41. The Barnes Foundation - About Barnes
About barnes The barnes Foundation. ernest Lawson, and Maurice Prendergast in his Argyrol factory to be studied and discussed by his workers.
http://www.barnesfoundation.org/h_main.html
Dr. Albert C. Barnes established The Barnes Foundation in 1922 to "promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts." Born in a working class Philadelphia neighborhood in 1872, Barnes received a B.S. degree from Central High School in Philadelphia and, at the age of twenty, his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He also studied chemistry and pharmacology at the University of Berlin, and at the Ruprecht-Karls-Univerität in Heidelberg, where he befriended German scientist Herman Hille. Barnes' extensive personal studies in psychology, philosophy and art - particularly his reading of John Dewey, George Santayana, and William James - led him to form his own theories about art and education. Combining his educational concepts and his compassion for the working man with his burgeoning interest in the arts, Barnes initiated educational seminars and hung paintings by William Glackens, Ernest Lawson, and Maurice Prendergast in his Argyrol factory to be studied and discussed by his workers. His first formal classes in art appreciation were held at the factory for the benefit of his employees. In 1918, Dr. Barnes attended John Dewey's seminars at Columbia University to study the scientific method in education. Dewey and Barnes quickly became close friends and collaborators. Dewey's influence and a desire to provide nondiscriminatory access to art and education led Barnes to create The Barnes Foundation in 1922, naming Dewey as the Foundation's first Director of Education in 1923. A new force had entered the world… a self-made man with substantial financial and intellectual resources, combative intensity, relentless curiosity, a keen eye for art, and a deeply-rooted respect for the common man.

http://www.neh.gov/news/humanities/2005-07/hemingway.html
Ernest Hemingway
One True Sentence By Cynthia Barnes They were perhaps, the greatest literary rivals of the twentieth century, brothers in self-destructive brilliance. F. Scott Fitzgerald came first, but Ernest Hemingway had the last word. In October 2001, the trustees of Hemingway's estate sent a fax to an unsuspecting DeWitt Sage. The filmmaker's documentary, F. Scott Fitzgerald: Winter Dreams , had just aired, and, "if there was a villain in that film, it was Ernest Hemingway," admits Sage. "We were prepared for the worst," says Sage, but it is not what they got. Instead, Hemingway's trustees offered the filmmakers unprecedented access to archival records and to family members and friends who had seldom, if ever, spoken about the writer on film. The result is Ernest Hemingway: Rivers to the Sea . The latest installment in WNET's American Masters documentary series will air September 14 on PBS. The estate's timing was perfect. "Hemingway remains tremendously interesting," says Susan Lacy, executive producer and creator of the series. "His influence does not cease." The film includes interviews with Patrick Hemingway, the author's only surviving son. "Patrick Hemingway doesn't do a lot of interviews," explains Lacy. "This original footage and the archives allowed us to do an original treatment. This isn't a traditional biography. It's very much about the inner voice. There was the public Hemingway and then there was the voice of the writer."

Ashland makes another mark on local history books
home history ASHLAND - In December, Ashland made another mark in the history books when the old Barnes Oil Company building was officially entered on the National Register of Historical Places.
The Barnes Oil Company building is located on the northwest corner of Highway 6 and Silver Street. Since the building was built in the early 1930’s, there have been only three owners - the Barnes Brothers, Merle Barger and the present owner, Farmer’s and Merchants National Bank.
Bank President Bob Fricke said that his family has had a personal interest in the building for many years. Fricke said that a family ancestor was involved with the Barnes Brothers.
Farmers and Merchants National Bank bought the building in January of 2000 and have been working through a very long process to get the building entered on the Register. The building was considered for the honor because of its association with commerce and transportation as well as the architectural value.
"With the United States Department of the Interior National Park Service and the criteria through the National Banking everything has had to be approved by Washington, D.C. down to the doorknobs," explained Fricke.

