Lincolnshire Breweries BATEMANS
Tel. 01754 880317 Fax. 01754 880939 e-mail jaclynbateman@bateman.co.uk History in the words of the chairmen. As you will see below, we have a very full history. George Bateman, Chairman 1874 - 1921 I am the grandfather of the present Chairman both with the Christian name of George. In 1874 my wife Suzanna and I decided to sell our farm in the nearby village of Friskney and rent a small brewery in Wainfleet. For £505 10s (equivalent to £30,000 in today's terms) we purchased the brewery equipment from Edwin Crowe and a year later, with some financial difficulty, we bought out the lease for £800.
Apart from the beer Suzanna would brew in our kitchen in Friskney while baking the bread for us to consume after a hard day on the land neither of us very much knowledge on either brewing or the business of running a brewery.
Fortunately Edwin Crowe passed on all he knew before he retired. His brewer was not ready for retirement and despite being blind, some say from excess drink (not that I am one to spread rumours), stayed with us for several more years.
The brewer, unfortunately I cannot remember his name but for now we will call him Mr. Maltshovel, had an acute sense of smell and taste, hardly surprising after all the years of practice his taste buds had had. Mr. Maltshovel the temperature by sticking his elbow into the fermenting vessel.

http://www.midlandspubs.co.uk/brewers/nonmidlands/bateman.htm
BATEMAN'S BREWERY
This site is devoted to the Midlands' region so I am not covering every UK brewery. However, this is one of the pages devoted to a brewery from outside the region. The reason for its inclusion is that the beers can be found on the counters of many pubs in the Midlands. Indeed, they operate pubs in the Midlands.
Thi s brewery was established in 1874 by George and Suzanna Bateman, the present Chairman's grandparents, when they were forced to sell their 42 acre farm in the tiny hamlet of Friskney, some 16 miles north of Boston, Lincolnshire. In s earch of another farm to purchase, George Bateman walked to the neighbouring town of Wainfleet where he met Edwin Crow, the owner of the brewery at Salem Bridge. The brewery had been in the hands of the Crow family for 50 years and Edwin was looking to retire. Although he knew nothing about the business, George entered into partnership with Edwin Crow who taught him all the tricks of the trade. The business prospered and by 1874 George was able to buy out his partner for £505.10s.0d. This success was probably due to a combination of hard work and luck, as the railway line from Boston to Skegness had just opened and two dry summers had caused both the wells supplying the other local breweries to fail, whereas the Salem Bridge brewery used water from the Steeping River. In 1876 the Bateman family bought Salem House, a Georgian property just down the road from the original brewery. He paid £800.0s.0d. with a mortgage of £543.18s.4d. In 1877 George Bateman bought the land on which the existing brewery was standing as this had only been rented. As it cost £1,260.0s.0d. (£800.0s.0d. mortgage), this purchase seems surprising, especially since the new brewery was constructed behind Salem House and in use by 1880 as shown by the datestone over the door.

Raffles, The Gentleman Thief John Armstrong as A. J. Raffles John Armstrong’s versatility has allowed him to perform in a glut of mediums including opera, concert musical theatre, improv theater and theater- theater with equal success. Armstrong is often praised for his acting as well as his singing. After his opening night as Pistola in Verdi’s Falstaff with Opera Colorado, a critic from the Denver Post wrote:” John Armstrong has a rich Italian voice and the subtle comic timing of his movements on stage would have made him a star of the silent screen”. The Boulder daily Camera ballyhooed his Count Almaviva in the Marriage of Figaro: “John Armstrong’s magnificent portrayal of the Count expressed all the qualities that Mozart had intended.” Another ‘fabulous’ critic wrote in The Capitol Times, Wisconsin: “His Don Quixote in Man Of La Mancha is immensely convincing. He is not afraid to let the moment carry the actor instead of the contrary”. John made his operatic debut with Opera Colorado in Denver in their 1988 production of Gianni Schicchi as Simone and Pinnelino returning the following season to sing roles in the company’s productions of Falstaff and La Traviata. He then went on to perform several leading roles with Milwaukee’s Skylight Opera Theatre including Escamillio in Carmen, Taddeo in L’italiana in Algieri, The Duke in the Gondoliers, Don Quixote in Man Of La Mancha and Lank in Girl Crazy. Other Opera and Musical performances include Mikado in The Mikado and Dick Dead Eye with Grant Park Symphony in Chicago, Guglielmo in Cosi Fan Tutte with Chicago Chamber Opera, La Mancha and Petrucchio in Kiss Me Kate with Madison Opera in Wisconsin and The Title role in Kopit and Yeston’s The Phantom in Cumberland Playhouse in Tennessee. John sang the lead role in Colorado Springs Symphony’s concert production of Nabucco and the role of Top in the Aspen Opera Festival’s production of The Tender Land by Copland.

