's father had tried to force Johann into a business career and he had resisted strongly. Rather strangely Johann Bernoulli now tried exactly the same with his own son Daniel. First however Daniel was sent to Basel University at the age of 13 to study philosophy and logic. He obtained his baccalaureate examinations in 1715 and went on to obtain his master's degree in 1716. Daniel, like his father, really wanted to study mathematics and during the time he studied philosophy at Basel, he was learning the methods of the calculus from his father and his older brother Nicolaus(II) Bernoulli. Johann was determined that Daniel should become a merchant and he tried to place him in an apprenticeship. However Daniel was as strongly opposed to this as his own father had been and soon Johann relented but certainly not as far as to let Daniel study mathematics. Johann declared that there was no money in mathematics and so he sent Daniel back to Basel University to study medicine. This Daniel did spending time studying medicine at Heidelberg in 1718 and Strasbourg in 1719. He returned to Basel in 1720 to complete his doctorate in medicine.

JOHANN(I) BERNOULLI
BORN: July 27, 1667 in Basel, Switzerland
DIED: January 1, 1748, in Basel, Switzerland
Johann(I) was the son of Nicolaus Bernoulli, younger brother of Jakob(I) and Nicolaus(I) and father to 3 sons, of whom the most notable one is Daniel(I). His other two sons were Nicolaus(I) and Johann(II). Johann's calling in life, as proposed by his father, Nicolaus, was to become a merchant and take care of the family's trading interests. However Johann avoided this by studying medicine and becoming a physician. Although this wasn't what his father had in mind, it kept Johann away from mathematics. It appeared that his father's choice of careers for him had permanently dissuaded the young Johann from becoming mathematically minded, but after writing his doctoral thesis in 1690, he became so heavily involved in studying the calculus that he did so until his death in 1748. It was Johann's older brother Jakob who tutored him in mathematics in the beginning. It was considered that Johann was a jealous man who not only didn't get along with his brother, but it is said he was responsible for his son Daniel leaving home for winning a prize for which Johann had competed as well. There was a bitter resentment between the two brothers, but they still chose to share ideas and work together. They also worked with Leibniz and between the three of them came up with the contents of many of our basic calculus textbooks we use today.

Johann and Daniel Bernoulli
W. Bruce Fye, M.D., M.A. Cardiovascular Division, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA Johann Bernoulli (Fig. 1) and his son Daniel (Fig. 2) made pioneering contributions to the fields of hemodynamics and muscle mechanics. Johann Bernoulli was born in Basel, Switzerland, on August 6, 1667, and was educated at the university there. His studies focused on mathematics and medicine. Bernoulli's inaugural dissertation on the movement of muscles, published in 1694, is important for several reasons, including the fact that it represents the first application of the principles of differential calculus to a biological problem. As a student of mathematics and medicine, he was influenced by the so-called iatromechanism school, led by Giovanni Borelli. Johann was among the first to embrace and extend the emerging field of differential calculus, and his writings propelled him to the front ranks of mathematics, along with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz and Isaac Newton. After Newton died in 1727, Johann's many important publications and his other academic activities led to a consensus that he was Europe's leading mathematician. Johann's second son, Daniel, was born on February 8, 1700, in Groningen, The Netherlands, where his father was then teaching.
