Giusto Bellavitis 's father, Ernesto Bellavitis, was an accountant with the government of Bassano. Bassano had been a dependency of Venice since 1405 but in 1796, just seven years before Giusto was born, Napoleon defeated the Austrians at a battle there. Ernesto Bellavitis had come from a family that was part of the nobility of the Bassano but, by the time that Giusto was growing up in the town, his parents (his mother was Giovanna Navarini) were not wealthy. Giusto did not attend any educational establishments but was taught at home by his father. Ernesto Bellavitis gave his son a good appreciation and liking for mathematics but before long Giusto had greatly exceeded his father's knowledge of the subject. He continued to study mathematics on his own, reading texts and trying to solve the latest problems. In 1822, at the age of 18, Bellavitis began to work for the municipal government of Bassano like his father. However, this makes it sound as if he earned his living from this work, which was not so for until 1832 he received no salary for his efforts. Given that he was receiving no pay it is remarkable how conscientious he was in carrying out his duties! Bellavitis did spend most of his free time working on mathematics, however, and he published important papers starting from 1834. It was in that year that Bellavitis gave formulae for the areas of polygons which were discovered independently by

    LETTERA V GIUSEPPE VERONESE

Luigi Messedaglia The "Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti" was already in embryo in the bill of 19 Brumaire a. VI (9 November 1797) presented by Napoleon Bonaparte to the Executive Directory of the Cisalpine Republic. This decree stated under Art. 297: "For the whole Republic there must be a National Institute appointed to collect discoveries, and to perfect the arts and sciences"; Bologna, the city with the oldest university in Europe, was chosen as its location, on account of the "ample and suitable establishments for this purpose".
Subsequent political and military events meant that this Institute was practically inoperative as far as Venice and the Veneto were concerned, since, under the terms of the Treaty of Campoformio, they had been excluded from the new state created by Bonaparte: thus, while some of the first academics were from Venice or the Veneto, they figured as individuals, and not as representatives of the Institute of Venice.
In 1802, with the transformation of the Cisalpine Republic into the Italian Republic, the projected National Institute was founded, and, on 17 August 1802, by decree of the Legislative Corps the new Institute was officially launched, divided into three sections: physical and mathematical sciences, moral and political sciences, letters and fine arts.

Math Words, pg 18 Back to Math Words Alphabetical Index Astronomical Unit An astronomical unit, usually abbreviated as AU, is the mean distance from the Earth to the Sun, or very nearly 149,600,000,000 meters. The AU is also used in the definition of a parsec , short for "parallax second". A parsec is the radius of a circle for which a central angle of 1 second (1/3600 of a degree) would cut an arclength of one AU. This makes a parsec equal to about 206265 AU, or about 3 1/4 light years. If you like big numbers, the unit of distance called the Hubble , named for American Astronomer Edwin Powell Hubble, is a billion light years, or about 1/12 the radius of the Universe.
Atlas One of the earliest (see note below regarding Waldseemuller) people ever to bind a group of seperate maps together into a single book was a Belgian-German cartographer named Gerhard Kremer. Kremer is better known for the Latinized version of his name, Mercator . The name Kremer in German, and Cremer in Dutch both mean merchant. The Latin name for a merchant was Mercator, and the word was commonly used for the travelling book merchants of Germany and the lowlands. When Kremer followed the fashion of educated German men of his period to Latinize his name, he chose Gerardus Mercator de Rupelmonde. Rupelmonde was his birthplace. Mercator gave the name Atlas to these volumes of maps to suggest that they "held" the whole world. He also included a graphic of Atlas holding the sphere of the world on the title page. Mercator explained his choice with the words, "I have set this man Atlas, so notable for his erudation, humaneness, and wisdom as a model for my imitation."
