Here is another legend told by Marie Caroline Watson Hamlin in Legends of le Détroit: SANS SOUCI
At the beginning of the 19th century, Gabriel Godefroy was an agent for the Pottawatomies and the Chippewas, two of the First Nations who lived in the Detroit River area. He had many contacts with all members of the Detroit River community — French, English, Native, American and Canadian — and people often gathered at his house, as much to do business as to have a good time. It is said that the wine and the cider flowed freely at these affairs.
In Gabriel Godefroy’s stable, behind the house, lived his clerk, a mysterious old bachelor named Jean Beaucgrand. People were very wary of him. He had an old mare called Sans Souci. People hated Sans Souci. She spent her days eating fruits and vegetables from the habitant’ s gardens. People said there wasn’t a fence she couldn’t jump. Someone even claimed to have seen her jump over the fort’s palissade — a wall twelve feet high ! The more Sans Souci ate, the thinner she got, until she was nothing more than a skeleton with skin. People would chase her off with sticks. She would sometimes spend hours watching people in the streets of Detroit. Some thought she was laughing at them. They swore she could understand people’s conversations. But Sans Souci got along very well with Jean Beaugrand, who lived in the stable with her. One night, while a group of businessmen were gathered at Gabriel Godefroy’s house, someone was sent to get the wine cellar key from Jean Beaugrand. The man came back without the key, but with the astounding news that he had seen Jean Beaugrand and Sans Souci sitting at the table together, laughing and talking! The crowd rushed out to observe this phenomenon. Climbing up a ladder, one of them confirmed the story: he could see the strange couple playing cards and quaffing big glasses of cider. Gabriel Godefroy kicked the door in, but too late: Sans Souci had escaped through the window and was back in her stall downstairs. Naturally, Jean Beaugrand denied the whole thing.

Soldiers in the Carignan-Salières Regiment
By the mid 1600's the French in New France had developed very strong commercial ties with the Algonquin and Huron Indians in the fur trade. So when the Iroquois waged war on the Algonquins and Hurons, as they had for many years, even before the Europeans arrived in North America, the French went to the aid of their commercial partners. By doing so, the French earned the hatred of the Iroquois. Prodded on by the English, who also wanted the French out of North America, the Iroquois began raiding French villages and slaughtering the people.
When the Iroquois began raiding French villages and slaughtering the people, the French began to form military units under militia Captain Pierre Boucher. However, this wasn't enough so Governor Davaugour dispatched Pierre Boucher to France to seek help from King Louis XIV.
At that time, there was a regiment of seasoned soldiers in France known as the Carignan Regiment . It had been formed as a private army in 1644 by Thomas François de Savoie, Prince de Carignan. This was an army for hire, made up of hand-picked volunteers. The standards were very high and these men had to be big and strong physically with a strong fighting spirit. In the hire of the King of France, this regiment had just returned from a successful engagement against the Turks. Rather than demobilize the regiment, the King determined to send it to New France (Canada) to help the colonists. The Regiment was placed under the command of Henri de Chapelas, Sieur de Salières and was therefore renamed the

Jean Beaugrand studied under . He became a friend of Fermat and Mersenne . He was also a friend of Desargues but later had a dispute with him. Beaugrand met Hobbes Cavalieri , Castelli, Galileo and corresponded with them. He also corresponded frequently with Fermat and it is through this correspondence that Fermat 's work became known in Paris. In 1630 Beaugrand became a Court Official being named mathematician to Gaston of Orleans. Gaston, the third son of King Henry IV, had been made Duke of Orleans in 1626. However he soon came into conflict with Louis XIII and a military conflict resulted. He fled to Lorraine in 1631, then to the Spanish Netherlands in 1632. As with many mathematicians in this period Beaugrand's life was greatly affected by wars and the fate of his employer. Beaugrand published Geostatique in 1636 and also published on mathematics. As well as mathematics, Beaugrand was interested in astronomy. He observed eclipses and other astronomical events.
