Thomas Bayes ' father, Joshua Bayes, was one of the first six Nonconformist ministers to be ordained in England. He was ordained in 1694 and moved to Box Lane Chapel, Bovington, about 25 miles from London. Thomas's mother was Anne Carpenter. The family moved to Southwark, London, when Thomas was young and there Joshua became an assistant at St Thomas's and also an assistant at the Chapel in Leather Lane, Holborn. Thomas was the eldest of his parents seven children, four boys and three girls. In [1] Hacking claims that Thomas was educated privately, something he says appears necessary for the son of a Nonconformist minister at that time. If this is the case, then nothing is known of his tutors but Barnard in [6] points out the intriguing possibility that he could have been tutored by de Moivre who was certainly giving private tuition in London at the time. However other historians (see for example [21]) suggest that Thomas received a liberal education for the ministry. In that case it is likely that he attended Fund Academy in Tenter Alley which was the only school with the right religious connections near where Bayes lived.

Thomas Bayes (1702-1761) Given the number of times in which an unknown event has happened and failed: Required the chance that the probability of its happening in a single trial lies somewhere between any two degrees of probability that can be named." In a (now) famous essay published posthumously (1764), Thomas Bayes asked this question, and gave an answer. The question is a version of "inverse problem":if you know that a certain kind of event E (e.g., head appears on a coin toss) occurs with probability x , you can calculate the probability that E occurs s times out of n trials, and this is a "direct problem"; but Bayes's question goes into the opposite direction, looking for the correct value of x (e.g., what's the probability of head on this coin?), based on the result of n trials, and hence it is "inverse". First, it must be noticed that he defined probability as follows: The probability of any event is the ratio of the value at which an expectation depending on the happening of the event ought to be computed, and the value of the thing expected upon its happening. In short, he regarded probability as a sort of (rational) betting ratio , and he tried to derive the laws of probability (including what we now call Bayes's Theorem) from this definition. Thus it is quite understandable why modern Bayesians call themselves by his name.

Who was the Reverend Thomas Bayes?
The following is quoted from the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Bayes, Thomas (b. 1702, London - d. 1761, Tunbridge Wells, Kent), mathematician who first used probability inductively and established a mathematical basis for probability inference (a means of calculating, from the number of times an event has not occured, the probability that it will occur in future trials). He set down his findings on probability in "Essay Towards Solving a Problem in the Doctrine of Chances" (1763), published posthumously in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. The only works he is known to have published in his lifetime are Divine Benevolence, or an Attempt to Prove That the Principal End of the Divine Providence and Government is the Happiness of His Creatures (1731) and An Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions, and a Defence of the Mathematicians Against the Objections of the Author of the Analyst (1736) which countered attacks by Bishop Berkeley on the logical foundations of Newton's calculus. Here is some more information about Bayes taken from the book The Official Guide to Bunhill Fields . Bunhill Fields is a park in London, England where Bayes is buried (see The Burial Place of Bayes below).
