G. K. Batchelor
George Batchelor, founding editor of the Journal of FluidMechanics, died on 30 March 2000. Amongst his many achievements, he will be remembered for his vision in creating JFM in 1956, through which he established Fluid Mechanics as a discipline. George was always concerned with physical understanding and emphasized the necessity of maintaining strong links between theory and experiment. As Editor of JFM for more than forty years, he encouraged not only the highest standards of scientific research but also the highest standards of presentation of ideas. His attention to detail was meticulous. His influence on Fluid Mechanics was worldwide. George was an undergraduate in physics at Melbourne University, where he also obtained a master's degree in 1941. After four years working for the Australian Aeronautical Research Laboratory, he went to work with G. I. Taylor at the University of Cambridge, where he became a Fellow of Trinity College in 1947. He founded the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in Cambridge in 1959, and was its head until 1983. Throughout this time he welcomed and encouraged generations of fluid dynamicists who came as faculty, as students and as visitors. George was already afflicted by the early stages of Parkinson's disease when his wife, Wilma, died in 1997. His health declined rapidly thereafter, but he survived long enough to enjoy his 80th birthday on 8 March.

He was head of the department of applied mathematics and theoretical physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge for nine years and master of Jesus College, Cambridge for three years. Crighton was born on 15 November 1942 in Llandudno, North Wales, to which his parents had been evacuated in World War II to avoid German bombing. Christened David (but not Lloyd!) George, and claiming no Welsh ancestry, he captained his school at rugby and won a mathematics scholarship to Cambridge. He graduated as a top student in 1964. In his first position, as a lecturer at Woolwich Polytechnic, Crighton taught mathematics to mature students in night school, where, he claimed, he mastered the elements of crowd control. But, having reached the top of that career path by the age of 24, he switched his sights to research. In 1967, he joined my group in the mathematics department of Imperial College as a research assistant.

Professor George Keith Bachelor FRS, 1920-2000
Without George Batchelor modern fluid mechanics would not be the discipline it is today; which he saw as combining physical insight and the application of mathematics directed towards the solution of specific problems; a philosophy of science that was, he said, epitomised by H. Poincare's Science and Method. Batchelor ensured that his vision of the subject and his high standards prevailed both by the example of his own brilliant research work and thorough exposition, (in an unusual prose style that somewhat reflected his admiration for that of Henry James), and by his forceful, tenacious and inspired leadership of Cambridge and internationally based institutions most notably the Journal of Fluid Mechanics whose world-wide circulation peaked at about 2500 per issue. During the 1950's; as a Fellow of Trinity College, and University Reader he established in pokey offices in the Cavendish Laboratory in Free School a world famous group of fluid dynamics, under the benevolent eye of G.I. Taylor, who was still, in his 70's, doing his experiments and asking question about everyone else's. At the formidable seminars held at 4.30 on Fridays, which Batchelor instituted in 1948, many crucial theoretical developments were first presented including his own. He managed these lively occasions like a circus lion tamer, with a turn of his head and a stare at any stupidity or excessive harassment of visiting speakers. To report on the rapid and exciting developments in the subject, many of which resulted from the cold-war boom in aerospace, Batchelor saw that a new journal was needed, which he founded in 1956 as the Journal of Fluid Mechanics. He readily persuaded the leading specialists from over the world to join the Editorial Board; one of the greatest honours for a fluid dynamicist is still to be invited to be an Associate Editor of JFM!

George Batchelor was the son of George Conybere Batchelor and Ivy Constance Berneye. He attended Essendon and Melbourne high schools. He completed his secondary school education in 1937 after exceptional achievements. He the entered the University of Melbourne to study mathematics and physics. Batchelor graduated from Melbourne University in 1940, continuing to obtain a Master's Degree in 1941. Due to World War II, he then undertook work for the war effort at the Australian Aeronautical Research Laboratory. His work there was on fluid flow problems in aircraft engines. The work he undertook at this time gave him an interest in fluid dynamics which would become the topic on which he did research for the rest of his life. In fact it was more specific than that, for the applications he studied in the Aeronautical Research Laboratory convinced him that turbulence was the most important problem to attack in aerodynamics. At this time Batchelor wrote his first paper, which appeared in 1944

    Health Writer
Posted July 31 2002 George E. Batchelor, 81, an aviation entrepreneur and philanthropist who gave millions of dollars for research on children's health, died Monday night at his home in Miami Beach from lung cancer.
Last year, the University of Miami School of Medicine dedicated the Batchelor Children's Research Institute named for him. Mr. Batchelor contributed $15 million toward construction of the building that houses pediatrics research and other children's health programs.
University President Donna Shalala said Tuesday that Mr. Batchelor "improved the quality of life for our most vulnerable citizens. He was shrewd, smart, fun, and had a huge heart."
Mr. Batchelor's association with the university began when he brought his then-14-year-old son, Falcon, diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, to see Dr. Robert M. McKey, founder of UM's Cystic Fibrosis Center. Other doctors had told the family Falcon had only a few years to live, but under McKey's care, he lived to be 35.
Before the building dedication May 3, 2001, Mr. Batchelor said: "The 20 quality years we had with Falcon after his visit to the campus were a gift from the University of Miami that we will never be able to repay."
