Biography Daniel Bernoulli, whose name I mentioned above, and who was by far the ablest of the younger Bernoullis, was a contemporary and intimate friend of Euler, whose works are mentioned in the next chapter. Daniel Bernoulli was born on Feb. 9, 1700, and died at B¢le, where he was professor of natural philosophy, on March 17, 1782. He went to St. Petersburg in 1724 as professor of mathematics, but the roughness of the social life was distasteful to him, and he was not sorry when a temporary illness in 1733 allowed him to plead his health as an excuse for leaving. He then returned to B¢le, and held successively chairs of medicine, metaphysics, and natural philosophy there.

Jacob or James Bernoulli He was one of the earliest to realize how powerful as an instrument of analysis was the infinitesimal calculus, and he applied it to several problems, but did not himself invent any new processes. His great influence was uniformly and successfully exerted in favour of the use of the differential calculus, and his lessons on it, which were written in the form of two essays in 1691 and are published in the second volume of his works, shew how completely he had even then grasped the principles of the new analysis. These lectures, which contain the earliest use of the term integral, were the first published attempt to construct an integral calculus; for Leibnitz had treated each problem by itself, and had not laid down any general rules on the subject. The most important discoveries of James Bernoulli were his solution of the problem to find an isochronous curve; his proof that the construction for the catenary which had been given by Leibnitz was correct, and his extension of this to strings of variable density and under a central force; his determination of the form taken by an elastic rod fixed at one end and acted on by a given force at the other, the elastica ; also of a flexible rectangular sheet with two sides fixed horizontally and filled with a heavy liquid, the

Daniel Bernoulli

März 1782 in Basel.

Daniel Bernoulli
Daniel Bernoulli Groningen February 9 Basel March 17 ) was a Dutch -born mathematician who spent much of his life in Basel Switzerland . He worked with Leonhard Euler on the equations bearing their names. Bernoulli's principle is of critical use in aerodynamics . It is applicable to steady, inviscid incompressible flow , along a streamline Born as the son of Johann Bernoulli , and nephew of Jakob Bernoulli , Daniel Bernoulli was by far the ablest of the younger Bernoullis. He is said to have had a bad relationship with his father. Upon both of them entering and tying for first place in a scientific contest at the University of Paris , Johann, unable to bear the "shame" of being compared to his offspring, banned Daniel from his house. Johann Bernoulli also tried to steal Daniel's book Hydrodynamica and rename it Hydraulica . Despite Daniel's attempts at reconciliation, his father carried the grudge until his death. Daniel Bernoulli taught at the University of Basel for 26 years until his death. He was a contemporary and intimate friend of Euler. He went to

First edition of Bernoulli's epochal work on fluid dynamics and kinetic gas theory. 'Bernoulli's Hydrodynamica [was] one of the major works initiating the mathematical study of fluid flow. Bernoulli presents the following equation for steady, non viscous, incompressible flow: p + p v2/2 + p gy = A, where p symbolizes pressure, p density, v velocity, g the acceleration of gravity, y height, and A a constant. He also examines the equilibrium oscillation of an inertialess ocean, and explicitly states that the flow equations are appropriate not only for the more common applications of fluid dynamics but also for the flow of blood in veins and arteries. Bernoulli, like Galileo Galilei in 1638 and Christiaan Huygens, assumes conservation of mv2 rather than conservation of momentum mv, m and v symbolizing a body's mass and velocity respectively' (Parkinson, Breakthroughs).

Bernoulli, Daniel (1700-1782), Dutch-born Swiss scientist, who discovered the basic principles of fluid behaviour. He was the son of Johann Bernoulli and the nephew of Jakob Bernoulli, both of whom made major contributions to the early development of calculus.
Bernoulli was born in Groningen, the Netherlands, on January 29, 1700, and took an early interest in mathematics. Although he earned a medical degree in 1721, he became a Professor of Mathematics at the Russian Academy in St Petersburg in 1725. He later taught experimental philosophy, anatomy, and botany at the universities of Groningen and Basle, Switzerland.
Bernoulli pioneered in Europe the acceptance of the new physics of the English scientist Isaac Newton. He studied the flow of fluids and formulated the principle that the pressure exerted by a fluid is inversely proportional to its rate of flow (see Bernoulli's Principle). He used atomistic concepts in trying to develop the first kinetic theory of gases, accounting for their behaviour under conditions of changing pressure and temperature in probabilistic terms. This work, however, did not gain wide notice at the time. Bernoulli died in Basle on March 17, 1782.

Daniel Bernoulli and the making of the fluid equation
by D.A. Quinney
Daniel Bernoulli 1700-1782
Source: The Turner Collection, Keele University. Daniel Bernoulli, born in 1700, came from a long line of mathematicians. His father Johann was head of mathematics at Groningen University in the Netherlands. The family was prone to bitter rivalry: something he was to suffer when he became estranged from his father some 30 years later. At the age of five, the Bernoulli family returned home to Basel in Switzerland, so that Johann's wife could be with her ailing father. Some years earlier Johann had applied to become professor of mathematics at Basel University, but this was denied him because his elder brother, Jakob had deliberately schemed to prevent him getting the post. Later Jakob got the professorship. En route to Basel, Johann learned that Jakob had just died of tuberculosis. He later recalled rather shamelessly that " ... I could succeed to my brother's position." He set about lobbying for the vacant position and in less than two months he got his way.
