Stan, I understand your frustration. It can be quite difficult to find information via the World Wide Web. Either the search engines haven't catalogued what you want or it is difficult to narrow the search. I spent about 45 minutes to an hour looking up what little I found. I strongly suggest you continue your efforts at the largest library you can find. One of the best references I found was the following: http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/HistTopics/Longitude1.html In 1514 Johann Werner published a translation of Ptolemy's Geography. In his commentary on Chapter IV, Werner put forward what became known as the lunar distance method for determining longitude. The method uses the fact that the Moon moves fairly quickly against the background stars, moving through its diameter in about one hour. If tables are given for the distance of the Moon from certain stars then it is possible in principle to determine an absolute time for the place of observation and thus to determine the longitude by comparing the absolute time with the local time in the same way as Hipparchus had proposed for his lunar eclipse method. Werner proposed using a cross-staff, an instrument derived from the Jacob staff of Levi ben Gerson, to measure the distance of the Moon from the chosen stars. He writes:-

THE FOLLOWING LIST was created by Flora and Herbert Gursky, with some minor changes made by Jim Yarin. The Gurskys surveyed the two New York City Amdur burial areas to obtain the information here. The two areas were owned by the Amdur Benevolent Society: one in the Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, the other in the Mount Judah Cemetery in Ridgewood (Queens). In the original Gursky list, no indication was made as to from which cemetery each of the burials were recorded.
Jim Yarin made a survey of the Beth David Cemetery, only taking down names, and so the Gurskys list was then revised with an additional column to show which burials were in Beth David (BD), and by default, the remainder indicate burial at Mount Judah (MJ). In a few instances, burials recorded by Jim Yarin did not appear on the Gurskeys' list, so that certain "BD" burials do not have genealogical information attached. Note that in many instances gravestones are obstructed or worn from the elements, making transcription difficult.
The relationship abbreviations are H(usband), W(ife), F(ather), M(other), G(rand)M(other), G(rand)F(ather), G- (Great-).

While I am very sympathetic with Doron Zeilberger's frank and direct way of expressing his ideas and while most of the mathematics he does with his companion Shalosh B. Ekhad has a strong appeal to me, I am far to agree with it on many minor aspects of his opinions. (It is better to have read Doron Zeilberger's text before reading this. Mathematician=programmer ?
  • No, a Ph. D. in math does not warrant at all the ability to learn programming, even when one has removed those very common psychological blocks DZ refers to. There is a lot to unlearn, there is the whole social implication of a researcher in the academic system. Moreover, we all now math Ph. D. who aren't smart *at all* and especially about mathematics. Introducing this kind of public to even mathematically-minded computer macro-languages like TeX is sometimes worth Hercules' works. Part of the trouble with any academic system is that there are areas, times and circonstances were you can be dubbed "researcher" or "professor" by only being a good schoolboy, no need to be smart or creative about the subject. In fact, the mathematics researchers I know who program well had most of the time a keen interest in programming or computers before they graduated. It makes me appreciate even more the senior mathematicians who are good with these tools or who switched successfully at a late stage in their career.

The entry for "Pascal's Triangle" reads
used the term "arithmetical triangle" (triangle arithmetique). In Italy it
is called Tartaglia's triangle and in China it is called Yang Hui's
