Eric Temple Bell From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Eric Temple Bell ) was a mathematician born in Scotland who lived in the USA from until his death. He attended Stanford University and Columbia University (where he was a student of Cassius Jackson Keyser ) and was on the faculty first at the University of Washington and later at the California Institute of Technology . He did research in number theory ; see in particular Bell series . He attempted — not altogether successfully — to make the traditional umbral calculus (understood at that time to be the same thing as the "symbolic method" of Blissard) logically rigorous. He is the eponym of the Bell polynomials and the Bell numbers of combinatorics , and of the Bell series . (He is not the eponym of the " bell curve ", which is so called because of its apparent similarity in shape to the cross-section of a bell.) In he was awarded the B´cher Memorial Prize for his work in mathematical analysis.

Tales of Statisticians Eric Temple Bell 7 Feb 1883 - 20 Dec 1960 Bell was no statistician; rather, a number theoretician. He was and remains one of the great mathematical statesmen. His book Men of Mathematics has inspired scores to take up a mathematical career, and revealed to uncounted thousands what a mathematical life is all about in the first place. His own early life was a mystery until parts of it were unraveled by Constance Reid Bell retired from CalTech in 1951, and died at the age of 77 in 1960. With the assistance of D H Lehmer, who had provided the otherwise missing final chapter, he had just completed a book entitled The Last Problem. It was about Fermat, to whom, and to whose tantalizingly unproved Last Theorem, a chapter of Men of Mathematics had already been devoted. Bell's conviction at the time, that Fermat's unmatched insight into the character of numbers did not mislead him as to the existence of a proof, was vindicated recently when a proof was finally found. Bell's infectious love of number, his sense of the large sweep of mathematical history, and his generous anger at the fools and poopheads who all too densely populate that history, are his great legacy to posterity.

He says in his autobiographical writing that he left England:- ... to escape being shoved into Woolwich or the India Civil Service. In the United States he supported himself with a variety of different jobs, from ranch hand and mule skinner to surveyor. He entered Stanford University in 1905, being awarded an A.B. with honours in mathematics two years later. He then studied for his Master's Degree at the University of Washington which he received in 1908. He received his doctorate from Columbia University in 1912 after one year of study for the dissertation The Cyclotomic Quinary Quintic. At Columbia his doctoral work was supervised by C J Keyser. Two years before he received his doctorate, Bell married Jessie Lillian Smith Brown. They had one son. Bell taught mathematics at the University of Washington from 1912 being appointed first as an Instructor but rose to the rank of Professor over the fourteen years he taught at the university. In 1926 he left Washington when he was appointed professor of mathematics at the California Institute of Technology, holding that post until illness forced him to retire a year before his death.
