DANNY BARNES Straight shooter Ernest Hemingway retreated to the pueblo of Villa Cubero on Old Route 66 in New Mexico to write major portions of " Old Man and the Sea ." By sitting with his notebooks in the desert sun, Hemingway was better able to see the water. This is not to suggest that singer-songwriter Danny Barnes is a budding Papa-Barnes is a Nathaniel Hawthorne fan. But when Barnes left his native Texas for the Seattle area in 1997, his musical world opened like doors on the House of the Seven Gables. Barnes began regular collaborations with acclaimed jazz-folk guitarist Bill Frisell, who is based in Seattle. He hooked up with keyboardist Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Allman Brothers), violinist Darol Anger (David Grisman, Turtle Island String Quartet, Psychograss), multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell (Balfa Toujours), drummer Carlton Jackson, vocalist Amy Denio, and was embraced by Seattle bass player Garey Shelton (Bo Diddley, Randy Meisner). They all appear on Barnes' new Dirt on the Angel recording, which was primarily made at Shelton's studio in Seattle as well as Macon, Georgia. Dirt on the Angel is a sonic passport throughout the diverse ports of American music. It is an ambitious project that celebrates Barnes' ethic of adventure with dignity. The journey runs from a dramatic turn-of-the-century instrumental in "

Ernest Hemingway - The Sun Also Rises
When I was in college, I had a discussion about Hemingway with a comely graduate student who I desperately wanted to know in a slightly more intimate sense. Now that I look back on it, I realize that I've never deliberately had a discussion about Hemingway with anyone who I didn't want to sleep with. This might seen shallow, and it is, but everything that could possibly be said about Papa has been said already, and if I can't use my sensitive insights about anti-Semitism in The Sun Also Rises to get some, what good is he? But back to the grad student. We were talking about Hemingway, and she wrinkled her nose and said, "I can't stand Hemingway. He's just so...male. And white." (The grad student in question was white, too, but she listened to jazz, which I suppose gave her the right.) I considered retorting that I couldn't read Toni Morrison because she's just so...female. And black. But you can never be too careful about making ironic statements on a college campus. If any member of the PC brigade was within earshot, I would've been beaten severely and made to attend a "cultural sensitivity" seminar. So I just smiled and nodded. Later I found out the object of my affection was a lesbian. And so it goes. I first read The Sun Also Rises in an American Literature survey course. My professor was a manic former journalist prone to expansive arm gestures and standing on furniture. What I remember most about the Hemingway discussion in his class was him screaming "I

Jake Barns as a Code Hero in The Sun Also Rises
Ernest Hemingway is a renowned American author of the Twentieth century who centers his novels on personal experiences and affections.  He is one of the authors named "The Lost Generation." He could not cope with post-war America, and therefore he introduced a new type of character in writing called the "code hero".  Hemingway is known to focus his novels around code heroes who struggle with the mixture of their tragic faults and the surrounding environment.  Traits of a typical Hemingway Code Hero
are a love of good times, stimulating surroundings, and strict moral rules, including honesty.  The Code Hero always exhibits some form of a physical wound that serves as his tragic flaw and the weakness of his character.  In Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also
Rises Jake Barnes is the character who maintains the typical Code Hero qualities; while Robert Cohn provides the antithesis of a Code Hero.
Jake Barnes, the narrator and main character of The Sun Also Rises, is left impotent by an ambiguous accident during World War I.  Jake's wound is the first of many code hero traits that he features. This physical wound, however, transcends into an

Dear Professor Manheim: -
Professor Sigmund Neuman[n] has suggested that perhaps you would be willing to prepare a brief essay of around fifteen typewritten pages on Hans Freyer for a symposium I am editing on modern sociologists. If you would be interested I would be glad to write you more in detail about the enterprise.
Cordially yours

ONLINE HEMINGWAY LIBRARY Fathers and Sons [Chapter 6] *Excerpt from "The Importance of Being Ernest: Hemingway's Truth in Fiction and His Fiction in Truth" by Josh Silverstein Ernest Hemingway's relationship with death is almost as complex as his relationship with his mother. Though I've primarily emphasized the intricacies of Hemingway's gender identification and his mother's direct influence in this process of conceptualization, it is important to note that during his infancy, Grace Hemingway closely adhered to a traditional model of motherhood, showering her first-born son with warmth and affection: With his first breath of life, Grace had drawn baby Ernest into a deliciously intimate dependency. For six months he slept in her bed, where she allowed him to pat her face, squeeze up close to her and feed at will from her pillowy breasts. "He is contented to sleep with Mama and lunches all night," she happily recorded in her scrapbook." (Lynn 43) As Hemingway grew out of this "intimate dependency," he yearned for the greater freedom and rugged experience of his frontiersman father. Grace, no longer symbolizing the nurturing mother, instead represented an obstacle to her son's manly self-image, a tyrant evoking fear in his desire to solidify a distinctive masculine identity. In later years, this fear would become a scornful hate. To close friends, Hemingway never sugarcoated his true feelings for his mother. It was a hate so deeply embedded that he refused to attend her funeral when she died in 1951.

    LITERARY FRIENDS, Part Two
    Gertrude Stein
In 1904 the American writer Gertrude Stein moved to Paris with her brother Leo and they began collecting works of art. Gertrude Stein met the writer Alice B. Toklas in Paris in 1907, and the couple lived together throughout the post-World War I period, entertaining major literary and artistic figures in their famous art-filled salon at 27, rue de Fleurus. Alice also was Gertrude's secretary and the cook. Among their circle of friends were the artists Pablo Picasso (and his wife Olga), Pavel Tchelitchev, Henri Matisse and Georges Braque, the composer Virgil Thomson, the photographers Cecil Beaton, Man Ray and George Platt Lynes, the writers Jean Cocteau, Djuna Barnes, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Bernard Faÿ and Thornton Wilder, her couturier Pierre Balmain, and many others. In 1938 Gertrude and Alice moved to another apartment at 5, rue Christine. In 1931, the young Paul Bowles met Stein and Toklas in Paris, and he was later a houseguest at their summer home in Belignin in southern France. Stein gave Paul the nickname "Freddy" and suggested to him that he was not really a poet. Gertrude Stein also advised Bowles to go to Tangier, Morocco—an exotic port city on the Mediterranean which had a mild climate. Gertrude and Alice had vacationed in Tangier on several occasions. The young Bowles took Miss Stein's advise, and he made his first visit to Tangier in August 1931 with his friend and music teacher Aaron Copland, composing music in a house they shared on the Old Mountain.

Kay Boyle (1902-1992), the author of almost forty volumes of fiction, poetry, essays, and translations, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and studied as a teenager at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. After her marriage, Boyle moved to Greenwich Village with her husband, saving money to live in France, a country she revered because she believed it "did not put its socialists in jail, as Eugene Debs was jailed in America, and did not harass its writers." In New York City she worked as a secretary in the office of the experimental literary magazine
