General George had just been appointed Commander of the Northwest Territories, and this was one of his bases. It was twilight when Major Joe Moore, the pilot of the C-40, landed at Batchelor airfield Major Moore parked the aircraft half way down the runway in the designated area to disembark. Bush who was No. 4 on People Magazine's list of the country's 100 most -eligible bachelors last year and is the son of Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, told the magazine that he and fiancee' Amanda Williams want "to start a family as soon as possible." But first a little family business: Bush will work for his uncle's re-election campaign before the nuptials. Bush 27, recently graduated from the University of Texas School of Law and plans to take the bar next month in Texas. He said he met Williams in a law school class when he passed her a note asking if she wanted to play golf.

TAM Report No. 783 (February 1995)
A conversation with Prof. George K. Batchelor
Abstract
On October 26, 1994, Prof. G. K. Batchelor, F.R.S., of Cambridge University delivered the Yunchuan Aisinjioro-Soo Distinguished Lecture, 'Living with Research', at the Beckman Institute on the campus of the University of Illinois. The following day, October 27, Professor Batchelor visited with various groups on campus. During the morning of that day he spent an hour or so in an open conversation and exchange with faculty and students of the TAM Department. Some highlights of this interesting exchange are transcribed below from a videotape of the occasion. We felt that the exchanges and the many historical remarks, primarily regarding G. I. Taylor, might be of interest to a broader audience, and this provided the motivation for producing a TAM Report available for general circulation. In the transcript Professor Batchelor is identified as GKB, Prof. D. Scott Stewart, who hosted the conversation and had the initial draft transcript prepared, by DSS, Prof. Donald E. Carlson by DEC, Prof. James W. Phillips, who videotaped the session, by JWP, Prof. S. Balachandar by SB, Prof. Harry H. Hilton, a TAM alum and Emeritus Professor of Aerospace Engineering, by HHH. Graduate students' names are written out in full. The draft transcript was edited slightly for fluency by Hassan Aref, and Professor Batchelor kindly read it over. In his words he "cheated a bit, in that the text represents what I meant to say rather than what I did say." The photographs included were taken by Professor Phillips. The initial transcription from a tape recording was done by Athan Chilton.

New Small Animal Hospital Project Receives Boost
With $100,000 Gift From Batchelor Foundation
by SARAH CAREY T he Batchelor Foundation has given $100,000, the first significant building block in the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine's quest to build a new small animal hospital. The Batchelor Foundation, founded by aviation entrepreneur George E. Batchelor, of Miami Beach, is known for its philanthropy, particularly in South Florida. The foundation focuses primarily on environmental issues and children's causes, including medical research. "George is just passionate about the University of Florida veterinary school's commitment to the care of animals," said his daughter-in-law of 23 years, Sandy Batchelor. "He's not afraid of any animals - tarantulas, snakes, rhinos, cheetahs. And he has petted them all." The UF veterinary college gift, known as a "challenge grant," was originally earmarked toward Small Animal Hospital renovation as well as for the treatment of sick and injured animals receiving care at UF's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The significance of a challenge grant is that all the funds contained in it are to be used on a matching-fund basis for the same purpose. Once the college has raised the matching $100,000, the Batchelor Foundation will contribute an additional $100,000.