Volume 12, Number 2, 2003 Being Ernest The 18-acre farm was perfect for genteel country living. Located in rural Hunterdon County, N.J., the property featured an 1880s courtyard-style barn, partially converted to a residence, that overlooked a scenic pond and small pasture. Laura, CHEP '80, and Jefferson Barnes wanted the place as soon as they saw it. There was just one small problema 29-inch-high problem, to be exact. Ernest, a bedraggled, brown miniature donkey, lived in the lower level
of the barn, beneath the house. He shared his hay with Chester, an elderly, white draft horse. Their owner was retiring. She hadn't been able to find a new home for the animals and feared separating them because of their close bond. Although the Barneses hadn't planned on taking in a tiny, snorting donkey and his aged equine friend, evicting the animals when they had nowhere to go was unthinkable. So the couple purchased the property and promised to tend Ernest and Chester. That decisionand the interest in homeless farm animals that it sparkedwould eventually transform Laura Barnes' world. Little and loyal Miniature donkeys are generally friendly, happy-spirited creatures who love being with other animals. True to that sociable profile, Ernest enjoyed hanging out with his horse pal, Chester. Having new owners didn't change that. The peewee donkey trotted eagerly into the pasture after the larger animal and stayed close beside his friend while eating and sleeping.

In the first half of the twentieth century few clergy were in the public notice as much as the Right Reverend Dr Ernest William Barnes (1874- 1953), Bishop of Birmingham, the first bishop to be appointed by a labour government. [1] Several controversies brought his name to public attention. The first two are closely interrelated: his "gorilla sermons" and his vehement rejection of sacramentalism during the Prayer Book revision, and the third, The Rise of Christianity . All three issues led from his desire to make Christianity acceptable in an age of science; thus he was very much a product of his own age. [2] Although born in Altringham on, some would say appropriately, All Fool's Day, he was a "son" of Birmingham. His parents (John) Starkie Barnes (1893-1922) and Jane Elizabeth (nee Kerry) (d. 1938) moved there in 1876 when Starkie became the head of Elkington Street School. Barnes was educated first at Clifton Road, King's Norton, then in 1889 he moved to Tindal Street School, before starting his secondary years at Camp Hill Grammar in 1883, but from 1892 he entered King Edward VI Grammar School as a foundation scholar, [3] before winning a scholarship for mathematics in 1892 to Trinity College, Cambridge. Though his parent's were non-Conformist, while at King Edward's he was confirmed into the Anglican church and attended St. John's, Sparkhill. While at Trinity he was second wrangler in 1896, President of the Union and he excelled at mathematics. He published no less than 28 academic journal articles between 1897 and 1910. [4] His main research areas was with the theory of functions. While at Cambridge Barnes also influenced Gilbert Hardy and J. E. Littlewood, the two greatest pure mathematicians of the early twentieth century. Barnes also gave his name to a lemma: Barnes' lemma. [5] At 35 he was made a FRS.

ERNIE BARNES
BIOGRAPHY
"One day on the playing field, I looked up and the sun was breaking through the clouds, hitting the unmuddied areas on the uniforms, and I said, 'That's beautiful!' I knew then that it was all over being a player. I was more interested in art. So I traded my cleats for canvas, my bruises for brushes, and put all the violence and power I had felt on the field into my paintings."

Ernest Eugene Barnes Jr. was born July 15, 1938, in a poor section ("the bottom") of Durham, North Carolina. His father, Ernest Barnes Sr., worked as a shipping clerk at Liggett Myers Tobacco Company and his mother, Fannie Mae Geer, was employed as a domestic for Frank Fuller Jr., a wealthy Southern attorney who would guide Barnes into the world of art. On days when Fannie Mae allowed her son to accompany her to work, Fuller would talk to young Ernest "about art and life. He would call me into his study and allow me to look through his art books. I enjoyed this room of polished, mahogany walls with leather chairs, shelves of leather-bound books and the sound of classical music. He would tell me about the various schools of art, his favorite painters, the museums he visited and other things my mind couldn't quite comprehend at the age of seven," the artist recalls. So it was particularly surprising when Fuller, as a member of the local school board, voted against school desegregation. "He told my mother he didn't think 'the Whites are ready.'"

Ernest Gaines
Ernest J. Gaines was born in 1933 on the River Lake plantation in Pointe Coupée Parish, Louisiana, the setting for most of his fiction; he was the fifth generation in his family to be born there. At the age of nine he was picking cotton in the plantation fields; the black quarter's school held classes only five or six months a year. When he was fifteen, Gaines moved to California to join his parents, who had left Louisiana during World War II. There he attended San Francisco State University and later won a writing fellowship to Stanford University. Gaines published his first short story in 1956. Since then he has written eight books of fiction, including Catherine Carmier, Of Love and Dust, Bloodline, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman , A Long Day in November, In My Father's House, and A Gathering of Old Men , most of which are available in Vintage paperback editions. A Lesson Before Dying , his most recent novel, won the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award. He has also been awarded a MacArthur Foundation grant, for writings of "rare historical resonance."
