Dateinfo: Dates Certain
Lifespan:
2. Father
Occupation: Aristocrat, Man Of Letters
His father, a Spaniard with patrician status, is spoken of as a philosopher and physicist (physicus), which Stillman Drake suggests means that he was interested in natural philosophy in general.
Later in his career Benedetti apparently had ample private means. He must have inherited them, and it appears to me that the circumstances must have been at least affluent. Note as well that he did not attend a university, which means that he had no need of professional credentials in order to live.
3. Nationality
Birth: Venice, Italy
Career: Italy
Death: Turin, Italy
4. Education
Schooling: No University
He learned philosophy, music and mathematics from his father. He had no formal education beyond the age of seven, except that he studied the first book of Euclid's Elements under Niccolo Tartaglia, probably about 1546-1548.

A look back in time at the lever and the spine.
The lever as a tool was probably used for simple things like prying and moving rocks since time immemorial.
The lever can be seen as a working tool as long as 5,000 years ago in Egypt. The shaduf was used by ancient Egyptians to help farmers get water from the Nile to dry land to irrigate their crops. The weight at the far end provided a "see-saw" mechanism which aided the farmer in lifting the bucket of water to land.
This riddle actually depicts the aging process of the human spine. From the book Anatomy and Human Movement Structure and Function . Palastanga N, Field D, Soames R, 1989, Goodman writes that the aging of the spine goes from the C-shape type of posture to the S-shape and back to C-shape in the elderly. For 3600 years many questions about postural development of man have remained a mystery. Why do humans develop the S-shape posture shown? Why does it make them an efficient biped? As humans age, why does the spine degenerate into the C-shape?

Highlights from Recent Acquisitions
The Dibner Library acquires a Herald of Science:
Joseph Lister's classic work of 1867, "On the antiseptic principle in the practice of surgery."
Lister, Joseph (1827-1912). "On a new method of treating compound fracture, abscess, etc., with observations on the conditions of suppuration," in Lancet (1867): 95-96. WITH: "On the antiseptic principle in the practice of surgery," in Lancet (1867): 353-356, 668-669. Together two volumes of the Lancet, 4to. [2], 818; [2], 826 pp. The Dibner Library obtains another Herald of Science: A set of Acts of Parliament relating to the longitude problem. Recently the Dibner Library acquired a collection of Acts of the British Parliament and two period newspaper articles relating to the longitude problem and calendar reform. The purchase of the set was made possible with the Special Collections Endowment Fund. The importance of solving the problems of longitude and calendar reform were critical to the history of science and technology and this collection will enhance the research and exhibition values of the Dibner Library's holdings.
  • "An Act for rendering more effectual an Act made in the twelfth year of the reign of her late majesty Queen Anne, intituled, 'An Act for providing a publick reward for such person or persons as shall discover the longitude at sea', with regard to the making experiments of proposals made for discovering the longitude" (1762)