07/12/05 - EAA HOLDS FIRST LSA REPAIRMAN INSPECTION COURSE In yet another Sport Pilot/Light Sport Aircraft first, EAA conducted the nation's first LSA Repairman Inspection course for airplanes this past weekend at EAA headquarters in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. All eight students passed the course, which was taught by EAA's Joe Norris, senior aviation specialist and designated airworthiness representative for E-LSA, Special-LSA and amateur-built aircraft. Successful completion allows the graduates to perform annual condition inspections on any experimental-LSA (E-LSA) airplane they own. New certificated LSA repairmen include: Bill Bateman, Mequon, Wisconsin; Harry Crisman, Genoa, Illinois; John Dyke, Amherst, Ohio; Jim Kress, Oshkosh, Wisconsin; Brian McCallen, Walkerton, Indiana; John Reis, Hartford, Wisconsin; Richard Resser, Waterford, Wisconsin; and Don Thistle, Lodi, Wisconsin.
Van Stumpner, FAA Aviation Safety Inspector, was in attendance to monitor the course. "I liked the course," he said. "It was well presented and the training aids were excellent. I think it will turn out well qualified repairman."
Charlie Becker, director EAA SportAir Workshops, added, "Developing a new course, especially one requiring FAA acceptance, takes a team effort by a number of EAA staff. Having an experienced and knowledgeable instructor like Joe helps a lot."

2002 Town Report 250th Permanent Gift Committee Years of Service Brenda K. Weathersbee, Chair Lois Johansen Marilynn L. Foley, Secretary Debbie L. Levins Roy Fraser III Clare W. Williams Lee Hill The 2002 summer concert season at the Holden Bandstand was carefully planned and anticipated by veteran and new concert attendees as the best entertainment in the area. Local businesses generously supported a variety of new and previously engaged talents in the summer program. The 5,000 to 6,000 music fans enjoyed performances ranging from blues, to rock to jazz. The committee engaged the bands, introduced them at each concert, distributed balloons to children and cleaned up after each performance. The Committee members are satisfied that the landscaping of the new Holden Senior Center ties in nicely with the existing commemorative trees and rose bushes of the bandstand. During the holiday season the 250th Permanent Gift Committee decorated the bandstand with garlands, a colorful string of Hanukkah dreidel lights and a holiday tree. Again this year we owe our thanks to Bill Howett of Rutland who supplied the beautiful Blue Spruce tree. The lights for the tree are "purchased" by those who wish to remember or celebrate love ones or to contribute to concert funds . During the "Light A Light" opening ceremony attendees were entertained with Christmas carols and winter songs sung by a local citizens. As a finale to the ceremony the lights on the bandstand tree were then lit by long time resident and supporter of Holden 19s community affairs Elizabeth Newell. Our sincere thanks to Mrs. Newell and everyone who made "Light A Light" a great success.

    90 minutes
Since his 1997 breakthrough in I Went Down and The General , Brendan Gleeson has popped up in projects as varied as Mission: Impossible 2 Lake Placid and The Tailor of Panama Not a bad niche, and certainly a profitable one, but Gleeson, who’s younger than Nick Nolte, deserves better. On paper, Wild About Harry seems ideal: the title character is a boozy, ebullient, slobbish TV chef who, after to a head injury, thinks he’s 18 again. The killer phrase, howver, is ‘on paper’ – scriptwriter Bateman may be one of  Ireland’s best-selling novelists, but he doesn’t seem to realise that movies are a completely different ball-game from fiction. The result is that, while Harry has some promising elements, they never come together – the ingredients instead curdle into an unappetising, indigestible mess.
