Les synagogues du Caire La synagogue chaar ha chamaim Temple Ismalia du Caire Par Elie Nessim Cohen Elle est la plus belle et le plus grande de toutes les synagogues juives sépharades du caire. Elle est située en plein centre « chic » de la capitale égyptienne. (17, rue Adly Pacha, ex Madabegh). Elle a été construite en 1905 par des familles riches pour les habitants aisés du quartier. La famille Mosséri, Nessim bey Mosséri et surtout Vita bey Mosseri ont largement contribué à son édification. C’est l’ingénieur juif Maurice Cattaoui qui a tracé les plans de ce magnifique temple monument d’art de style exotique. La synagogue se compose de deux niveaux et est bâtie sur un terrain carré de 10 000m². Elle possède plusieurs salles et une riche bibliothèque. Chaar Ha Chamaim « la porte du ciel » a été complètement rénovée en 1980 par des habiles ouvriers et artistes peintres égyptiens. Les juifs sépharades de Genève (Suisse) ont largement financé et surveillé cette restauration bien réussie. entrée Le gros des livres et archives qui se trouvait dans les divers temples et centres juifs du Caire a été transféré, archivé et classé dans sa bibliothèque.

Outrora, lamentavelmente dilapidada, a Sinagoga Ben Ezra - uma das mais antigas do Egito e receptáculo da famosa Geniza do Cairo - foi toda reformada, voltando à sua antiga grandeza, pela equipe da arquiteta e preservadora canadense, Phyllis Lambert, natural de Montreal. Situada na vizinhança da igreja Sta. Barbara, num modesto bairro copta-cristão, freqüentado por vendedores ambulantes de souvenirs baratos, o "shul" encontrava-se num estado lastimável antes do início do Projeto de Restauração da Sinagoga Ben Ezra em janeiro de 1988. O falecido Presidente do Egito, Anuar Sadaf, concebeu o projeto como sendo um complemento do acordo de paz com Israel, assinado em Washington em 26 de março de 1979.
